SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club March (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Marilyn Johnson was enthralled by the remarkable lives that were marching out of this world—so she sought out the best obits in the English language and the people who spent their lives writing about the dead. She surveyed the darkest corners of Internet chat rooms\, and made a pilgrimage to London to savor the most caustic and literate obits of all. Now she leads us on a compelling journey into the cult and culture behind the obituary page and the unusual lives we don’t quite appreciate until they’re gone. \n\nInterested in learning more? SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes death is personal. This week\, death is personal indeed. \nThis week’s special guest\, Robert “Hoff” Hoffman\, will not be with us\, except in spirit. Hoff\, a well-known and beloved friend to the Congressional Cemetery community and beyond\, has died. This week’s activity was something Hoff and I had been planning for months as his big return to Congressional after an extended trip\, and his first time at Death Doula Days\, which he has been an integral part of as an advisor\, cheerleader\, and this week our long-planned special guest. \nI am\, like many people I know\, gutted at the unexpected loss of this extraordinary person. In the time since I learned of his death I have marveled at the impact he had on me\, and the lessons I believe he would want me and others to take from his passing. I have never known anyone as interested in death nor someone so enthusiastic in embracing death awareness. It was this shared interest that made us fast friends. He always made me laugh so hard and his support and kindness had the quality of making me feel seen and valued. In this I was not alone: others have shared the same experience. We don’t get a lot of good friends in life\, but especially not ones who make such a mark in so little time. \nSo\, Hoff was to be our guest around the table this week and we were going to listen to his musical playlist for his deathbed: his ‘transition playlist.’ He had very specific choices and each song had a meaning and a place in his memories. We worked together to set them up in my Apple Music playlists by topic. They run almost exactly three hours\, which is also the length of Death Doula Days every Saturday. Clever\, Hoff. Well played. \nHoff believed in an existence after death. He left very generous descriptions on how to reach him after his death\, and messages he wanted to be read\, and audio messages\, too. Do yourself a favor and read it and listen. I believe that would make him happy: https://www.hoffharmonica.com/end-of-life \nHe also left his playlist\, and so we are still going to keep this Saturday as his day. He planned to explain every song\, but we’re going to just experience together as we listen. And\, in his honor and with him looking over our shoulders\, we can all work on our own playlists together. \nIf you knew Hoff\, please join us. If you didn’t know him\, it’s not too late: come get to know him through his playlist. He would LOVE that\, I truly believe. There may be tears\, of course\, but I don’t think he’d mind. He wanted everyone to think deeply with courage and a sense of humor about mortality and he demonstrated it. We will follow his example. \nBring your musical playlists\, and join us for a musical visit with Hoff. Sweet treats and tea provided. RSVP appreciated. Donations to our amazing Congressional Cemetery deeply appreciated. \nHug your people\, \nLaura \nRSVP BY CLICKING HERE \n\nFor more dates and activities check the HCC website and we invite you to sign up for our mailing list: Death Doula Days at HCC

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this week’s Death Doula Day at Congressional Cemetery! Drop in hours are 10am-1pm on Saturdays\, with special drop in guests for special topics on some weeks from 11am-noon. \nOUR ACTIVITY THIS WEEK from 11 to noon: Q & A with our special guest\, Reverend Carla Thompson\, Hospice Chaplain at Capital Caring at Sibley Hospital. Many of will find ourselves or loved ones offered the support of a chaplain while in hospice or the hospital. There are many misconceptions about what their role is\, and how a chaplain of one faith tradition can serve those of many traditions. Have you ever wondered what hospice chaplains do\, and what it is like for them serving dying people and their families? An ordained Episcopal priest for 24 years\, Thompson also served the US Department of State for ten years and worked as a police officer in Urbana Champaign for 11 years. Come ask questions of this fascinating chaplain about her “many gates to Jerusalem” approach to connecting with and supporting patients and their families at end of life. \nBy way of background\, our Death Doula Days host\, Laura\, volunteers at Capital Caring Hospice at Sibley Hospital where Reverend Thompson works. \n\nRSVP is appreciated but not required to attend. Click here to let us know you can be with us\, and so we can let you know of any schedule changes.\n\nCake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club January (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Melville’s Over My Dead Body is a lively (pun intended) and wide-ranging history of cemeteries\, places that have mirrored the passing eras in history but have also shaped it. Cemeteries have given birth to landscape architecture and famous parks\, as well as influenced architectural styles. They’ve inspired and motivated some of our greatest poets and authors—Emerson\, Whitman\, Dickinson. They’ve been used as political tools to shift the country’s discourse and as important symbols of the United States’ ambition and reach. \nBut they are changing and fading. Embalming and burial is incredibly toxic\, and while cremations have just recently surpassed burials in popularity\, they’re not great for the environment either. Over My Dead Body explores everything—history\, sustainability\, land use\, and more—and what it really means to memorialize.. [more…] \n\nInterested in learning more? Read our Blog Post about Tombs and Tomes\, or request to join our Goodreads group. \nStill interested? Sign up here! \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nThis week:\nWe are so pleased you can join us for this\, OUR FIRST\, Death Doula Day at Congressional Cemetery! \nOur special invited guests will be the Threshold Singers of Washington DC to demonstrate how they sing at bedsides of local hospice patients. Their mission is to “offer our voices at tender times.” Demonstration 11am-noon. Come early to meet Laura. Stay afterward for tea and cake and conversation. \nSchedule: \n10am-11am  Come mingle with others and meet the HCC Death Doula in residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh \n11am-12pm  Experience the extraordinary Threshold Singers of Washington DC as they demonstrate the experience of singing to dying people. Volunteers will  in the center of the circle\, followed by an opportunity to ask questions about the experience of being with dying people\, about the music\, and about their mission. \n12pm-1pm    Enjoy tea and cake and meet others interested in comforting and supporting the dying\, as well as share your ideas and suggestions on death positive programming during Laura’s residency from noon to 1pm \nRSVP Here \nFor more dates and activities check the HCC website and we invite you to sign up for our mailing list: Death Doula Days at HCC
