SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Tragic Lives & Demise
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC\, like any American setting\, is no stranger to tragedy. It textured the lives of the millions of people who have called the region home. Their stories reflect our story as a nation\, helping us understand the past to inform our future. In this macabre mirror\, we can catch glimpses of tragic twists of fate endured by them. And while these tragedies influenced the course of their lives\, it didn’t define them. Rather\, it was the triumph over the tragedy\, the beauty in the sorrow\, that did. \nAcross 4 evenings this October\, discover a selection of tragic tales of Congressional Cemetery’s residents. Learn how they are alive today in our memory. Encounter them\, and their stories\, brought back to life by our talented actors. Bear witness to their legacies. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \n \nVIP Tours:\nWe offer exclusive VIP tours as a part of Soul Strolls! On Fridays\, the 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM are exclusively VIP. A VIP Tour Ticket includes: \n\nA smaller\, more private tour group of 15.\nTwo free drink tickets\nA Soul Strolls swag item\nAn exclusive visit inside the Public Vault\, including a special toast with Dolly Madison herself!\nEverything included in a standard ticket\n\nFamily Friendly Tour Times:\nWant to bring children to Soul Strolls but are looking for a more family friendly tour? SUMMARY:Belva Lockwood Signage Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of October 24\, her birthday\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. This new signage will celebrate Lockwood’s self made origins as a Western New York native.  A short cupcake reception will follow at The Lockwood. \nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP HERE.  \nSpecial thanks to Royalton-Hartland Central School Class of 1972 for their generous donation of the new signage and to the people of Middleport\, NY for honoring one of their own. \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Kindness (special guest Cianna Stewart) \nOur special drop in guest will be Cianna Stewart\, the host of the Dying Kindness podcast. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nOkay\, so this week is special. Your death doula in residence is an ardent fan of the Dying Kindness podcast\, and having Cianna visit our amazing cemetery and meeting our Death Doula Day community is a dream come true. \nWe strongly suggest that you take a bit of time to read the list of topics for Dying Kindness and listen to some episodes. Cianna is on a mission to help us be kind to those we leave behind. She knows from experience why this is so important. Let’s not leave angry mourners: it’s a bad look. \nYou can leave money and jewelry and heirlooms\, but it is probably most important to leave as little chaos and confusion as you exit the world. That’s the kindness. That’s a profound kindness. \nShe’s kind\, Cianna. Kind enough to come visit us in person and share her journey. Come ask questions and learn from this wise\, kind person. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: September 30\, 2023 Corpse Pose (special guest\, Laura Gabisch) \nOur special drop in guest will be Laura Gabisch\, who teaches yoga classes at Congressional Cemetery. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nGabisch\, who has been a frequent visitor to the Death Doula Days hours on Saturdays this year\, intrigued us all with a mention of Shavasana\, or Corpse Pose\, as she was heading over to lead a yoga class. \nWe have to know more! So we’ve asked Laura G. to join us to talk about yoga and breathing and the role and meaning of the corpse pose. Laura will lead us in a bit of “chair yoga” as well. \nLaura “Narayani” Gubisch is a long time hatha yoga teacher focused on the practice of relaxation\, or corpse pose\, and absolutely loves teaching this pose (and many others) under the beautiful trees at the cemetery! \nAnd to think that Laura the Death Doula just thought of that part of yoga class as “the nap.” \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bad Art Day! (special facilitator\, Liana Mensh) \nThis week we have a special facilitator and our death doula will be assisting. Liana Mensh*\, an art director here in DC\, is taking the lead on a special experience. During our “Bucket List” session a few months ago it came up that so many of us have a lot of “aspirational” art and craft supplies. We buy them with good intentions but don’t use them\, and they haunt us and taunt us. \nSo\, we’re inviting you to grab those unused marker sets\, glitter pens\, glue guns and watercolors and bring them down. Not to make great art\, though. We’re going to make some bad art and have good fun doing it. We’re going to let go of the projects that are taking up space in our closets and causing us regret. We’ll make stuff for a few hours and then swap items freely: bring some\, take some others home\, and with our newfound creativity and freedom not to do things expertly we will give these items new life. \nBeing death positive is about living fully. Let’s not let our artsy crafty impulses cramp our style! \nPLEASE BRING your unused ART SUPPLIES\, CRAFT SUPPLIES\, interesting objects\, sparkly things\, gewgaws and gimcracks. Feel free to leave them behind after we play\, and adopt other people’s aspirational artsy crafty things. We will donate any extra supplies to UpCycle Creative Reuse Center in Alexandria. \nWear playclothes. \nArrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \n*Yes\, Liana is Laura’s favorite daughter! SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a friend! SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club September (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:For the virtual meeting\, we ask that you include a sense of macabre fun! This very special meeting will commemorate Tombs and Tomes’ 10th birthday. \nBeloved\, best-selling science writer Mary Roach’s “acutely entertaining\, morbidly fascinating” (Susan Adams\, Forbes) classic\, now with a new epilogue. \nFor two thousand years\, cadavers—some willingly\, some unwittingly—have been involved in science’s boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They’ve tested France’s first guillotines\, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle\, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin\, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure\, from heart transplants to gender confirmation surgery\, cadavers have helped make history in their quiet way. “Delightful—though never disrespectful” (Les Simpson\, Time Out New York)\, Stiff investigates the strange lives of our bodies postmortem and answers the question: What should we do after we die? \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Mindfulness Among the Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Experience Congressional Cemetery through Mindfulness\nImmerse yourself in the natural and cultural features of Congressional Cemetery through an outdoor mindfulness tour. Outdoor mindfulness is akin to Shinrin-yoku\, or forest bathing\, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind\, promotes well-being\, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The session begins with warm-ups\, centering\, and breathing exercises. These are followed by a non-strenuous walk\, and an extended sit. We will slow down\, be curious\, and take time to connect with the natural and historic place that is Congressional Cemetery. Mindfulness Among the Monuments is lead by Susan West Montgomery. Susan is a certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide providing outdoor mindfulness excursions in the Washington DC region and beyond. She specializes in developing customized excursions at historic and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. Tickets are $25 and limited to 20 participants. \nClick here to purchase tickets!

