SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club July (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:On January 28\, 1742\, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men\, barely alive\, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager\, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans\,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. The men\, after being marooned for months and facing starvation\, built the flimsy craft and sailed for more than a hundred days\, traversing nearly 3\,000 miles of storm-wracked seas. They were greeted as heroes. \nBut then . . . six months later\, another\, even more decrepit craft landed on the coast of Chile. This boat contained just three castaways\, and they told a very different story. The thirty sailors who landed in Brazil were not heroes – they were mutineers. The first group responded with countercharges of their own\, of a tyrannical and murderous senior officer and his henchmen. It became clear that while stranded on the island the crew had fallen into anarchy\, with warring factions fighting for dominion over the barren wilderness. As accusations of treachery and murder flew\, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. The stakes were life-and-death–for whomever the court found guilty could hang… \n

Every year\, she co-produces alongside Improbable Comedy and Cyrus Chansler\, a special fundraiser stand up show\, Sense of Tumor\, featuring all survivors\, thrivers and caregivers. \nPatty Mata: Patty is a DC based comic\, originally from Canada\, who has hosted at the Arlington Drafthouse for Adam Conover\, Dulce Sloan and Matt Friendly. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Remembering Daniel Smith\, "Son of a Slave" Author
DESCRIPTION:Son of a man born enslaved in 1863 during the Civil War\, Daniel Smith (1932-2022) was living proof that slavery is not distant history. His father\, 70 years old when Dan was born\, taught him to work hard and carry himself well\, even in difficult circumstances. In his educational\, professional\, and social pursuits\, Dan lived those lessons. He was both witness to and participant in nearly a century of struggle for Black Americans to advance in a nation founded on separatist principles. For the intersections he had with historical events\, political leaders\, and other luminaries\, he is often called the “Black Forrest Gump.” In his memoir Son of a Slave\, completed just before he died on Oct. 19\, 2022 at age 90\, Smith offered a first-hand account of the actions\, policies\, and people that have helped or hindered the United States from fulfilling the promise that “all men are created equal.” \nIn this first 2025 entry of the Cemetery Speaker Series\, Historic Congressional Cemetery welcomes guest speaker Loretta Neumann\, Daniel Smith’s wife\, to reflect on her husband’s life and legacy. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world.
