SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair for the dates you will be joining us. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE \nFacilitators for 2024: \nMarch 7     Sarah La Rocca (Congressional Cemetery) \nApril 4    Laura Lyster-Mensh (Congressional Cemetery) \nMay 2     Robin Miniter \nJune 6     Diane Ullius \nAugust 1     AJ Orlikoff (Congressional Cemetery) \nSeptember 5    Kitty Linton (Congressional Cemetery) \nOctober 3     Lisa Yanez \nNovember 14    Sam Stebbins \nDecember 5     Lisa Munsat

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club May (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder\, the killer\, and the great fair that obsessed them both. \nTwo men\, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work\, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham\, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures\, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington\, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes\, a young doctor who\, in a malign parody of the White City\, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table\, gas chamber\, and 3\,000-degree crematorium \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club March (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Enter a grave new world of fascination and delight as award-winning writer Peter Ross uncovers the stories and glories of graveyards. Who are London’s outcast dead and why is David Bowie their guardian angel? What is the remarkable truth about Phoebe Hessel\, who disguised herself as a man to fight alongside her sweetheart\, and went on to live in the reigns of five monarchs? Why is a Bristol cemetery the perfect wedding venue for goths? \nAll of these sorrowful mysteries – and many more – are answered in A Tomb With A View\, a book for anyone who has ever wandered through a field of crooked headstones and wondered about the lives and deaths of those who lie beneath. \nSo push open the rusting gate\, push back the ivy\, and take a look inside… \nStill interested?

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club January (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:The Angel Makers is a true-crime story like no other–a 1920s midwife who may have been the century’s most prolific killer leading a murder ring of women responsible for the deaths of at least 160 men. \nThe horror occurred in a rustic farming enclave in modern-day Hungary. To look at the unlikely lineup of murderesses–village wives\, mothers\, and daughters–was to come to the shocking realization that this could have happened anywhere\, and to anyone. At the center of it all was a sharp-minded village midwife\, a “smiling Buddha” known as Auntie Suzy\, who distilled arsenic from flypaper and distributed it to the women of Nagyrév. “Why are you bothering with him?” Auntie Suzy would ask\, as she produced an arsenic-filled vial from her apron pocket… \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Death Cafe
DESCRIPTION:As an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death. But just what is a Death Café? \nDeath Café is a global movement facilitating thoughts and discussion about the often taboo subject of death\, It’s a intimate informal gathering to discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea. It has no agenda other than providing a safe space to have an open ended conversation. \nPlease join us for our Historic Congressional Cemetery Death Café on Tuesday\, November 29 from 5:30 PM- 7:00 PM. We are delighted to welcome back Liz Gregg\, LICSW\, the Director of Care Services at Capitol Hill Village\, to moderate the event. Complimentary refreshments will be served but we ask that you consider brining a food or beverage item to share with the group. A $5 donation\, to help cover event costs\, is also welcome but not required. In addition\, you do not have to use your real name to register\, just a name you will recognize so we can check you in at the door. \nReserve your spot HERE. \n  \nSpecial Thanks to our partner for the Death Café\, Capitol Hill Village.
