SUMMARY:Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying
DESCRIPTION:At Congressional\, we remember our veterans. Over 1700 veterans from almost every major American armed conflict are interred in the historic grounds of Congressional Cemetery. And while they are no longer here\, their memories live on. To help honor and remember\, we invite you to join Congressional Cemetery and our community partners\, the District of Columbia National Guard\, for the annual Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying Ceremony and event. \nThe ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM at Congressional Cemetery. Upon arrival\, attendees are directed to the ceremony area. At the conclusion of the ceremony (around 11:30 AM)\, attendees and volunteers will assist with the placing of wreaths at veteran graves. Attending the ceremony is free but we ask that you please RSVP using the link below. In addition\, chairs are provided for the ceremony and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \nPlease note that this an outdoor event with no rain date. We advise dressing for the elements. We also recommend wearing appropriate footwear\, as the ground is uneven across the cemetery. Due to our status as a National Historic Landmark\, we are unable to be ADA compliant. \nWreaths Across America is a US-based Non-Profit Organization started in 2007 by Wreath Producer Morrill Worcester. Every year\, in partnership with shipping companies\, truckers\, living veterans\, cemetery staff\, and all number of volunteers\, Wreaths Across America place wreaths on the graves of veterans who have passed to “Remember\, Honor\, and Teach” about the memory of their lives and service. \nIf you are interested in attending the ceremony and potentially placing a wreath\, please RSVP here.\nIf you are interested in donating a wreath for the ceremony\, please see our page HERE.\nLearn more about Wreaths Across America at their website.\nWe greatly appreciate the supporting of the following organizations to help make this event possible:\nNational Defense Post 46- The American Legion\nThe District of Columbia National Guard\nGuerrilla Gardeners of Washington DC

SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 8 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 28th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nFamilies in the community who have suffered the loss of sons and daughters of any age deserve our attention and caring. At our cemetery we know the importance of remembering\, honoring\, and speaking the names of those we have lost. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. On the 2nd Sunday of December\, families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us outside the gates of the cemetery to show families they are not alone\, and that their loss is seen and heard and matters to us. Come gather at 7pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nCome support families remembering their loved ones of every age. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery and creating an enormous collective wind chime on the cemetery fence together. We invite you to bring a wind chime or things that sparkle or shine to hang on the cemetery gate during the ceremony to add a beautiful sound to the candlelight on the grounds during the ceremony. (see a video of the 2023 wind chime.) \nThe DC Chapter of Compassionate Friends will be leading the ceremony and the public is welcome. If you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nPlease CLICK HERE to let us know you plan to join us for this ceremony. \nIf you have questions or want to volunteer\, email us at this link.

SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Scandal & Slander
DESCRIPTION:Few American cities embody scandal quite like Washington\, D.C. As the heart of political power and prestige throughout U.S. history\, Washington has been the stage for some of the nation’s most infamous scandals. Where power thrives\, controversy follows\, and the truth remains elusive. Slander\, libel\, and gossip have all shaped and skewed the historical record\, making it challenging to separate fact from fiction. Many of the people at the center of these scandals—or who became infamous themselves—lived\, worked\, and died in the nation’s capital. But who were these individuals? What are their stories? \nThis fall\, we invite you to uncover tales of scandal from the residents of Congressional Cemetery—a macabre glimpse into D.C.’s notorious past. Discover how their legacies endure in our collective memory. Encounter those shrouded in the past\, brought vividly to life by our talented actors\, and witness them as they tell their stories. Join us for Soul Strolls 2024: Scandal and Slander. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 18-19 and October 25-26.