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Sept. 9\, we are very pleased to present the award-winning feature documentary JACK HAS A PLAN. We saw the amazing and funny film at this year’s DC Independent Film Festival\, where it won the “Best of the Fest” award. The filmmaker\, Bradley Berman\, generously gave us permission for a single screening at Congressional. \nWhen Jack Tuller\, a man with a terminal brain tumor for 25 years\, decides to end his life\, his family and friends struggle to accept his decision. Berman\, Jack’s best friend\, documents his three-year quest to die a happy man\, culminating in a permanent going-away party. The San Francisco Examiner said: “It’s as joyous\, thrilling and funny as any film about death could be.”\n\n\nThe film is\, first and foremost\, a great story about one person’s journey. But it’s also a rich exploration of death with dignity\, end-of-life wishes\, and the idea of a good death. \nWe will begin at 10 am with showing the film which will leave us some time for processing and discussion. This film’s characters show a range of beliefs and concerns that will probably be reflected among us watching the film. We will take on the challenge of talking about issues which may be controversial or emotional with curiosity and courage\, and mutual respect.\n\nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying while Fat (special guest Isabella Carr) \nOur special drop in guest will be Isabella Carr\, Founder\, Deathfat Doula. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nYes\, our topic’s use of the word “Fat” may be surprising but it is deliberate. Our guest will help us understand why she uses that term and also the term “Deathfat.” Isabella\, who is currently an MDiv Candidate at Harvard Divinity School\, offers workshops on “Deathfat\, a theological and practical approach to end-of-life care for fat people.” \nIf you have ever wondered about how we care for the dying and offer deathcare for larger bodies in our country\, this is an opportunity to ask questions and learn from Isabella. \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:September Cinematery: Dark Shadows
DESCRIPTION:Vampires who awake after centuries of slumber. Cemeteries at night. Tim Burton dark comedies. The three were made for each other. We hope that you will accept our invitation and come enjoy a humble showing of all three for a screening of Dark Shadows. Originally a 1960s vampire soap opera of the same name\,  Johnny Depp jumped at the chance to star in the lead role in the remake of one of his childhood favorites. With the persuasive powers of a vampire himself\, Depp even convinced his longtime friend and collaborator Tim Burton to direct this quirky fish out of water re-imagining of the 60s classic. We hope that you will join us for the conclusion of the Summer of Surreal and please\, bring plenty of steak to ward off any vampires who might be among the attendees. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. The recommended donation is $10 per person\, although you are welcome to give more. \nYou can purchase your tickets HERE! \n \nWe would like to thank our community partner and neighbor Fulcrum Properties Group for sponsoring the Cinematery screen and complimentary popcorn.

SUMMARY:The War of 1812: Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:The various internments at Congressional Cemetery are a time capsule of American history. And this is especially true for the War of 1812. Sometimes called the “2nd War for Independence” the conflict saw the fledgling Americans squaring off with the British once again. Across the continent and on the high seas\, Americans fought under the Stars and Stripes for their country. Due to Congressional Cemetery’s status as one of the first burial grounds of national resonance\, many War of 1812 connected individuals decided on Congressional as their final resting place\, including two Commanding Generals of the Army\, a Choctaw War Chief\, and the man who saved the original copy of the Constitution from destruction. \nCome and discover the War of 1812 in an incredibly unique way\, through the gravestones and memorials left behind by those who were there. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe tour is rain or shine. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person \nYou may purchase tickets here!

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Companion animal doulas \nOur special drop in guest will be Alexis Mitchell\, a student getting her training as a companion animal end of life doula. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nMost people have never heard of a “death doula” or an “end-of-life doula” so even fewer have heard of a companion animal eol-death doula\, so I was fascinated to hear from Alexis about her studies at the The University of Vermont. I have questions! And\, I’m sure\, so do you. What drew her to this? How might it differ from supporting dying humans and their families? What are her hopes for this work? \nThis is a topic of special interest for us here. This is Congressional Cemetery\, where dogs in particular are such an important part of the community and we have a special space for memorializing companion animals.
