SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: September 30\, 2023 Corpse Pose (special guest\, Laura Gabisch) \nOur special drop in guest will be Laura Gabisch\, who teaches yoga classes at Congressional Cemetery. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nGabisch\, who has been a frequent visitor to the Death Doula Days hours on Saturdays this year\, intrigued us all with a mention of Shavasana\, or Corpse Pose\, as she was heading over to lead a yoga class. \nWe have to know more! So we’ve asked Laura G. to join us to talk about yoga and breathing and the role and meaning of the corpse pose. Laura will lead us in a bit of “chair yoga” as well. \nLaura “Narayani” Gubisch is a long time hatha yoga teacher focused on the practice of relaxation\, or corpse pose\, and absolutely loves teaching this pose (and many others) under the beautiful trees at the cemetery! \nAnd to think that Laura the Death Doula just thought of that part of yoga class as “the nap.” \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bad Art Day! (special facilitator\, Liana Mensh) \nThis week we have a special facilitator and our death doula will be assisting. Liana Mensh*\, an art director here in DC\, is taking the lead on a special experience. During our “Bucket List” session a few months ago it came up that so many of us have a lot of “aspirational” art and craft supplies. We buy them with good intentions but don’t use them\, and they haunt us and taunt us. \nSo\, we’re inviting you to grab those unused marker sets\, glitter pens\, glue guns and watercolors and bring them down. Not to make great art\, though. We’re going to make some bad art and have good fun doing it. We’re going to let go of the projects that are taking up space in our closets and causing us regret. We’ll make stuff for a few hours and then swap items freely: bring some\, take some others home\, and with our newfound creativity and freedom not to do things expertly we will give these items new life. \nBeing death positive is about living fully. Let’s not let our artsy crafty impulses cramp our style! \nPLEASE BRING your unused ART SUPPLIES\, CRAFT SUPPLIES\, interesting objects\, sparkly things\, gewgaws and gimcracks. Feel free to leave them behind after we play\, and adopt other people’s aspirational artsy crafty things. We will donate any extra supplies to UpCycle Creative Reuse Center in Alexandria. \nWear playclothes. \nArrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \n*Yes\, Liana is Laura’s favorite daughter! \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a friend! \n

SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club September (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:For the virtual meeting\, we ask that you include a sense of macabre fun! This very special meeting will commemorate Tombs and Tomes’ 10th birthday. \nBeloved\, best-selling science writer Mary Roach’s “acutely entertaining\, morbidly fascinating” (Susan Adams\, Forbes) classic\, now with a new epilogue. \nFor two thousand years\, cadavers—some willingly\, some unwittingly—have been involved in science’s boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They’ve tested France’s first guillotines\, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle\, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin\, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure\, from heart transplants to gender confirmation surgery\, cadavers have helped make history in their quiet way. “Delightful—though never disrespectful” (Les Simpson\, Time Out New York)\, Stiff investigates the strange lives of our bodies postmortem and answers the question: What should we do after we die? \nStill interested? Sign up here! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Among the Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Experience Congressional Cemetery through Mindfulness\nImmerse yourself in the natural and cultural features of Congressional Cemetery through an outdoor mindfulness tour. Outdoor mindfulness is akin to Shinrin-yoku\, or forest bathing\, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind\, promotes well-being\, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The session begins with warm-ups\, centering\, and breathing exercises. These are followed by a non-strenuous walk\, and an extended sit. We will slow down\, be curious\, and take time to connect with the natural and historic place that is Congressional Cemetery. Mindfulness Among the Monuments is lead by Susan West Montgomery. Susan is a certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide providing outdoor mindfulness excursions in the Washington DC region and beyond. She specializes in developing customized excursions at historic and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. Tickets are $25 and limited to 20 participants. \nClick here to purchase tickets!

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Sept. 9\, we are very pleased to present the award-winning feature documentary JACK HAS A PLAN. We saw the amazing and funny film at this year’s DC Independent Film Festival\, where it won the “Best of the Fest” award. The filmmaker\, Bradley Berman\, generously gave us permission for a single screening at Congressional. \nWhen Jack Tuller\, a man with a terminal brain tumor for 25 years\, decides to end his life\, his family and friends struggle to accept his decision. Berman\, Jack’s best friend\, documents his three-year quest to die a happy man\, culminating in a permanent going-away party. The San Francisco Examiner said: “It’s as joyous\, thrilling and funny as any film about death could be.”\n\n\nThe film is\, first and foremost\, a great story about one person’s journey. But it’s also a rich exploration of death with dignity\, end-of-life wishes\, and the idea of a good death. \nWe will begin at 10 am with showing the film which will leave us some time for processing and discussion. This film’s characters show a range of beliefs and concerns that will probably be reflected among us watching the film. We will take on the challenge of talking about issues which may be controversial or emotional with curiosity and courage\, and mutual respect.\n\nAll are welcome. We hope that you will accept our invitation and come enjoy a humble showing of all three for a screening of Dark Shadows. Originally a 1960s vampire soap opera of the same name\,  Johnny Depp jumped at the chance to star in the lead role in the remake of one of his childhood favorites. With the persuasive powers of a vampire himself\, Depp even convinced his longtime friend and collaborator Tim Burton to direct this quirky fish out of water re-imagining of the 60s classic. We hope that you will join us for the conclusion of the Summer of Surreal and please\, bring plenty of steak to ward off any vampires who might be among the attendees. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. The recommended donation is $10 per person\, although you are welcome to give more. \nYou can purchase your tickets HERE! \n \nWe would like to thank our community partner and neighbor Fulcrum Properties Group for sponsoring the Cinematery screen and complimentary popcorn.

