DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC has always been a place of diversity. Ever since the city’s founding in 1790\, thousands of different people have lived\, worked\, and died alongside each other. And while Washingtonians have not always lived harmoniously with each other\, they have contributed to create a community. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \n \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nIn honor of Jewish American Heritage Month\, we invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on May 19\, 2024\, 1:00 PM-2:30PM for a special event. Historic Congressional Cemetery is pleased to welcome Jonathan Edelman from the Lilian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum as a Speaker Series guest. Following his keynote remarks\, he will join with docent Charles Walton to lead a thematic tour of Jewish American gravesites and monuments. Come along as they walk the grounds and retell the stories of the Jewish Americans laid to rest here\, including Thomas Lantos\, Ruth Rappaport\, and Martin Sloane. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe event is rain or shine. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 10 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 27th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nNOTE! Despite the rain we ARE STILL HOLDING THE CEREMONY. Come in the front gate and follow the lighted path to the chapel where we will be warm and dry together. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. Families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us IN THE CHAPEL of Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E St SE in Washington\, DC from 7pm to 8pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nIf you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery with images of candles and inviting the public to add the names of people’s children lost\, at any age\, recent or long ago. These invisible foes of humanity have proliferated and thrived across history\, claiming the lives of untold billions across human history. \nThe Covid-19 Pandemic illustrated to people living today the all too real prevalence of infectious diseases on human societies\, but this relevance is not a new phenomenon. Indeed\, over 100 years ago the 1918 Influenza Pandemic devasted the United States and the world. From September to December 1918 alone\, over 250\,000 people died in the United States from the deadly disease. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Alain LeRoy Locke
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery is the final resting place of Alain LeRoy Locke\, the first African American Rhodes Scholar. A philosopher\, writer\, and educator\, Locke’s work helped define the contours of the Harlem Renaissance\, helping spread African American intellectual thought across the United States in the early 20th century. In particular\, Locke’s The New Negro: An Interpretation (1925) is widely considered to be the pivotal text of the New Negro Movement. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. studied Locke’s works and cited him as an important influence when he stated on March 19\, 1968 that\, “We’re going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle\, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe.” \n \nYet Locke did not only battle racial discrimination. As a gay man\, Locke was aware of his minority status even among other African Americans. In a 1949 note\, Locke reflected on the irony of being born in the U.S. with three minority identities: “Had I been born in ancient Greece\, I would have escaped the first [his sexual identity]; in Europe\, I would have been spared the second [U.S. racial segregation policies and discrimination]; in Japan I would have been above rather than below average [height].” \n \nJune is a month of celebration for both African American heritage with Juneteenth and LGBTQ+ Americans for Pride Month. These “double minorities” are embodied in the legacy of Alain Locke. In honor of the Dean of the Harlem Renaissance\, please join us on Saturday\, June 24 at 10:30 AM for a special Cemetery Speaker Series honoring both African Americans and Gay Americans. One part speaking engagement and one part docent led tour\, the event features keynote remarks on the life and legacy of Locke from Dr. Greg Carr\, Associate Professor in the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University\, followed by a thematic tour of both African American and LGBTQ+ gravesites\, culminating of course with a visit to the grave of Alain Locke himself. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:On January 6\, 2021 the United States Capitol was assaulted by a group of protesters\, many of whom intended to disrupt the certification of the 2020 Presidential Election results. Vivid images from that day showed outnumbered United States Capitol Police Officers attempting to protect Congress members from harm. The events of January 6 illustrates the all important and central role of the Capitol Police to both the security of Congress members and American democracy. Yet\, the origins and early days of the Capitol Police are often not focused on. Indeed\, the story of the guardians of the U.S. Capitol begins in the early days of Washington DC and the American Republic. From Revolutionary War heroes\, to the Commissioner of Public Buildings\, to Presidents\, all the way to foiling would be assassins\, the stories and individuals associated with the founding and early days of the USCP are more than worthy of note. \nJohn Quincy Adams (LOC) \nMay is Law Enforcement Appreciation Month and we hope that you will join us on Saturday\, May 13\, 1:00 PM-2:30 PM to commemorate the origins of the Capitol Police at our 2nd Cemetery Speaker Series of 2023. And in our nation’s capital\, politicians\, bootleggers\, activists\, government officials\, cooks\, servants\, and everyone else in between all lived side by side\, helping texture the stories from the past we tell today. \nOne of these individuals was James “Jimmy” LaFontaine. Known as the “Gentleman Gambler\,” he owned and operated one of the largest and most profitable casinos of the era\, the Maryland Athletic Club. And at Congressional Cemetery\, Jimmy\, along with a selection of other interred residents\, are returning for a special event. Where is Jimmy? Who else is returning with him? What is the password to access his Maryland Athletic Club? Is Jimmy one of the notorious bootleggers supplying illicit spirits to the halls of Congress and beyond? These questions and more will all be answered at Gentleman’s Gambit: A Prohibition Era Mystery. \nGentleman’s Gambit is an interactive immersive outdoor theater experience in which visitors will be tasked with finding 6 actors playing interred residents across the cemetery grounds. Once they find them all\, they will be granted an audience with Jimmy LaFontaine himself to once and for all solve the Gentleman’s Gambit. \nThe event also features cocktails at our Speakeasy Bar\, live period appropriate music playing throughout the evening\, and more thematic fun. The event is rain or shine. Timed entry tickets are from 4:00 PM-7:45 PM in 15 minute increments. Last call at the bar is at 9:00 PM and all visitors will be asked to leave at 9:15 PM. \nTo purchase tickets\, please click the link HERE!\n \nInstructions:\nHeld on the evenings of May 19 and 20\, visitors will meet their instructor near the Gatehouse of the cemetery at preset start times (see ticket times on checkout) and will be presented with instructions and a Bootlegger’s Adviser mystery document\, containing a map\, helpful hints\, and spaces to write answers. Participants will use the Bootlegger’s Adviser\, hints from various costumed actors\, and of course their own instincts to find actors throughout the cemetery. \nAfter finding an actor in the cemetery and hearing their story\, participants are provided with a letter of a password to access the Maryland Athletic Club. Once they have all the letters and know the full password\, participants may proceed to the final stop to meet Jimmy himself at the Maryland Athletic Club. A complimentary prize is included! \n \nTo ensure every participant is able to enjoy the event\, we ask that you please try to complete the challenge in no more than 1 hour and 15 minutes. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on April 15th \, 158 years after Lincoln’s death\, from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM for a special event.
