SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club May
DESCRIPTION:From GoodReads.com: \n\n\nHusband\, father\, drag queen\, sex worker\, wife. Sarah Krasnostein’s The Trauma Cleaner is a love letter to an extraordinary ordinary life. In Sandra Pankhurst she discovered a woman capable of taking a lifetime of hostility and transphobic abuse and using it to care for some of society’s most in-need people. \nSandra Pankhurst founded her trauma cleaning business to help people whose emotional scars are written on their houses. From the forgotten flat of a drug addict to the infested home of a hoarder\, Sandra enters properties and lives at the same time. But few of the people she looks after know anything of the complexity of Sandra’s own life. Raised in an uncaring home\, Sandra’s miraculous gift for warmth and humour in the face of unspeakable personal tragedy mark her out as a one-off. \n\nStill interested? Sign up here! \n

SUMMARY:Mostly Mothers: The Eternal Maternal at Congressional Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Originally created for Mother’s Day visitors\, this tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives and sometimes their deaths.  Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease be aware that the cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays\, so please only visit if you’re comfortable with off-leash pups. \n$5 per person. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged. \nMeet the docent inside the front gate and the tour is rain or shine.
