Support Monument Conservation

Visitors to Congressional in recent months may have noticed an increase in headstones lying down and seen the orange signs around the cemetery. You may have even met our conservator Devlin McDonald working out on the grounds.

After decades of deferred maintenance prior to the cemetery’s revitalization, Congressional Cemetery is continuing the long process of addressing unstable monuments across the grounds. Our current focus is repairing unstable memorials that are still standing. Each year, the cemetery invests approximately $100,000 into conservation efforts to stabilize and repair endangered headstones. As we continue to make progress, we will also be able to address many of the memorials currently laid flat for safety reasons. Families and Interment Right Owners with questions about laid-down stones can reach our team directly at staff@congressionalcemetery.org.

We invite you, our community, to help contribute to our ongoing conservation efforts. If you would like to support this meaningful work, we welcome your donations!

Thank you! We can’t do this without you!
