Meet Sharon

Good things happen when community organizations and volunteers work together.

With generous support from Casey Trees, the Garden Club of America, the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Nature Sacred, and others, Historic Congressional Cemetery has deepened its commitment to environmental stewardship—pursuing arboretum accreditation and hosting eco-focused events and nature tours. Sharon Metcalf plays a key role in organizing these efforts, working alongside cemetery staff and a dedicated crew of volunteer arborists and gardeners.

After retiring from a career in media and education—most recently building strategic partnerships for American University—Sharon turned her attention to preserving the profound sense of place found within the hallowed grounds of Congressional Cemetery.

These days, you’re likely to find her planting succulents at the Circle of Life seasonal sundial or strolling with visitors along the Tree Walk Through History, sharing the origin stories of old-growth witness trees.

Join her on a colorful walk and enjoy the beauty of picturesque tree tunnels, the symmetry and meaning of the Circle’s ‘tree-henge,’ and the features of 25 selected species that make up the arboretum collection.
