SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gentleman's Gambit: A Prohibition Era Mystery
DESCRIPTION:On January 17\, 1920\, the United States went dry. The 18th Amendment ushered in a new era in American history\, one characterized by booming business\, new fashions\, and immense cultural upheaval. And in our nation’s capital\, politicians\, bootleggers\, activists\, government officials\, cooks\, servants\, and everyone else in between all lived side by side\, helping texture the stories from the past we tell today. \nOne of these individuals was James “Jimmy” LaFontaine. Known as the “Gentleman Gambler\,” he owned and operated one of the largest and most profitable casinos of the era\, the Maryland Athletic Club. And at Congressional Cemetery\, Jimmy\, along with a selection of other interred residents\, are returning for a special event. Where is Jimmy? Who else is returning with him? What is the password to access his Maryland Athletic Club? Is Jimmy one of the notorious bootleggers supplying illicit spirits to the halls of Congress and beyond? These questions and more will all be answered at Gentleman’s Gambit: A Prohibition Era Mystery. \nGentleman’s Gambit is an interactive immersive outdoor theater experience in which visitors will be tasked with finding 6 actors playing interred residents across the cemetery grounds. Once they find them all\, they will be granted an audience with Jimmy LaFontaine himself to once and for all solve the Gentleman’s Gambit. \nThe event also features cocktails at our Speakeasy Bar\, live period appropriate music playing throughout the evening\, and more thematic fun. The event is rain or shine. Timed entry tickets are from 4:00 PM-7:45 PM in 15 minute increments. Last call at the bar is at 9:00 PM and all visitors will be asked to leave at 9:15 PM. \nTo purchase tickets\, please click the link HERE!\n \nInstructions:\nHeld on the evenings of May 19 and 20\, visitors will meet their instructor near the Gatehouse of the cemetery at preset start times (see ticket times on checkout) and will be presented with instructions and a Bootlegger’s Adviser mystery document\, containing a map\, helpful hints\, and spaces to write answers. Participants will use the Bootlegger’s Adviser\, hints from various costumed actors\, and of course their own instincts to find actors throughout the cemetery. \nAfter finding an actor in the cemetery and hearing their story\, participants are provided with a letter of a password to access the Maryland Athletic Club. Once they have all the letters and know the full password\, participants may proceed to the final stop to meet Jimmy himself at the Maryland Athletic Club. A complimentary prize is included! \n \nTo ensure every participant is able to enjoy the event\, we ask that you please try to complete the challenge in no more than 1 hour and 15 minutes. You are welcome to enjoy cocktails and music at our Speakeasy Bar after you solve the Gentleman’s Gambit.  \nYou are welcome to arrive before your scheduled start time (we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early) so you can go through check in/ID check\, purchase a beverage\, or enjoy live music\, etc. But you must meet the instructor near the front gate at your scheduled start time to receive your Bootlegger’s Adviser and instructions to start your challenge.  \nComfortable and reliable footwear is recommended as the self-guided experience may take you across uneven ground.  \nASL Interpreters may be available upon request. If you need an ASL Interpreter to participate in the event\, please message Aorlikoff@congressionalcemetery.org to arrange for one.  \nWant to rock Gentleman’s Gambit merchandise\, including shirts\, hoodies\, etc? SUMMARY:America 250! Plaque Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Please join Congressional Cemetery and the District of Columbia Daughters of the American Revolution for a dedication ceremony celebrating the installation of a new historic “America 250!” marker at the graveside of Elbridge Gerry\, the only signer of the Declaration of Independence interred in Washington DC. \nThe event is free and open to the public but we ask that you please RSVP HERE. Remarks will be provided by DAR President General Pamela Wright and Congressional Cemetery’s Director of Public Engagement A.J. Orlikoff. \nThe American 250! markers celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The marker\, a 30″ x 30″ bronze plaque\, commemorates the contributions of the men and women who achieved American independence. Generously donated by the DCDAR\, the plaque is a tangible reminder of Congressional Cemetery’s and Washington DC’s patriotic history. \n  \n \nElbridge Gerry\, from Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, was one of America’s Founding Fathers. He signed the Declaration of Independence\, attended the Constitutional Convention\, and was elected Vice President in the 1812 Presidential Election. During the Revolutionary War\, he helped supply the Continental Army using his international business contacts while serving on the Continental Congress. His patriotic service to the American cause during Revolutionary War greatly contributed to American independence. We hope you will join us to celebrate his patriotic legacy.  \nHarvard Art Museum \nTo learn more about the mission of the DCDAR\, please visit their website HERE. \n

