SUMMARY:An Evening with the Residents: A Comedy Show
DESCRIPTION:Historic Congressional Cemetery is pleased to host a unique comedy program this spring. An Evening with the Residents\, a nod to the affectionate nickname for those permanently interred at the Cemetery\, invites guests to experience an evening of humor that explores themes of remembrance\, mortality\, and the ways we talk about life and legacy\, in only the way that some of DC’s top comedians can. The program continues Congressional’s commitment to death awareness\, encouraging open\, approachable conversations about death awareness in a historic setting dedicated to memory and community.\n\nWe hope that you will join us for an Evening with the Residents on Friday\, April 3rd!\n\nFlexible Rain Plan \nThis event is designed with a flexible rain plan and will proceed rain or shine. Two ticket tiers are available:\n\n\n$20 Lawn Seating: Outdoor seating on the chapel lawn if weather permits. In the event of rain and a pivot indoors\, guests who purchase this tier will receive a refund due to limited chapel capacity.\n\n\n$25 Guaranteed Seating: Lawn seating in fair weather\, with a guaranteed spot inside the chapel if the event moves indoors.\n\n\nIf the show is outdoors\, make sure you bring your blankets and low lying chairs\, as the seating will be in a grassy area. \nPlease note: there is no rain date. In the case of inclement weather\, the performance will move into the chapel.\n\nBuy Tickets \n\nFeatured Comics: \n \n  \nSamson Shete is a stand-up comedian from Columbus\, Ohio\, now based in the DMV area. He was passed at the Columbus Funny Bone\, where he hosted and featured for touring comedians. Samson was named Columbus’s Funniest Comic and was also runner-up in the Cincinnati Funniest competition. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeer\, wine\, and soft drinks will be available for purchase.\n\nDoors & Bar Open at 7:00 PM in the HCC Chapel\, with the show scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM.\n\nThe cemetery will be closed to dogs from 6:00pm-10:30pm.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nOur Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, facilitates our death cafes and represents the cemetery for these evenings with a range of guest co-facilitators from the community. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair in advance for the dates you will be joining us. We release reservations three months before the scheduled date. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form on this page or contact Laura by email. \nQuestions? Email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nInterested? RSVP to reserve your seat HERE!

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Lincoln Assassination\, with Daiya Malone
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP HERE!\nDavid Herold\, (LOC) \nOn Friday\, April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, actor John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. President Lincoln died as a result of his wound the following morning. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued\, as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Union Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 18th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent-led tour\, this first entry in our 2026 Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Daiya Malone\, followed by a complimentary docent-led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nHCC is thrilled to welcome Daiya Malone as this event’s speaker. Malone is the Interpretive Programs Manager at Ford’s Theatre\, developing interpretive resources for students\, teachers\, and general audiences. She is passionate about creating exciting and dynamic ways to engage with history for all learners. Before joining Ford’s Education last year\, Daiya worked as a museum operations manager and an exhibitions manager. She has an M.A. in Art History from American University and a B.A. in Humanities from The King’s College. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal. \n\nTo learn more about our partner\, Ford’s Theatre\, please click HERE.\nWant to rock Cemetery Speaker series merchandise\, including shirts\, hoodies\, and more?\nClick HERE to go to our online store page!\nSIGN UP HERE!
