SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club September (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:From GoodReads.com: \n\n\nFor readers of Jon Krakauer and Douglas Preston\, the critically acclaimed author and journalist Jon Billman’s fascinating\, in-depth look at people who vanish in the wilderness without a trace and those eccentric\, determined characters who try to find them. \nThese are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences\, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents\, rangers and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue. The ones that baffle the volunteers who comb the mountains\, woods and badlands. The stories that should give you pause every time you venture outdoors. \n\nInterested in learning more? Read our Blog Post about Tombs and Tomes\, or request to join our Goodreads group. \nStill interested? Sign up here! \n

SUMMARY:Mostly Mothers: The Eternal Maternal at Congressional Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Originally created for Mother’s Day visitors\, this tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives and sometimes their deaths.  Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease be aware that the cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays\, so please only visit if you’re comfortable with off-leash pups. \n$5 per person. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged. \nMeet the docent inside the front gate and the tour is rain or shine.