Office hours from 10am-1pm. \nTOPIC FOR THIS WEEK: SO YOU WANT TO MEET\, OR BECOME\, A DEATH DOULA?\nDeath Doula Days has garnered a lot of interest from the public and media. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes death is personal. This week\, death is personal indeed. \nThis week’s special guest\, Robert “Hoff” Hoffman\, will not be with us\, except in spirit. Hoff\, a well-known and beloved friend to the Congressional Cemetery community and beyond\, has died. This week’s activity was something Hoff and I had been planning for months as his big return to Congressional after an extended trip\, and his first time at Death Doula Days\, which he has been an integral part of as an advisor\, cheerleader\, and this week our long-planned special guest. \nI am\, like many people I know\, gutted at the unexpected loss of this extraordinary person. In the time since I learned of his death I have marveled at the impact he had on me\, and the lessons I believe he would want me and others to take from his passing. I have never known anyone as interested in death nor someone so enthusiastic in embracing death awareness. It was this shared interest that made us fast friends. He always made me laugh so hard and his support and kindness had the quality of making me feel seen and valued. In this I was not alone: others have shared the same experience. We don’t get a lot of good friends in life\, but especially not ones who make such a mark in so little time. \nSo\, Hoff was to be our guest around the table this week and we were going to listen to his musical playlist for his deathbed: his ‘transition playlist.’ He had very specific choices and each song had a meaning and a place in his memories. We worked together to set them up in my Apple Music playlists by topic. They run almost exactly three hours\, which is also the length of Death Doula Days every Saturday. Clever\, Hoff. Well played. \nHoff believed in an existence after death. He left very generous descriptions on how to reach him after his death\, and messages he wanted to be read\, and audio messages\, too. Do yourself a favor and read it and listen. I believe that would make him happy: https://www.hoffharmonica.com/end-of-life \nHe also left his playlist\, and so we are still going to keep this Saturday as his day. He planned to explain every song\, but we’re going to just experience together as we listen. And\, in his honor and with him looking over our shoulders\, we can all work on our own playlists together. \nIf you knew Hoff\, please join us. If you didn’t know him\, it’s not too late: come get to know him through his playlist. He would LOVE that\, I truly believe. There may be tears\, of course\, but I don’t think he’d mind. He wanted everyone to think deeply with courage and a sense of humor about mortality and he demonstrated it. We will follow his example. \nBring your musical playlists\, and join us for a musical visit with Hoff. Sweet treats and tea provided. RSVP appreciated. Donations to our amazing Congressional Cemetery deeply appreciated. \nHug your people\, \nLaura \nRSVP BY CLICKING HERE \n\nFor more dates and activities check the HCC website and we invite you to sign up for our mailing list: Death Doula Days at HCC

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this week’s Death Doula Day at Congressional Cemetery! Drop in hours are 10am-1pm on Saturdays\, with special drop in guests for special topics on some weeks from 11am-noon. \nOUR ACTIVITY THIS WEEK from 11 to noon: Q & A with our special guest\, Reverend Carla Thompson\, Hospice Chaplain at Capital Caring at Sibley Hospital. Many of will find ourselves or loved ones offered the support of a chaplain while in hospice or the hospital. There are many misconceptions about what their role is\, and how a chaplain of one faith tradition can serve those of many traditions. Have you ever wondered what hospice chaplains do\, and what it is like for them serving dying people and their families? An ordained Episcopal priest for 24 years\, Thompson also served the US Department of State for ten years and worked as a police officer in Urbana Champaign for 11 years. Come ask questions of this fascinating chaplain about her “many gates to Jerusalem” approach to connecting with and supporting patients and their families at end of life. \nBy way of background\, our Death Doula Days host\, Laura\, volunteers at Capital Caring Hospice at Sibley Hospital where Reverend Thompson works. \n\nRSVP is appreciated but not required to attend. Click here to let us know you can be with us\, and so we can let you know of any schedule changes.\n\nCake and tea provided. SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club January (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Melville’s Over My Dead Body is a lively (pun intended) and wide-ranging history of cemeteries\, places that have mirrored the passing eras in history but have also shaped it. Cemeteries have given birth to landscape architecture and famous parks\, as well as influenced architectural styles. They’ve inspired and motivated some of our greatest poets and authors—Emerson\, Whitman\, Dickinson. They’ve been used as political tools to shift the country’s discourse and as important symbols of the United States’ ambition and reach. \nBut they are changing and fading. Embalming and burial is incredibly toxic\, and while cremations have just recently surpassed burials in popularity\, they’re not great for the environment either. Over My Dead Body explores everything—history\, sustainability\, land use\, and more—and what it really means to memorialize..
