SUMMARY:September Cinematery: Dark Shadows
DESCRIPTION:Vampires who awake after centuries of slumber. Cemeteries at night. Tim Burton dark comedies. The three were made for each other. We hope that you will accept our invitation and come enjoy a humble showing of all three for a screening of Dark Shadows. Originally a 1960s vampire soap opera of the same name\,  Johnny Depp jumped at the chance to star in the lead role in the remake of one of his childhood favorites. With the persuasive powers of a vampire himself\, Depp even convinced his longtime friend and collaborator Tim Burton to direct this quirky fish out of water re-imagining of the 60s classic. We hope that you will join us for the conclusion of the Summer of Surreal and please\, bring plenty of steak to ward off any vampires who might be among the attendees. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. The recommended donation is $10 per person\, although you are welcome to give more. \nYou can purchase your tickets HERE! \n \nWe would like to thank our community partner and neighbor Fulcrum Properties Group for sponsoring the Cinematery screen and complimentary popcorn.

SUMMARY:The War of 1812: Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:The various internments at Congressional Cemetery are a time capsule of American history. And this is especially true for the War of 1812. Sometimes called the “2nd War for Independence” the conflict saw the fledgling Americans squaring off with the British once again. Across the continent and on the high seas\, Americans fought under the Stars and Stripes for their country. Due to Congressional Cemetery’s status as one of the first burial grounds of national resonance\, many War of 1812 connected individuals decided on Congressional as their final resting place\, including two Commanding Generals of the Army\, a Choctaw War Chief\, and the man who saved the original copy of the Constitution from destruction. \nCome and discover the War of 1812 in an incredibly unique way\, through the gravestones and memorials left behind by those who were there. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe tour is rain or shine. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person \nYou may purchase tickets here!

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Companion animal doulas \nOur special drop in guest will be Alexis Mitchell\, a student getting her training as a companion animal end of life doula. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nMost people have never heard of a “death doula” or an “end-of-life doula” so even fewer have heard of a companion animal eol-death doula\, so I was fascinated to hear from Alexis about her studies at the The University of Vermont. I have questions! And\, I’m sure\, so do you. What drew her to this? How might it differ from supporting dying humans and their families? What are her hopes for this work? \nThis is a topic of special interest for us here. This is Congressional Cemetery\, where dogs in particular are such an important part of the community and we have a special space for memorializing companion animals. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Fear of death (or is it fear of dying?) \nIt is very common in modern times to avoid talking or thinking about death\, even while we are all likely to live longer than our ancestors. Death is a topic that is avoided with dread\, fear\, even anger. Death positivity is the idea that death is a normal and expected part of living\, and that talking about dying and death openly makes it easier to live authentically and fully. \nThere are costs to avoiding the topic. A lack of preparation can make the end of life unnecessarily chaotic and challenging. Relationships are strained when issues are not resolved or acknowledged. Health issues may not be addressed for fear of “the worst.” \nFear of death also causes those who are elderly\, ill\, or dying to be avoided as well. \nIt takes courage and curiosity to talk openly about death\, but it may be easier with practice. Accepting our mortality can lead to less avoidance and even more freedom to live fully in the time we have. \nThis Death Doula Day we’ll talk about the topic of death phobia\, death anxiety\, fear of death. Some of us have very little of this\, and some of us are impaired by it all the time. We won’t be able to fix the problem for one another but we can bring our fear into the open. \nBring your ideas and tools and strategies to share. There is so much wisdom in the world around this natural fear: let’s explore some of that together! \n\nThis topic will be about fear around our own deaths\, rather than grief or fear of the deaths of others. Sometimes these intertwine\, but mostly we’ll focus on our individual fears around our own mortality.\nThis conversation is informal and not professional psychotherapy. These topics and anxiety around death are marvelous subjects to explore professionally with trained psychotherapists. Getting professional support is life-affirming in the very best sense of the word.\n If this topic brings up strong feelings it may not be a good one to explore in this session at this time. \n\nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: The junk drawers \nThought experiment: you disappear suddenly and your roomies\, family\, and a cleaning service arrive at your residence. What do they find? How do they make sense of that bottlecap from a certain Saturday at the beach\, the little box containing your grandmother’s teeth\, the Italian Lira bill. Are they valuable? Will they go in the trash? \nWho are you\, according to your junk drawer? What story of your life does your stuff tell the world when you’re gone? \nThis weekend we are facing the difficult topic of death and our stuff. Bring a picture of your junk drawer\, if you dare. Make a list of the miscellany in the flour canister on your shelf. How much is labeled? How many things mean so much to you but won’t even be identifiable to others? Who would you want to have the flotsam and jetsam of your shelves and drawers? \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. SUMMARY:August Cinematery: Batman
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Knight. Gotham’s Protector. The Caped Crusader. Bruce Wayne’s Night Job. Indeed\, few heroes have the name recognition of Batman\, one of the most beloved and iconic superheroes of all time. And while Batman has a storied and celebrated history\, it was Tim Burton who first introduced most audiences to his exploits with his 1989 smash hit blockbuster. Starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader and Jake Nicholson stealing the show as the Clown Prince of Crime\, the Joker\, Burton’s Batman introduced audiences to a dark and surrealist vision of Gotham and helped popularize superheroes for a new generation. We hope that you will join us and remember to put a SMILE on your face. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Ready\, set\, don’t go! \nWe are having an advance planning checklist challenge. No homework necessary: come and fill out a checklist of possible items to take care of to be prepared. Some you have probably already done. Some you are still planning to do. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday we will be watching and then discussing a short film called “Honoring Choices.” The film was produced by Grief Dialogues and is made available to us by the playwright and producer\, Elizabeth Coplan with generous underwriting by Compassion & Choices. \nA special shout out to one of my favorite podcasts\, End of Life University\, for their episode about Honoring Choices where I first learned about the project last year. The episode is available here. \nThe film centers on a family facing a father’s end of life and the challenge of learning to talk about it and make plans around it. The title says it all: “honoring choices.” It is about making and honoring choices in a caring and respectful way. \nAfter viewing the film we will have a conversation around the Death Doula Day table about how difficult these conversations are in families\, but also ways to grow more courageous and compassionate as we do so. SUMMARY:Founding the Federal City: Capital Connections Tour
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1800\, Washington DC was the fledgling capital of a fledgling nation. Built to house the seats of federal government\, the nation’s capital soon became a city in its own right\, a place where people lived\, worked\, and\, of course\, died. A mix of congressmen\, merchants\, military officers\, diplomats\, architects\, and enslaved individuals comprised the fabric of the new capital\, an experimental mix of people in an experimental new nation. \nWe invite you to experience the lives of the people in the early days of the Federal City in a new special tour of the cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays\, 11:00-3:00. \nThe tour is rain or shine. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person \nYou may purchase tickets here!

Start\, or work on\, your personal relationship with those who make you who you are. \nOur Death Doula Day baker\, Mark\, is making apple hand pies\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \n******************* \nDeath Doula Days: each Saturday 10am to noon. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Activity on June 24: we are playing the Death Deck card game. Bring your courage\, curiosity\, and sense of humor to answer questions about death and dying in small groups using the Death Deck game. Free event: sweet treats and tea provided. Donations welcome! \nNo one likes to talk about dying\, right? \nTo see upcoming topics and guests join our Death Doula Days mailing list by clicking HERE. \n
