Please join Historic Congressional Cemetery and the Daughters of the American Revolution to dedicate a new sign for Belva Lockwood!
Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer, activist, and women’s rights pioneer, she authored a sterling legal career, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries.
To celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women, we hope that you will join us on the morning of May 19th, her death day, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. There will be some brief remarks at the gravesite, rain or shine!
Thank you to the Daughters of the American Revolution for the new historic signage to highlight Belva Lockwood’s achievements and life.
