Get your tickets today—this is a rare opportunity to spend an evening of live entertainment in one of DC’s historic\, revered landmarks. \nDoors Open at 7:00 PM in the HCC Chapel. \nOUR COMICS!\n Stacey Axler:\nStacey Axler has been performing regularly since 2021\, at shows and clubs throughout DC and\nMaryland. Stacey has performed in comedy festivals such as the North Carolina Comedy\nFestival\, Solocom in NYC and the Sixth City Comedy Festival. Stacey also hosts a monthly\nstandup show. \nJoey Friedman:\nJoey began performing at her parent’s dinner table in Monsey\, NY. As a cancer survivor\, she has\nnothing to fear and delivers jokes with an unshakable frankness. She can be found regularly\nhosting and featuring at the DC Improv for acts such as Louis Katz\, Brad Williams\, Emily Catalano\nand AdamRay. Most recently\, she featured in Ari Shaffir’s upcoming special. Every year\, she\nco-produces alongside Improbable Comedy and Cyrus Chansler\, a special fundraiser stand up\nshow\, Sense of Tumor\, featuring all survivors\, thrivers and caregivers. \nRebecka Green:\nRebecka Green moved to DC in 2021 from rural Iowa with the public intention of wanting a big\ncity moment\, and with the quiet intention of pursuing standup comedy. As the Midwest-grown\ndaughter of a Swedish computer scientist and a religion professor\, her on-stage presence is a\ncombination of disarming Midwestern and dry Scandinavian humor\, and her comedy focuses on\nall things family\, religion\, city life (rats)\, and pop culture. She appears on some of the city’s\nbest-known stages\, such as the DC Improv\, Hotbed\, and Room 808. \nPatty Mata:\nPatty is a DC based comic\, originally from Canada\, who has hosted at the Arlington Drafthouse\nfor Adam Conover\, Dulce Sloan and Matt Friendly. When Patty isn’t doing comedy\, she is a local\nsocial worker who is desperately trying not to get deported. She enjoys poking fun at the state\nof the country’s affairs and will accept maple syrup as a tradable good. \nTre Solo:\nTre’ grew up a military brat by way of Atlanta and Beaumont Texas. Tre started doing stand-up\ncomedy after being in the Navy. His material consists of stories from the military\, living around\nthe world\, and being raised by an uncanny southern family. Tre’ makes the audience laugh by\nmaking seemingly outrageous life experiences relatable to the audience. \nWinston Hodges:\nWinston Hodges is from Washington DC by way of Virginia. He’s toured all over the east coast\nshowcasing his southern charm and edgy wit. He’s been featured on Don’t Tell Comedy Secret\nSets\, and his videos have been viewed over a combined 20 million times online. He hosts the\nDog Namepodcast\, and his award winning special Grieving Productively is available on YouTube\nand his label debut album Already Aware is available on Apple/Spotify/Amazon. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. The words themselves seemingly resonate in our collective consciousness\, conjuring images of the silhouettes of misbegotten characters\, toting shovels\, sneaking into a cemetery on a dark night\, intent on their grisly work. While this cliche vignette might seem amusing\, is it true? Or does it obscure an equally macabre but far more true reality? What happens when someone’s remains are raised from the grave? How was it done in the past? Does it still happen today? And if so\, is it even legal? \nTo answer these questions and more\, we hope that you will join us for a very special October edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series to learn\, in a nutshell\, the ins and outs of disinterments\, exhumations\, and grave robbing. \nMark S. Zaid\, a Washington\, D.C. based attorney and legal expert\, will be providing an overview presentation of human exhumations and grave robbing\, drawing from his own experiences throughout his career. After his remarks\, one of our docents will lead attendees on a thematic walking tour of the cemetery grounds related to the cemetery’s history with all types of exhumations\, including the theft of an Attorney General’s skull\, moving a Vice President’s body\, the mass exhumation of Chinese migrants\, and more. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on October 6 at 1:00 PM. DESCRIPTION:Start Time: The 5K begins at 5:30 pm. Registration and packet pickup opens at 4:00 PM. \nCost: $35 for the race \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nThe Course:\nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards:\nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest. \nShirts:\nWant to dress for the occasion with some Dead Man’s Run swag? You are in luck! You may purchase an official race shirt using the link here. \nDogs:\nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race:\nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRegistration:\nThere is no pre-race packet pickup. All bib pickup will occur prior to the race in our chapel. Bib pickup begins at 4:00 PM in the Chapel. \nCostume Contest:\nDressing for the occasion? In addition to prizes for the top finishers\, a panel of judges will award prizes to the top individual and team costumes. Entry into the contest is on race day only. The cemetery will remain open to the public and dog walkers. \nJust Walk is a worker-owned business providing dog walking services in Washington D.C. We have been photographing our pet pals since 2011. Discover how their legacies endure in our collective memory. Encounter those shrouded in the past\, brought vividly to life by our talented actors\, and witness them as they tell their stories. Join us for Soul Strolls 2024: Scandal and Slander. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 18-19 and October 25-26. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. What are their stories? \nThis fall\, we invite you to uncover tales of scandal from the residents of Congressional Cemetery—a macabre glimpse into D.C.’s notorious past. Discover how their legacies endure in our collective memory. Encounter those shrouded in the past\, brought vividly to life by our talented actors\, and witness them as they tell their stories. Join us for Soul Strolls 2024: Scandal and Slander. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 18-19 and October 25-26. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 18\, Oct 25) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 19\, Oct 26). Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Many of the interred residents at Congressional Cemetery unfortunately endured traumatic and unfortunate deaths. Murders\, suicides\, executions\, and accidents are just some of the catastrophes which marked the ends of some of those buried at the cemetery. Individuals from David Herold\, an infamous Lincoln assassination conspirator\, to the Reed family\, tragically killed in a steamboat accident\, are all covered on the tour. To learn more about the stories of their untimely demises\, please join one of our docents for a specialty tour of the cemetery grounds which highlights these unfortunate episodes. \nTickets are $5 per person. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged. Every other Saturday\, barring major event programming\, we will have M&M Writing Group meet in the gatehouse at 10 AM for two hours of support\, accountability\, and dedictated time to hone your writing craft.
