SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair for the dates you will be joining us. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE\n2025 Facilitators: \n2/6/25   Lisa Malear \n3/6/25   Laura Lyster-Mensh \n4/3/25   Dixie Marroquin \n5/1/25   Caitlin Cronin \n6/5/25   Patricia Dubroof \n7/3/25   Diane Ullius \n8/7/25  Veronica Mosqueda \n9/4/25   AJ Orlikoff \n10/2/25   Kurt Deion \n11/6/25   Sam Stebbins \n12/4/25   Sarah Miller

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15th\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 19th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent-led tour\, this second entry in our 2025 Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Alexandria Wood\, followed by a complimentary docent-led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal. \n\nTo learn more about our partner\, Ford’s Theatre\, please click HERE.\nWant to rock Cemetery Speaker series merchandise\, including shirts\, hoodies\, and more?\nClick HERE to go to our online store page!\nYou may purchase tickets below.

SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 8 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 28th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nFamilies in the community who have suffered the loss of sons and daughters of any age deserve our attention and caring. At our cemetery we know the importance of remembering\, honoring\, and speaking the names of those we have lost. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. On the 2nd Sunday of December\, families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us outside the gates of the cemetery to show families they are not alone\, and that their loss is seen and heard and matters to us. Come gather at 7pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nCome support families remembering their loved ones of every age. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery and creating an enormous collective wind chime on the cemetery fence together. We invite you to bring a wind chime or things that sparkle or shine to hang on the cemetery gate during the ceremony to add a beautiful sound to the candlelight on the grounds during the ceremony. (see a video of the 2023 wind chime.) \nThe DC Chapter of Compassionate Friends will be leading the ceremony and the public is welcome. If you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nPlease CLICK HERE to let us know you plan to join us for this ceremony. \nIf you have questions or want to volunteer\, email us at this link.

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Jewish Americans
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC has always been a place of diversity. Ever since the city’s founding in 1790\, thousands of different people have lived\, worked\, and died alongside each other. And while Washingtonians have not always lived harmoniously with each other\, they have contributed to create a community. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \n \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nIn honor of Jewish American Heritage Month\, we invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on May 19\, 2024\, 1:00 PM-2:30PM for a special event. Historic Congressional Cemetery is pleased to welcome Jonathan Edelman from the Lilian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum as a Speaker Series guest. Following his keynote remarks\, he will join with docent Charles Walton to lead a thematic tour of Jewish American gravesites and monuments. Come along as they walk the grounds and retell the stories of the Jewish Americans laid to rest here\, including Thomas Lantos\, Ruth Rappaport\, and Martin Sloane. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. \nTo learn more about our partner\, the Capital Jewish Museum\, please click HERE.\n \nYou may reserve your spot below.

The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on April 14th \, 159 years after Lincoln’s death\, from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent led tour\, the inaugural event in our Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Blake Lindsey followed by a complimentary docent led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. \nRefreshments and alcoholic beverages will be for sale near the speaking area. \nThe event is rain or shine.
SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 10 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 27th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nNOTE! Despite the rain we ARE STILL HOLDING THE CEREMONY. Come in the front gate and follow the lighted path to the chapel where we will be warm and dry together. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. Families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us IN THE CHAPEL of Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E St SE in Washington\, DC from 7pm to 8pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nIf you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery with images of candles and inviting the public to add the names of people’s children lost\, at any age\, recent or long ago. If you cannot attend in person we invite you to send the name of your person for us to add to the exhibit. For two months\, the installation will draw attention to the losses and the resilience of families. \nWe also invite you to bring a wind chime to hang on the cemetery gate during the ceremony to add a beautiful sound to the candle light on the grounds during the ceremony. \nThe DC Chapter of Compassionate Friends will be leading the ceremony and the public is welcome. \nPlease CLICK HERE to let us know you plan to join us for this ceremony. \nIf you have questions or want to volunteer\, email us at this link.

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Infectious Disease in World History
DESCRIPTION:As long as human beings have existed\, so too have infectious diseases. These invisible foes of humanity have proliferated and thrived across history\, claiming the lives of untold billions across human history. \nThe Covid-19 Pandemic illustrated to people living today the all too real prevalence of infectious diseases on human societies\, but this relevance is not a new phenomenon. Indeed\, over 100 years ago the 1918 Influenza Pandemic devasted the United States and the world. From September to December 1918 alone\, over 250\,000 people died in the United States from the deadly disease. The  influence of diseases on history are visible across the 35 acres of the cemetery in the form of the various graves and memorials left behind by their victims. \nTo explore the influence of disease on history\, please join us this November for a Cemetery Speaker series event\, with a presentation from a local historian coupled with a thematic tour of the grounds from one of our docents. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal. \nTo purchase tickets\, click the link HERE.\nWant to rock Cemetery Speaker series merchandise\, including shirts\, hoodies\, and more?\nClick HERE to go to our online store page!\n

SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club November (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The harrowing true survival story of an early polar expedition that went terribly awry–with the ship frozen in ice and the crew trapped inside for the entire sunless\, Antarctic winter–in the tradition of David Grann\, Nathaniel Philbrick\, and Hampton Sides \nIn August 1897\, thirty-one-year-old commandant Adrien de Gerlache set sail aboard the Belgica\, fueled by a profound sense of adventure and dreams of claiming glory for his native Belgium. His destination was the uncharted end of the earth: the icy continent of Antarctica. But the commandant’s plans for a three-year expedition to reach the magnetic South Pole would be thwarted at each turn. Before the ship cleared South America\, it had already broken down\, run aground\, and lost several key crew members\, leaving behind a group with dubious experience for such an ambitious voyage… \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Tombs & Tomes Book Club September (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:For the virtual meeting\, we ask that you include a sense of macabre fun! This very special meeting will commemorate Tombs and Tomes’ 10th birthday. \nBeloved\, best-selling science writer Mary Roach’s “acutely entertaining\, morbidly fascinating” (Susan Adams\, Forbes) classic\, now with a new epilogue. \nFor two thousand years\, cadavers—some willingly\, some unwittingly—have been involved in science’s boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They’ve tested France’s first guillotines\, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle\, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin\, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure\, from heart transplants to gender confirmation surgery\, cadavers have helped make history in their quiet way. “Delightful—though never disrespectful” (Les Simpson\, Time Out New York)\, Stiff investigates the strange lives of our bodies postmortem and answers the question: What should we do after we die? \nStill interested?
