DESCRIPTION:The United States was consumed by the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Millions of individuals were swept up in the chaos of the conflict as the war raged for over four years. Come and explore the graves and memorials which showcase incredible individual stories from the Civil War in a docent led tour. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. With the talented Henry Selick in the director’s chair and frequent Burton collaborator Danny Elfman behind the film’s award-winning original music\, Burton’s stop-motion masterpiece broke new ground\, bringing dark German Expressionism inspired holiday vistas to life in a way few filmmakers ever had. Join us for evening of frightful and delightful cinematic magic among the stones. This is Halloween and This is Cinematery. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. The 18th Amendment ushered in a new era in American history\, one characterized by booming business\, new fashions\, and immense cultural upheaval. And in our nation’s capital\, politicians\, bootleggers\, activists\, government officials\, cooks\, servants\, and everyone else in between all lived side by side\, helping texture the stories from the past we tell today. \nOne of these individuals was James “Jimmy” LaFontaine. Known as the “Gentleman Gambler\,” he owned and operated one of the largest and most profitable casinos of the era\, the Maryland Athletic Club. And at Congressional Cemetery\, Jimmy\, along with a selection of other interred residents\, are returning for a special event. Where is Jimmy? Who else is returning with him? What is the password to access his Maryland Athletic Club? Is Jimmy one of the notorious bootleggers supplying illicit spirits to the halls of Congress and beyond? These questions and more will all be answered at Gentleman’s Gambit: A Prohibition Era Mystery. \nGentleman’s Gambit is an interactive immersive outdoor theater experience in which visitors will be tasked with finding 6 actors playing interred residents across the cemetery grounds. Once they find them all\, they will be granted an audience with Jimmy LaFontaine himself to once and for all solve the Gentleman’s Gambit. \nThe event also features cocktails at our Speakeasy Bar\, live period appropriate music playing throughout the evening\, and more thematic fun. The event is rain or shine. Timed entry tickets are from 4:00 PM-7:45 PM in 15 minute increments. Remarks will be provided by DAR President General Pamela Wright and Congressional Cemetery’s Director of Public Engagement A.J. Orlikoff. \nThe American 250! markers celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The marker\, a 30″ x 30″ bronze plaque\, commemorates the contributions of the men and women who achieved American independence. Generously donated by the DCDAR\, the plaque is a tangible reminder of Congressional Cemetery’s and Washington DC’s patriotic history. \n  \n \nElbridge Gerry\, from Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, was one of America’s Founding Fathers. He signed the Declaration of Independence\, attended the Constitutional Convention\, and was elected Vice President in the 1812 Presidential Election. During the Revolutionary War\, he helped supply the Continental Army using his international business contacts while serving on the Continental Congress. His patriotic service to the American cause during Revolutionary War greatly contributed to American independence. DESCRIPTION:Sometimes death is personal. This week\, death is personal indeed. \nThis week’s special guest\, Robert “Hoff” Hoffman\, will not be with us\, except in spirit. Hoff\, a well-known and beloved friend to the Congressional Cemetery community and beyond\, has died. This week’s activity was something Hoff and I had been planning for months as his big return to Congressional after an extended trip\, and his first time at Death Doula Days\, which he has been an integral part of as an advisor\, cheerleader\, and this week our long-planned special guest. \nI am\, like many people I know\, gutted at the unexpected loss of this extraordinary person. In the time since I learned of his death I have marveled at the impact he had on me\, and the lessons I believe he would want me and others to take from his passing. I have never known anyone as interested in death nor someone so enthusiastic in embracing death awareness. It was this shared interest that made us fast friends. He always made me laugh so hard and his support and kindness had the quality of making me feel seen and valued. In this I was not alone: others have shared the same experience. We don’t get a lot of good friends in life\, but especially not ones who make such a mark in so little time. \nSo\, Hoff was to be our guest around the table this week and we were going to listen to his musical playlist for his deathbed: his ‘transition playlist.’ He had very specific choices and each song had a meaning and a place in his memories. We worked together to set them up in my Apple Music playlists by topic. They run almost exactly three hours\, which is also the length of Death Doula Days every Saturday. Clever\, Hoff. Well played. \nHoff believed in an existence after death. He left very generous descriptions on how to reach him after his death\, and messages he wanted to be read\, and audio messages\, too. Do yourself a favor and read it and listen. He planned to explain every song\, but we’re going to just experience together as we listen. And\, in his honor and with him looking over our shoulders\, we can all work on our own playlists together. \nIf you knew Hoff\, please join us. If you didn’t know him\, it’s not too late: come get to know him through his playlist. He would LOVE that\, I truly believe. There may be tears\, of course\, but I don’t think he’d mind. He wanted everyone to think deeply with courage and a sense of humor about mortality and he demonstrated it.
