In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. That’s right\, we have the Tim Burton classic Beetlejuice on deck to kick off the Cinematery summer season. \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at an atmospheric National Historic Landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset (for this film\, gates will open at 7:30 and the film will begin between 8:30-8:45). Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. DESCRIPTION:Please join Historic Congressional Cemetery and the Daughters of the American Revolution to dedicate a new sign for Belva Lockwood! \nBelva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of May 19th\, her death day\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. There will be some brief remarks at the gravesite\, rain or shine! \nThank you to the Daughters of the American Revolution for the new historic signage to highlight Belva Lockwood’s achievements and life. \n

Registration begins at 7:30 AM in the Chapel.\n \nCost: $35 for the race ($30 early bird pricing for all reservations prior to February 26!) \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \nThe Course: \nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards: \nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. \nDogs:  \nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. DESCRIPTION:Historic Congressional Cemetery is thrilled to announce a new\, temporary public art installation by artist Tommy Bobo\, The Landscape Listens. Please join us for the opening reception with the artist\, curator\, and cemetery staff on Thursday\, March 28th\, 6-8pm. \nThe installation will be on view to the public March 28-June 30\, 2024 at the end of our 9/11 Memorial Trail\, just past the Totem Poles. \nThe event is free to attend and reservations are not required. If you plan to attend\, we request that you please RSVP below. \nAbout the Installation\nAligning with the peak blooms of Congressional’s three dozen cherry blossom trees\, Washington D.C.-based artist Tommy Bobo\, in conjunction with Congressional Cemetery\, will present a site-specific sculptural installation at a memorial site located in the historic acreage of the cemetery in the style of a ‘wind phone’. \nA wind phone\, or a kaze no denwa (風の電話 )\, is a type of art installation originally conceived of by Itaru Sasaki in his garden in Otsuchi\, Japan. It offers a point of connection to speak to those dwelling in otherworldly planes\, creating a space for mourning and remembrance. \nIn The Landscape Listens\, a small meadow of discrete mirrored sculptures will float inches off the ground and veil the cemetery’s landscape. Each element is designed to kinetically respond to air currents in the environment. The reflective pools of Bobo’s installation act as a vehicle to carry remembrances across the wind\, ferrying the words spoken into the wind phone to people beyond. The Landscape Listens is curated by Ashley Molese\, Historic Congressional Cemetery’s inaugural Curator-in-Residence.

The exercise she will lead will be from 10:30am to 11:30. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nKitty is a professional photographer originally from London\, England and when she’s not taking photos of the cemetery\, she is documenting the living. \nShe has been fascinated by the technology and power of photography since she was quite young and is passionate in her pursuit of creatively capturing people’s most meaningful memories.\nKitty sees the profound impact photography has on the way we remember others\, and the way we perceive our own permanence. \nHave you ever found an old photograph tucked away in a dusty album and felt a rush of memories flooding back? The sight of a familiar face\, the backdrop of a special place\, or a moment with a loved one – these are triggers for our memories\, like keys that unlock the doors to our past. \nYour assignment for this session is to bring one photograph\, printed or digital\, that captures a memory with someone who has died. We will focus on the memory within the photo\, very specifically\, not the before or after or the story of that person. Just that memory within the frame. \nBy extension\, we will be exploring the role of photographs in our relationships with people and how we will live on after death. \nWe will also share a list of resources to dig deeper into this topic. How can we organize and save these memories? Is there a difference between digital and printed? Photos copied from other photos? Manipulated images. And the newer technologies that may change our relationship with photography. \nAnd\, rumor has it\, a photo may be taken on this date\, using an older technology and creating a single original image. SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 10 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 27th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nNOTE! Despite the rain we ARE STILL HOLDING THE CEREMONY. Come in the front gate and follow the lighted path to the chapel where we will be warm and dry together. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. Families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us IN THE CHAPEL of Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E St SE in Washington\, DC from 7pm to 8pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nIf you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery with images of candles and inviting the public to add the names of people’s children lost\, at any age\, recent or long ago. If you cannot attend in person we invite you to send the name of your person for us to add to the exhibit. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nFrom her HCC official bio: \nIn 2012\, fresh out of Savannah College of Art and Design Historic Preservation graduate program\, Margaret Canilang started her journey at Congressional Cemetery\, but her love for cemeteries was already well-developed.  She was fascinated with the conservation science in her classes\, particularly the properties and characteristics of stone.  Even more specifically\, slate.  And what better place to observe stone than in a cemetery?  She was so enthralled\, she wrote her Master’s thesis\, “The Cemetery as a Cultural Institution: Reforming Preservation Initiatives in Garden Cemeteries through Management\, Conservation\, Outreach\, and Protection.“  \nWe asked Margaret to join us for a Death Doula Day to help us better understand what we are seeing\, in terms of human remains\, when we walk through the grounds. Where are the bodies? How many are there? Are they all buried in the ground? Do they all have markers? What is a vault? What is a cenotaph? We have so many questions. They care about this issue because they want to help improve the way human beings are cared for when they die and when they grieve. They also believe that planning is an act of love\, and logistics are a form of care work. \nCatherine\, your Death Project Manager\, is the creator of the Mortality Workbook\, a toolkit to collect what your loved ones should know before you go\, so that you can rest in peace. \nGabby\, a hospice nurse and an end-of-life doula\, wants people to remember that their experience is not about us\, and the most compassionate thing we can do is meet them where they are\, not where we want them to be. \nLisa is a hospice social worker and co-creator of The Death Deck and The E•O•L Deck\, tools that encourage conversations about what matters most in our lives and our deaths. \nThey will be joining us remotely\, a first-time thing for Death Doula Days! \nMeet our special guests on Saturday and ask them your questions. How do we understand death for military service members and veterans? What are the customs and obligations of our country to service members? How do we memorialize and remember? And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. After graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in History from Old Dominion University\, A.J. worked at Hampton Roads Naval Museum as an Educator and at the National Museum of the United States Army as an Education Specialist- Lead before joining the staff at Historic Congressional Cemetery. He is the author of “The Navy’s City: Norfolk’s Military History” in A History Lover’s Guide to Norfolk and is a contributor to Washington History Magazine. He is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about all things history and is always eager to share the amazing stories of the past.  He specializes in American military history\, with a particular focus on the American Civil War and World War II. He enjoys reading\, sports\, cups of black coffee\, and is an avid Disc Golf player. DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided.
