SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nOur Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, facilitates our death cafes and represents the cemetery for these evenings with a range of guest co-facilitators from the community. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair in advance for the dates you will be joining us. We release reservations three months before the scheduled date. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form on this page or contact Laura by email. \nQuestions? Email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nInterested? RSVP to reserve your seat HERE!

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Pride with Us at Gays & Graves: A Big Gay Festival!\nSunday\, June 14th at Historic Congressional Cemetery 11 am – 4 pm.\nGays & Graves: A Big Gay Festival returns for a 2nd time to Historic Congressional Cemetery for a Pride celebration rooted in history\, remembrance\, and community. \nAs a National Historic Landmark and the final resting place of numerous LGBTQ+ activists and pioneers\, Congressional Cemetery offers a one-of-a-kind meaningful setting to reflect on the struggles and achievements that have shaped LGBTQ+ life in Washington and across the nation. This year’s festival will include a special commemorative wreath-laying with activist Randy Wicker at the grave of Leonard Matlovich\, alongside the unveiling of new interpretive signage for the Cemetery’s LGBTQ+ section. \nWhether you’re here to shop\, learn or reflect\, Gays & Graves is a celebration you don’t want to miss. \nMark your calendars and be part of this unforgettable day of Pride where LGBTQ+ history and legacy lives. \nDogs Allowed on Leash! \nEvent Schedule \n11:00 am – Festival Opens \n11:30 am – Opening Remarks from Miriam Julianna\, the artist behind Eon’s Cranes Project \nNoon – Panel discussion with Miriam and Chuck Goldfarb of the Rainbow History Project in the HCC Chapel \n2:00 pm – Gay Corner Rededication Ceremony with Activist Randy Wicker \n3:00 pm – Drag Story Hour with Charlemagne Chateau in HCC Chapel \n4:00 pm  – Festival Closes \nAll Day Activities (11 am – 4 pm) \nMake your own buttons and tree twirlers with HCC and Merry Pin \nZine workshop led by Lillie Jay Harris \nMake your own charm bracelet with Merry Pin (fee charged) \nCommunity Wishing Tree project with Diane D’Costa \n  \nAbout Our Speaker:\nRandy Wicker will be our keynote speaker for a special ceremony to dedicate new signage at our beloved Gay Corner. \nPhoto by Stas Ginzburg \nHe has fought for civil rights and equality for all since 1958. He was one of the youngest members of the Mattachine Society of New York\, advocating to educate the public about homosexuality more than a decade before Stonewall. He was one of the first open homosexuals to speak on radio and television\, and the first organizer of a gay picket in the United States. He ran a counterculture button shop\, and later an antique lamp shop in the Village—which employed and supported countless artists\, street people\, and queer folks from 1974 to 2003. \nWicker (in front) participated in the first organized gay protest in front of the White House on May 29\, 1965. \nFrom that lamp shop\, Wicker campaigned for an investigation into the death of his late roommate Marsha P. Johnson\, who is a transgender activist icon\, Stonewall veteran\, and the house mother of Wicker’s extended gay family. He is also the world’s first activist for \nthe right to human cloning. Wicker has continued to march for Marsha\, Sylvia Rivera\, and for all transgender people whose names have gone unrecognized\, and for queer liberation worldwide! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Introductory Tour
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets Here!\nJoin us for a guided introductory tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. On this tour of approximately 90 minutes\, one of our trained docents will share with you the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \n\nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. This is a non-refundable donation.\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. Tours are rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave.\n\n\nThe cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm.\nPurchase Tickets Here!
