SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 10 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 27th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nNOTE! Despite the rain we ARE STILL HOLDING THE CEREMONY. Come in the front gate and follow the lighted path to the chapel where we will be warm and dry together. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. Families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us IN THE CHAPEL of Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E St SE in Washington\, DC from 7pm to 8pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nIf you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery with images of candles and inviting the public to add the names of people’s children lost\, at any age\, recent or long ago. If you cannot attend in person we invite you to send the name of your person for us to add to the exhibit. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nFrom her HCC official bio: \nIn 2012\, fresh out of Savannah College of Art and Design Historic Preservation graduate program\, Margaret Canilang started her journey at Congressional Cemetery\, but her love for cemeteries was already well-developed.  She was fascinated with the conservation science in her classes\, particularly the properties and characteristics of stone.  Even more specifically\, slate.  And what better place to observe stone than in a cemetery?  She was so enthralled\, she wrote her Master’s thesis\, “The Cemetery as a Cultural Institution: Reforming Preservation Initiatives in Garden Cemeteries through Management\, Conservation\, Outreach\, and Protection.“  \nWe asked Margaret to join us for a Death Doula Day to help us better understand what we are seeing\, in terms of human remains\, when we walk through the grounds. Where are the bodies? How many are there? Are they all buried in the ground? Do they all have markers? What is a vault? What is a cenotaph? We have so many questions. And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. After graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in History from Old Dominion University\, A.J. worked at Hampton Roads Naval Museum as an Educator and at the National Museum of the United States Army as an Education Specialist- Lead before joining the staff at Historic Congressional Cemetery. He is the author of “The Navy’s City: Norfolk’s Military History” in A History Lover’s Guide to Norfolk and is a contributor to Washington History Magazine. He is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about all things history and is always eager to share the amazing stories of the past.  He specializes in American military history\, with a particular focus on the American Civil War and World War II. He enjoys reading\, sports\, cups of black coffee\, and is an avid Disc Golf player. Built to house the seats of federal government\, the nation’s capital soon became a city in its own right\, a place where people lived\, worked\, and\, of course\, died. DESCRIPTION:Who protected memorials at BLM fence? (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. DESCRIPTION:DCVC October Gathering at the Congressional Cemetery \nDCVC is thrilled to return to Congressional Cemetery for our October gathering! VC is a nonprofit collective of leading documentary filmmakers and video journalists from across the world. We’re run entirely by volunteers and we host regular screenings of 3-4 short documentaries followed by chats with or messages from the creators. The idea is to build on our creative community here in DC and inspire our members to continue telling important stories. \nOctober 26th\, we’ll be screening films all around Life & Death. All are welcome – whether you’re a filmmaker or not! Pizza and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. This event will be outdoors and picnic-style so bringing blankets and camping chairs is recommended. DESCRIPTION:Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of October 24\, her birthday\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. This new signage will celebrate Lockwood’s self made origins as a Western New York native.  A short cupcake reception will follow at The Lockwood. \nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP HERE.  \nSpecial thanks to Royalton-Hartland Central School Class of 1972 for their generous donation of the new signage and to the people of Middleport\, NY for honoring one of their own. \n

DESCRIPTION:Dead Man’s Run is Congressional Cemetery’s annual 5k race. And in 2023\, it’s back and spookier than ever! Please join us Saturday\, October 14 at 5:30 PM for the region’s most death defying and thematic 5k race. This bare bones run is the best way to stay ahead of your grave…by running among them! The race starts with a toll of the funeral bell and continues throughout the Cemetery and onto the Anacostia Trail for a ghostly evening run full of spooky music and other fun! \nCostumes are encouraged\, with prizes for best individual costume and best team costume! Form a team to compete with your friends – and we love to see creative team names. A panel of judges will select the winner. \nAll proceeds from Congressional Cemetery events\, including Dead Man’s Run\, help support our 501(c)(3) organization and fund the preservation of this National Historic Landmark” \nRegister here! Dead Man’s Run 5k Registration Page (zippy-reg.com) \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 5:30 pm inside the cemetery registration opens at 4:00 pm).\n \nCost: $35 for the race \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. \nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRunning with a pup? Please: no retractable leashes; all participating dogs must be properly vaccinated and well-socialized. \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \n​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nCostume Contest:  \nDressing for the occasion? In addition to prizes for the top finishers\, a panel of judge will award prizes to the top individual and team costumes. Entry into the contest in on race day only. Find our panel of judges near the starting line\, fill out a small registration card\, and the judges will check out your costume. Be sure to arrive early to register to win! \nT-shirts (tank tops\, long sleeve and sweatshirts!): Can be purchased here\, by runners and spectators. So we’ve asked Laura G. to join us to talk about yoga and breathing and the role and meaning of the corpse pose. Laura will lead us in a bit of “chair yoga” as well. \nLaura “Narayani” Gubisch is a long time hatha yoga teacher focused on the practice of relaxation\, or corpse pose\, and absolutely loves teaching this pose (and many others) under the beautiful trees at the cemetery! \nAnd to think that Laura the Death Doula just thought of that part of yoga class as “the nap.” \nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bad Art Day! (special facilitator\, Liana Mensh) \nThis week we have a special facilitator and our death doula will be assisting. Liana Mensh*\, an art director here in DC\, is taking the lead on a special experience. During our “Bucket List” session a few months ago it came up that so many of us have a lot of “aspirational” art and craft supplies. We buy them with good intentions but don’t use them\, and they haunt us and taunt us. \nSo\, we’re inviting you to grab those unused marker sets\, glitter pens\, glue guns and watercolors and bring them down. Not to make great art\, though. We’re going to make some bad art and have good fun doing it. We’re going to let go of the projects that are taking up space in our closets and causing us regret. We’ll make stuff for a few hours and then swap items freely: bring some\, take some others home\, and with our newfound creativity and freedom not to do things expertly we will give these items new life. \nBeing death positive is about living fully. Let’s not let our artsy crafty impulses cramp our style! \nPLEASE BRING your unused ART SUPPLIES\, CRAFT SUPPLIES\, interesting objects\, sparkly things\, gewgaws and gimcracks. Feel free to leave them behind after we play\, and adopt other people’s aspirational artsy crafty things. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome.
