SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair for the dates you will be joining us. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE \nFacilitators for 2024: \nMarch 7     Sarah La Rocca (Congressional Cemetery) \nApril 4    Laura Lyster-Mensh (Congressional Cemetery) \nMay 2     Robin Miniter \nJune 6     Diane Ullius \nAugust 1     AJ Orlikoff (Congressional Cemetery) \nSeptember 5    Kitty Linton (Congressional Cemetery) \nOctober 3     Lisa Yanez \nNovember 14    Sam Stebbins \nDecember 5     Lisa Munsat

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club November (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Science is a force for good in the world—at least usually. But sometimes\, when obsession gets the better of scientists\, they twist a noble pursuit into something sinister. Under this spell\, knowledge isn’t everything\, it’s the only thing—no matter the cost. Bestselling author Sam Kean tells the true story of what happens when unfettered ambition pushes otherwise rational men and women to cross the line in the name of science\, trampling ethical boundaries and often committing crimes in the process. \nThe Icepick Surgeon masterfully guides the reader across two thousand years of history\, beginning with Cleopatra’s dark deeds in ancient Egypt. The book reveals the origins of much of modern science in the transatlantic slave trade of the 1700s\, as well as Thomas Edison’s mercenary support of the electric chair and the warped logic of the spies who infiltrated the Manhattan Project. But the sins of science aren’t all safely buried in the past. Many of them\, Kean reminds us\, still affect us today. \nStill interested? Sign up here!

SUMMARY:Dia De Los Muertos At Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Dia De Los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \n“I have been in DC for 14 years and a resident of the Capitol Hill area. I was born and raised in the southwest\, AZ and TX. I come from a Mexican-American family that has been in the southwestern part of the country for generations. \nDay of the dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy. \nIt’s a great pleasure to celebrate this year in such a historic and treasured location.  Excited to come together with our neighbors to share this special occasion.” \nDia de Los Muertos is a celebration that honors ancestors and connects the living with the dead. For our celebration\, we welcome the public to join us in the spirit of the holiday by bringing your memories to add to a community ofrenda at the cemetery. Bring photos of people you have loved and have lost to death as well as mementoes representing them: the foods and symbols of the things they loved and memories you shared. We will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Dia De Los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and mourning. \nOn November 2 at 11am\, guests are invited to join us at the historic chapel in the center of the cemetery where an enormous community ofrenda will honor the ancestors. The public is welcomed to bring photos of loved ones to add to the community ofrenda\, as well as foods to share that your person or people enjoyed. Join us to decorate sugar skulls\, make paper flowers\, and learn about the holiday. No experience necessary. \nIn addition\, the cemetery is collaborating with Crayola Flowers for a special way to celebrate the holiday\, beautify our grounds\, and honor those buried at our historic cemetery. Participants can purchase flowers to bring to the graves of loved ones and any graves with special meaning to you. The cemetery will also have flowers available for our Dia De Los Muertos participants to decorate graves of your choice throughout the cemetery. \nAt the end of the celebration we will gather outside in a procession around the chapel and out to open the gate to bid the ancestors farewell\, inviting them to return again next year. \nAre you joining us? CLICK HERE to let us know to expect you. You will receive a reminder a few days before November 2. \nNotes: \n·      What is an ofrenda? CLICK HERE \n·      Let’s bring copies of photos\, only\, please. You are welcome to scan photos and email them for us to print them out. \n·      All items on the ofrendas will be donated or recycled if not taken home on the 3rd. \n·      Please bring foods to share that your person enjoyed in disposable containers or ones you will bring home. \nThis is a community event and free of charge offered by the Cemetery’s nonprofit foundation. Donations to the Foundation are welcomed and help us open the grounds for these impactful gatherings. Donations of your time helping out during the event\, of flowers\, and of food to share all serve our goal in offering death education and awareness activities at our historic cemetery\, the Greatest Undertaking in DC! \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club September (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:“Utterly fascinating.” —Bill Bryson A groundbreaking exploration of the science of why and how we age and die—from Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist Venki Ramakrishnan. The knowledge of death is so terrifying that we live most of our lives in denial of it. Throughout human history—from the immortal afterlife of Judeo-Christian thought to the cycle of reincarnation posited by many Eastern religions—we have developed beliefs that allow us to avoid recognizing its finality. One of the most difficult moments of childhood must be when each of us first realizes that not only we but all our loved ones will die—and there is nothing we can do about it. Or at least\, there hasn’t been. Today\, we are living through a revolution in biology. Giant strides are being made in understanding why we age—and why some species live longer than others. Could we eventually cheat disease and death and live for a very long time\, possibly many times our current lifespan? \nStill interested? Sign up here!

DESCRIPTION:Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder\, the killer\, and the great fair that obsessed them both. \nTwo men\, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work\, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham\, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures\, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington\, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes\, a young doctor who\, in a malign parody of the White City\, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds—a torture palace complete with dissection table\, gas chamber\, and 3\,000-degree crematorium \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club March (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Enter a grave new world of fascination and delight as award-winning writer Peter Ross uncovers the stories and glories of graveyards. Who are London’s outcast dead and why is David Bowie their guardian angel? What is the remarkable truth about Phoebe Hessel\, who disguised herself as a man to fight alongside her sweetheart\, and went on to live in the reigns of five monarchs? Why is a Bristol cemetery the perfect wedding venue for goths? \nAll of these sorrowful mysteries – and many more – are answered in A Tomb With A View\, a book for anyone who has ever wandered through a field of crooked headstones and wondered about the lives and deaths of those who lie beneath. \nSo push open the rusting gate\, push back the ivy\, and take a look inside… \nStill interested?

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club January (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:The Angel Makers is a true-crime story like no other–a 1920s midwife who may have been the century’s most prolific killer leading a murder ring of women responsible for the deaths of at least 160 men. \nThe horror occurred in a rustic farming enclave in modern-day Hungary. To look at the unlikely lineup of murderesses–village wives\, mothers\, and daughters–was to come to the shocking realization that this could have happened anywhere\, and to anyone. At the center of it all was a sharp-minded village midwife\, a “smiling Buddha” known as Auntie Suzy\, who distilled arsenic from flypaper and distributed it to the women of Nagyrév. “Why are you bothering with him?” Auntie Suzy would ask\, as she produced an arsenic-filled vial from her apron pocket… \nStill interested?
