SUMMARY:Qing Ming [Grave Sweeping Day] with the 1882 Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Join Congressional Cemetery and the 1882 Foundation on April 6 for grave-cleaning and memorialization of our Range 99 Chinese American Memorial! \nHCC staff\, representatives from the 1882 foundation\, and families get together to dedicate new memorial bricks and launch HCC’s new Range 99 pamphlet to the public. \nKicking off at 10 AM\, our Qing Ming celebration will start with remarks and a dedication ceremony\, before a private youth group engages in cleaning activities to honor the memories of those who came before. \nThe 1882 Foundation is a non-profit organization based out of DC Chinatown that seeks to broaden public awareness of the history and continuing significance of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It does this through building collaborations nationally focused on organizing an annual 1882 Symposium in Washington D.C.\, recording oral histories and preserving sites guided by Talk Story concepts\, and strengthening public education about the Chinese and Asian American experience by promoting attention to curriculum content and resources\, encouraging teacher workshops\, and making material more easily accessible for educators and researchers. \nLearn more about them here!\nThe event is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP below.

SUMMARY:Celebration for New Art Installation: The Landscape Listens by Tommy Bobo
DESCRIPTION:Historic Congressional Cemetery is thrilled to announce a new\, temporary public art installation by artist Tommy Bobo\, The Landscape Listens. Please join us for the opening reception with the artist\, curator\, and cemetery staff on Thursday\, March 28th\, 6-8pm. \nThe installation will be on view to the public March 28-June 30\, 2024 at the end of our 9/11 Memorial Trail\, just past the Totem Poles. \nThe event is free to attend and reservations are not required. If you plan to attend\, we request that you please RSVP below. \nAbout the Installation\nAligning with the peak blooms of Congressional’s three dozen cherry blossom trees\, Washington D.C.-based artist Tommy Bobo\, in conjunction with Congressional Cemetery\, will present a site-specific sculptural installation at a memorial site located in the historic acreage of the cemetery in the style of a ‘wind phone’. \nA wind phone\, or a kaze no denwa (風の電話 )\, is a type of art installation originally conceived of by Itaru Sasaki in his garden in Otsuchi\, Japan. It offers a point of connection to speak to those dwelling in otherworldly planes\, creating a space for mourning and remembrance. \nIn The Landscape Listens\, a small meadow of discrete mirrored sculptures will float inches off the ground and veil the cemetery’s landscape. Each element is designed to kinetically respond to air currents in the environment. The reflective pools of Bobo’s installation act as a vehicle to carry remembrances across the wind\, ferrying the words spoken into the wind phone to people beyond. The Landscape Listens is curated by Ashley Molese\, Historic Congressional Cemetery’s inaugural Curator-in-Residence.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This is our final Death Doula Day activity for 2023. \nThis end of year session in our end of life topic will be a celebration and a remembrance of an extraordinary project. Come with a dish to share for a Death Doula Day community meal\, from 11am to 1pm. \nCome remember the activities\, the guests\, the conversations we engaged in over the year and reconnect with others who have been with us one time\, many times\, or even haven’t been able to attend but always wanted to! \nRSVP here. \nWhat is Death Doula Days? \nNo one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Immortalizing memories through photography (special guest\, Kitty Linton)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur special guest will be our own Kitty Linton\, HCC’s social media contributor and photographer. The exercise she will lead will be from 10:30am to 11:30. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nKitty is a professional photographer originally from London\, England and when she’s not taking photos of the cemetery\, she is documenting the living. \nShe has been fascinated by the technology and power of photography since she was quite young and is passionate in her pursuit of creatively capturing people’s most meaningful memories.\nKitty sees the profound impact photography has on the way we remember others\, and the way we perceive our own permanence. \nHave you ever found an old photograph tucked away in a dusty album and felt a rush of memories flooding back? The sight of a familiar face\, the backdrop of a special place\, or a moment with a loved one – these are triggers for our memories\, like keys that unlock the doors to our past. \nYour assignment for this session is to bring one photograph\, printed or digital\, that captures a memory with someone who has died. We will focus on the memory within the photo\, very specifically\, not the before or after or the story of that person. Just that memory within the frame. \nBy extension\, we will be exploring the role of photographs in our relationships with people and how we will live on after death. \nWe will also share a list of resources to dig deeper into this topic. How can we organize and save these memories? Is there a difference between digital and printed? Photos copied from other photos? Manipulated images. SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 10 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 27th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nNOTE! Despite the rain we ARE STILL HOLDING THE CEREMONY. Come in the front gate and follow the lighted path to the chapel where we will be warm and dry together. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. Families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us IN THE CHAPEL of Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E St SE in Washington\, DC from 7pm to 8pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nIf you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery with images of candles and inviting the public to add the names of people’s children lost\, at any age\, recent or long ago. If you cannot attend in person we invite you to send the name of your person for us to add to the exhibit. For two months\, the installation will draw attention to the losses and the resilience of families. \nWe also invite you to bring a wind chime to hang on the cemetery gate during the ceremony to add a beautiful sound to the candle light on the grounds during the ceremony. \nThe DC Chapter of Compassionate Friends will be leading the ceremony and the public is welcome. \nPlease CLICK HERE to let us know you plan to join us for this ceremony. \nIf you have questions or want to volunteer\, email us at this link.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bodies above and below ground (special guest\, Margaret Canilang) \nOur special drop in guest will be Margaret Canilang\, HCC Director of Conservation. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nFrom her HCC official bio: \nIn 2012\, fresh out of Savannah College of Art and Design Historic Preservation graduate program\, Margaret Canilang started her journey at Congressional Cemetery\, but her love for cemeteries was already well-developed.  She was fascinated with the conservation science in her classes\, particularly the properties and characteristics of stone.  Even more specifically\, slate.  And what better place to observe stone than in a cemetery?  She was so enthralled\, she wrote her Master’s thesis\, “The Cemetery as a Cultural Institution: Reforming Preservation Initiatives in Garden Cemeteries through Management\, Conservation\, Outreach\, and Protection.“  \nWe asked Margaret to join us for a Death Doula Day to help us better understand what we are seeing\, in terms of human remains\, when we walk through the grounds. Where are the bodies? How many are there? Are they all buried in the ground? Do they all have markers? What is a vault? What is a cenotaph? We have so many questions. Margaret has answers! \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:December 2\, 2023 \nThis Saturday’s topic is “What is Loving End of Life Preparation?” \nOur special drop in guests will be Catherine\, Death Project Manager; Gabby Jimenez\, The Hospice Heart ; and Lisa Pahl of TheDeathDeck. As always when we have special guests for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. This week you get to meet three people who have collaborated together in the past\, hoping to share their tools\, resources\, and information with others who want to provide end of life care without fear or uncertainty. They care about this issue because they want to help improve the way human beings are cared for when they die and when they grieve. They also believe that planning is an act of love\, and logistics are a form of care work. \nCatherine\, your Death Project Manager\, is the creator of the Mortality Workbook\, a toolkit to collect what your loved ones should know before you go\, so that you can rest in peace. \nGabby\, a hospice nurse and an end-of-life doula\, wants people to remember that their experience is not about us\, and the most compassionate thing we can do is meet them where they are\, not where we want them to be. \nLisa is a hospice social worker and co-creator of The Death Deck and The E•O•L Deck\, tools that encourage conversations about what matters most in our lives and our deaths. \nThey will be joining us remotely\, a first-time thing for Death Doula Days! \nMeet our special guests on Saturday and ask them your questions. Examples of questions you may have may relate to the planning stages such as\, what paperwork to start with now? How to have these conversations with loved ones? \nYou may also have questions about the dying process like\, Can they hear us\, and what is important to say at the bedside? Does it hurt them when they stop eating and drinking? Do the medications given at the end of life hasten death? \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp by clicking HERE so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Military Death \nOur special drop in guest will be A.J. Orlikoff\, Congressional Cemetery’s own Director of Public Engagement\, for a Q&A on military death. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you will have the opportunity to ask AJ questions about a topic of special interest to him\, and of course for all of us at a place like Congressional Cemetery. How do we understand death for military service members and veterans? What are the customs and obligations of our country to service members? How do we memorialize and remember? And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? \n

SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club November (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The harrowing true survival story of an early polar expedition that went terribly awry–with the ship frozen in ice and the crew trapped inside for the entire sunless\, Antarctic winter–in the tradition of David Grann\, Nathaniel Philbrick\, and Hampton Sides \nIn August 1897\, thirty-one-year-old commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail aboard the Belgica\, fueled by a profound sense of adventure and dreams of claiming glory for his native Belgium. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But the commandant’s plans for a three-year expedition to reach the magnetic South Pole would be thwarted at each turn. Before the ship cleared South America\, it had already broken down\, run aground\, and lost several key crew members\, leaving behind a group with dubious experience for such an ambitious voyage… \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Founding the Federal City: Capital Connections Tour
DESCRIPTION:Established in 1800\, Washington DC was the fledgling capital of a fledgling nation. Built to house the seats of federal government\, the nation’s capital soon became a city in its own right\, a place where people lived\, worked\, and\, of course\, died. A mix of congressmen\, merchants\, military officers\, diplomats\, architects\, and enslaved individuals comprised the fabric of the new capital\, an experimental mix of people in an experimental new nation. \nWe invite you to experience the lives of the people in the early days of the Federal City in a new special tour of the cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays\, 11:00-3:00. \nThe tour is rain or shine. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person \nYou may purchase tickets here!

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Who protected memorials at BLM fence? (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. What did “black lives matter” mean to Nadine? \nWashington Post: A White House fence’s Black Lives Matter art has been saved for history \nNPR: She guarded the Black Lives Matter memorial. Now\, she’s working to protect its art \nDistrict of Columbia Public Library DIGDC: Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence Photographs Collection \nNBC Washington: Two Activists Unite to Protect BLM Signs at Lafayette Square \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp by clicking HERE so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Tragic Lives & Demise
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC\, like any American setting\, is no stranger to tragedy. It textured the lives of the millions of people who have called the region home. Their stories reflect our story as a nation\, helping us understand the past to inform our future. In this macabre mirror\, we can catch glimpses of tragic twists of fate endured by them. And while these tragedies influenced the course of their lives\, it didn’t define them. Rather\, it was the triumph over the tragedy\, the beauty in the sorrow\, that did. \nAcross 4 evenings this October\, discover a selection of tragic tales of Congressional Cemetery’s residents.
Learn how they are alive today in our memory. Encounter them\, and their stories\, brought back to life by our talented actors.  Bear witness to their legacies. SUMMARY:Belva Lockwood Signage Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of October 24\, her birthday\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. This new signage will celebrate Lockwood’s self made origins as a Western New York native.  A short cupcake reception will follow at The Lockwood. \nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP HERE.  \nSpecial thanks to Royalton-Hartland Central School Class of 1972 for their generous donation of the new signage and to the people of Middleport\, NY for honoring one of their own. \n
