The story of Washington, DC is a story of women. Their important roles throughout the district’s 234-year history have not always been sufficiently recognized, due to a combination of structural prejudices and the behind-the-scenes nature of some of their actions, particularly early on. Nevertheless, they persisted and continue to persist in shaping the nation and its capital.
The roles and influence of women in American society have morphed over time. Historic Congressional Cemetery is excited to welcome two local experts in women’s history to talk about these evolving roles as the next entry in the HCC 2024 Speaker Series. Kaitlin Calogera and Rebecca Grawl, both from A Tour Of Her Own tour company, will discuss the roles and actions of women in nineteenth-century American society and how those things changed heading into the twentieth century.
The cemetery invites you to this 2024 Speaker Series event on Saturday, July 20th 11 AM-12:30 PM. Following keynote remarks, Kaitlin Calogera and Rebecca Grawl will join with HCC archivist Dayle Dooley, who will lead a thematic tour of women’s history gravesites and monuments. Come along as they walk the grounds and retell the stories of women laid to rest here, including Belva Lockwood and Anne Royall.
Tickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel, weather depending, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes, as the tours often stray from the main paths.
The event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal.