SUMMARY:The War of 1812: Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:The various internments at Congressional Cemetery are a time capsule of American history. And this is especially true for the War of 1812. Sometimes called the “2nd War for Independence” the conflict saw the fledgling Americans squaring off with the British once again. Across the continent and on the high seas\, Americans fought under the Stars and Stripes for their country. Due to Congressional Cemetery’s status as one of the first burial grounds of national resonance\, many War of 1812 connected individuals decided on Congressional as their final resting place\, including two Commanding Generals of the Army\, a Choctaw War Chief\, and the man who saved the original copy of the Constitution from destruction. \nCome and discover the War of 1812 in an incredibly unique way\, through the gravestones and memorials left behind by those who were there. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe tour is rain or shine. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person \nYou may purchase tickets here!

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Companion animal doulas \nOur special drop in guest will be Alexis Mitchell\, a student getting her training as a companion animal end of life doula. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nMost people have never heard of a “death doula” or an “end-of-life doula” so even fewer have heard of a companion animal eol-death doula\, so I was fascinated to hear from Alexis about her studies at the The University of Vermont. I have questions! And\, I’m sure\, so do you. What drew her to this? How might it differ from supporting dying humans and their families? What are her hopes for this work? \nThis is a topic of special interest for us here. This is Congressional Cemetery\, where dogs in particular are such an important part of the community and we have a special space for memorializing companion animals. \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Fear of death (or is it fear of dying?) \nIt is very common in modern times to avoid talking or thinking about death\, even while we are all likely to live longer than our ancestors. Death is a topic that is avoided with dread\, fear\, even anger. Death positivity is the idea that death is a normal and expected part of living\, and that talking about dying and death openly makes it easier to live authentically and fully. \nThere are costs to avoiding the topic. A lack of preparation can make the end of life unnecessarily chaotic and challenging. Relationships are strained when issues are not resolved or acknowledged. Health issues may not be addressed for fear of “the worst.” \nFear of death also causes those who are elderly\, ill\, or dying to be avoided as well. \nIt takes courage and curiosity to talk openly about death\, but it may be easier with practice. Accepting our mortality can lead to less avoidance and even more freedom to live fully in the time we have. \nThis Death Doula Day we’ll talk about the topic of death phobia\, death anxiety\, fear of death. Some of us have very little of this\, and some of us are impaired by it all the time. We won’t be able to fix the problem for one another but we can bring our fear into the open. \nBring your ideas and tools and strategies to share. There is so much wisdom in the world around this natural fear: let’s explore some of that together! \n\nThis topic will be about fear around our own deaths\, rather than grief or fear of the deaths of others. Sometimes these intertwine\, but mostly we’ll focus on our individual fears around our own mortality.\nThis conversation is informal and not professional psychotherapy. These topics and anxiety around death are marvelous subjects to explore professionally with trained psychotherapists. Getting professional support is life-affirming in the very best sense of the word.\n If this topic brings up strong feelings it may not be a good one to explore in this session at this time. \n\nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: The junk drawers \nThought experiment: you disappear suddenly and your roomies\, family\, and a cleaning service arrive at your residence. What do they find? How do they make sense of that bottlecap from a certain Saturday at the beach\, the little box containing your grandmother’s teeth\, the Italian Lira bill. Are they valuable? Will they go in the trash? \nWho are you\, according to your junk drawer? What story of your life does your stuff tell the world when you’re gone? \nThis weekend we are facing the difficult topic of death and our stuff. Bring a picture of your junk drawer\, if you dare. Make a list of the miscellany in the flour canister on your shelf. How much is labeled? How many things mean so much to you but won’t even be identifiable to others? Who would you want to have the flotsam and jetsam of your shelves and drawers? \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:August Cinematery: Batman
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Knight. Gotham’s Protector. The Caped Crusader. Bruce Wayne’s Night Job. Indeed\, few heroes have the name recognition of Batman\, one of the most beloved and iconic superheroes of all time. And while Batman has a storied and celebrated history\, it was Tim Burton who first introduced most audiences to his exploits with his 1989 smash hit blockbuster. Starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader and Jake Nicholson stealing the show as the Clown Prince of Crime\, the Joker\, Burton’s Batman introduced audiences to a dark and surrealist vision of Gotham and helped popularize superheroes for a new generation. We hope that you will join us and remember to put a SMILE on your face. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Ready\, set\, don’t go! \nWe are having an advance planning checklist challenge. Come join us if you haven’t started anything\, or you want to be a role model as someone who checks every box. No shame\, just encouragement. \nSpoiler alert: death doulas don’t have our whole list complete! \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday we will be watching and then discussing a short film called “Honoring Choices.” The film was produced by Grief Dialogues and is made available to us by the playwright and producer\, Elizabeth Coplan with generous underwriting by Compassion & Choices. \nA special shout out to one of my favorite podcasts\, End of Life University\, for their episode about Honoring Choices where I first learned about the project last year. The episode is available here. \nThe film centers on a family facing a father’s end of life and the challenge of learning to talk about it and make plans around it. The title says it all: “honoring choices.” It is about making and honoring choices in a caring and respectful way. \nAfter viewing the film we will have a conversation around the Death Doula Day table about how difficult these conversations are in families\, but also ways to grow more courageous and compassionate as we do so. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Free event\, no experience necessary. \nNo one likes to talk about dying\, right? \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE. \n
