To explore LGBTQ+ history and gay legacy in the nation’s capital\, we hope that you will join us for this LGBTQ History Month edition of our LGBTQ+ tour. Find out who is buried here\, including many LGBTQ+ activists\, and learn about DC’s role in shaping the contours of the gay rights movement.\n\nFrom the GLAAD website: “Founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson\, a gay history teacher from rural Missouri\, LGBTQ History Month was declared a national history month by President Barack Obama in 2009. This celebration coincides with National Coming Out Day (October 11) and commemorates the first and second marches on Washington for LGBTQ rights in 1979 and 1987.”\n\nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in D.C. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15th\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 19th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent-led tour\, this second entry in our 2025 Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Alexandria Wood\, followed by a complimentary docent-led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:Registration opens on February 11! \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 9:00 AM inside the cemetery. Registration begins at 7:30 AM in the Chapel.\n \nCost: $35 for the race ($30 early bird pricing for all reservations prior to February 25!) \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \nThe Course: \nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards: \nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. \nDogs:  \nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race: \nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. SUMMARY:Worldwide Candle Lighting (with The Compassionate Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 8 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 28th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nFamilies in the community who have suffered the loss of sons and daughters of any age deserve our attention and caring. At our cemetery we know the importance of remembering\, honoring\, and speaking the names of those we have lost. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. On the 2nd Sunday of December\, families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us outside the gates of the cemetery to show families they are not alone\, and that their loss is seen and heard and matters to us. Come gather at 7pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nCome support families remembering their loved ones of every age. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery and creating an enormous collective wind chime on the cemetery fence together. We invite you to bring a wind chime or things that sparkle or shine to hang on the cemetery gate during the ceremony to add a beautiful sound to the candlelight on the grounds during the ceremony. (see a video of the 2023 wind chime.) \nThe DC Chapter of Compassionate Friends will be leading the ceremony and the public is welcome.
