SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club March (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Two teens. Two diaries. Two social panics. One incredible fraud. \nIn 1971\, Go Ask Alice reinvented the young adult genre with a blistering portrayal of sex\, psychosis\, and teenage self-destruction. The supposed diary of a middle-class addict\, Go Ask Alice terrified adults and cemented LSD’s fearsome reputation\, fueling support for the War on Drugs. Five million copies later\, Go Ask Alice remains a divisive bestseller\, outraging censors and earning new fans\, all of them drawn by the book’s mythic premise: A Real Diary\, by Anonymous. \nBut Alice was only the beginning. \nIn 1979\, another diary rattled the culture\, setting the stage for a national meltdown. The posthumous memoir of an alleged teenage Satanist\, Jay’s Journal merged with a frightening new crisis—adolescent suicide—to create a literal witch hunt\, shattering countless lives and poisoning whole communities. \nIn reality\, Go Ask Alice and Jay’s Journal came from the same dark place: Beatrice Sparks\, a serial con artist who betrayed a grieving family\, stole a dead boy’s memory\, and lied her way to the National Book Awards. \nUnmask Alice: LSD\, Satanic Panic\, and the Imposter Behind the World’s Most Notorious Diaries is a true story of contagious deception. It stretches from Hollywood to Quantico\, and passes through a tiny patch of Utah nicknamed “the fraud capital of America.” It’s the story of a doomed romance and a vengeful celebrity. Of a lazy press and a public mob. Of two suicidal teenagers\, and their exploitation by a literary vampire. \nUnmask Alice . . . where truth is stranger than nonfiction.

SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair for the dates you will be joining us. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE\n2025 Facilitators: \n2/6/25   Lisa Malear \n3/6/25   Laura Lyster-Mensh \n4/3/25   Dixie Marroquin \n5/1/25   Caitlin Cronin \n6/5/25   Patricia Dubroof \n7/3/25   Diane Ullius \n8/7/25  Veronica Mosqueda \n9/4/25   AJ Orlikoff \n10/2/25   Kurt Deion \n11/6/25   Sam Stebbins \n12/4/25   Sarah Miller

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Remembering Daniel Smith\, "Son of a Slave" Author
DESCRIPTION:Son of a man born enslaved in 1863 during the Civil War\, Daniel Smith (1932-2022) was living proof that slavery is not distant history. His father\, 70 years old when Dan was born\, taught him to work hard and carry himself well\, even in difficult circumstances. In his educational\, professional\, and social pursuits\, Dan lived those lessons. He was both witness to and participant in nearly a century of struggle for Black Americans to advance in a nation founded on separatist principles. For the intersections he had with historical events\, political leaders\, and other luminaries\, he is often called the “Black Forrest Gump.” In his memoir Son of a Slave\, completed just before he died on Oct. 19\, 2022 at age 90\, Smith offered a first-hand account of the actions\, policies\, and people that have helped or hindered the United States from fulfilling the promise that “all men are created equal.” \nIn this first 2025 entry of the Cemetery Speaker Series\, Historic Congressional Cemetery welcomes guest speaker Loretta Neumann\, Daniel Smith’s wife\, to reflect on her husband’s life and legacy. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. Sign up below!

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club January (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Discover the science of forensics through Agatha Christie’s novels \nAgatha Christie is the bestselling novelist of all time\, and nearly every story she ever wrote involves one―or\, more commonly\, several―dead bodies. And the cause of death\, the motives behind violent crimes\, the clues that inevitably are left behind\, and the people who put the pieces together to solve the mystery invite the reader to analyze the evidence and race to find the answer before the detective does. Nearly every step of the way\, Christie outlines the nuts and bolts of early 20th-century crime detection\, relying on physical evidence to tell the real story behind the facades humans erect to escape detection. \nChristie wouldn’t have talked of “forensics” as it is understood today―most of her work predates the modern developments of forensics science―but in each tale she harnesses the power of human observation\, ingenuity\, and scientific developments of the era. A fascinating\, science-based deep dive\, The Science of Murder examines the use of fingerprints\, firearms\, handwriting\, blood spatter analysis\, toxicology\, and more in Christie’s beloved works. \nStill interested?
To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE \nFacilitators for 2024: \nMarch 7     Sarah La Rocca (Congressional Cemetery) \nApril 4    Laura Lyster-Mensh (Congressional Cemetery) \nMay 2     Robin Miniter \nJune 6     Diane Ullius \nAugust 1     AJ Orlikoff (Congressional Cemetery) \nSeptember 5    Kitty Linton (Congressional Cemetery) \nOctober 3     Lisa Yanez \nNovember 14    Sam Stebbins \nDecember 5     Lisa Munsat

