Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. SUMMARY:Big Chair gathering: meet the artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we gather to introduce the newest Message of Hope painting on the cemetery’s famous Big Chair. \nThis informal gathering at 2:30pm on May 3 outside the cemetery gates will introduce the painter of this installation and recent artists\, as well as allow us to honor a recent Big Chair artist who died last month. \nAll are welcome. Come meet the artist\, Elizabeth Marik\, and previous artist\, Heather\, who painted the chair with her son\, Aiden\, who died in last month. \n\n\nFrom the sign on the chair: \nThis spring\, for the season following the vernal equinox\, our Big Chair painter is the artist Elizabeth Marik. The spring chair design includes flowers associated with death and mourning such as marigolds\, daisies\, lilies\, and a white rose. \n\n\n“Together\, they remind us of life emerging. The watery seat invokes the Ganges\, and doorways to the afterlife such as the river Styx\,” Marik said. \n\n\nMarik’s design was previously featured in the second Message of Hope installation in December 2023 along with two other painters\, Michele L.\, and Evelyn M. The candles they depicted were in honor of the annual Worldwide Compassionate Friends Candle Lighting Ceremony and included their motto: “We Need Not Walk Alone.” Compassionate Friends supports families who have lost children of any age. \n\n\nThe first Message of Hope was painted by Heather and Aiden in the fall of 2023 and featured a lighthouse in honor of suicide awareness after they lost a close relative to suicide. This month we join in honoring and remembering Aiden\, who recently died of suicide. In his honor\, the chair now features Aiden’s drawing of Godzilla which he drew for a tattoo he wore. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Mother’s Day\, this tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of May 19th\, her death day\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at an atmospheric National Historic Landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset (for this film\, gates will open at 7:30 and the film will begin between 8:30-8:45). Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine. SUMMARY:Plot Twist: Yoga in the Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:This Vinyasa yoga class will be accessible to yogis of all levels! We will move through postures\, coordinated with and guided by deliberate breath. The Vinyasa practice is a moving meditation that helps create strength\, freedom and fluidity in the body and mind! \nParticipants should check in with the instructor and gather at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. Your instructor will lead the students to the location for class. If you arrive after 11 AM you will miss the group heading to the practice location. The class is BYOM (bring your own mat)! \nHistoric Congressional Cemetery is our host for the events. Pursuing a non-profit mission of community engagement\, historic preservation\, education\, and environmental stewardship\, Congressional Cemetery prides itself as a place where the community can come together to celebrate life.