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club November (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Science is a force for good in the world—at least usually. But sometimes\, when obsession gets the better of scientists\, they twist a noble pursuit into something sinister. Under this spell\, knowledge isn’t everything\, it’s the only thing—no matter the cost. Bestselling author Sam Kean tells the true story of what happens when unfettered ambition pushes otherwise rational men and women to cross the line in the name of science\, trampling ethical boundaries and often committing crimes in the process. \nThe Icepick Surgeon masterfully guides the reader across two thousand years of history\, beginning with Cleopatra’s dark deeds in ancient Egypt. The book reveals the origins of much of modern science in the transatlantic slave trade of the 1700s\, as well as Thomas Edison’s mercenary support of the electric chair and the warped logic of the spies who infiltrated the Manhattan Project. But the sins of science aren’t all safely buried in the past. Many of them\, Kean reminds us\, still affect us today. \nStill interested? Sign up here!

SUMMARY:Dia De Los Muertos At Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Dia De Los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \n“I have been in DC for 14 years and a resident of the Capitol Hill area. I was born and raised in the southwest\, AZ and TX. I come from a Mexican-American family that has been in the southwestern part of the country for generations. \nDay of the dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy. \nIt’s a great pleasure to celebrate this year in such a historic and treasured location.  Excited to come together with our neighbors to share this special occasion.” \nDia de Los Muertos is a celebration that honors ancestors and connects the living with the dead. For our celebration\, we welcome the public to join us in the spirit of the holiday by bringing your memories to add to a community ofrenda at the cemetery. Bring photos of people you have loved and have lost to death as well as mementoes representing them: the foods and symbols of the things they loved and memories you shared. We will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Dia De Los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and mourning. \nOn November 2 at 11am\, guests are invited to join us at the historic chapel in the center of the cemetery where an enormous community ofrenda will honor the ancestors. The public is welcomed to bring photos of loved ones to add to the community ofrenda\, as well as foods to share that your person or people enjoyed. Join us to decorate sugar skulls\, make paper flowers\, and learn about the holiday. No experience necessary. \nIn addition\, the cemetery is collaborating with Crayola Flowers for a special way to celebrate the holiday\, beautify our grounds\, and honor those buried at our historic cemetery. Participants can purchase flowers to bring to the graves of loved ones and any graves with special meaning to you. The cemetery will also have flowers available for our Dia De Los Muertos participants to decorate graves of your choice throughout the cemetery. \nAt the end of the celebration we will gather outside in a procession around the chapel and out to open the gate to bid the ancestors farewell\, inviting them to return again next year. \nAre you joining us? CLICK HERE to let us know to expect you. You will receive a reminder a few days before November 2. \nNotes: \n·      What is an ofrenda? CLICK HERE \n·      Let’s bring copies of photos\, only\, please. You are welcome to scan photos and email them for us to print them out. \n·      All items on the ofrendas will be donated or recycled if not taken home on the 3rd. \n·      Please bring foods to share that your person enjoyed in disposable containers or ones you will bring home. \nThis is a community event and free of charge offered by the Cemetery’s nonprofit foundation. Donations to the Foundation are welcomed and help us open the grounds for these impactful gatherings. Donations of your time helping out during the event\, of flowers\, and of food to share all serve our goal in offering death education and awareness activities at our historic cemetery\, the Greatest Undertaking in DC! \nQuestions?
