DESCRIPTION:Historic Congressional Cemetery is thrilled to announce a new\, temporary public art installation by artist Tommy Bobo\, The Landscape Listens. Please join us for the opening reception with the artist\, curator\, and cemetery staff on Thursday\, March 28th\, 6-8pm. \nThe installation will be on view to the public March 28-June 30\, 2024 at the end of our 9/11 Memorial Trail\, just past the Totem Poles. \nThe event is free to attend and reservations are not required. If you plan to attend\, we request that you please RSVP below. \nAbout the Installation\nAligning with the peak blooms of Congressional’s three dozen cherry blossom trees\, Washington D.C.-based artist Tommy Bobo\, in conjunction with Congressional Cemetery\, will present a site-specific sculptural installation at a memorial site located in the historic acreage of the cemetery in the style of a ‘wind phone’. \nA wind phone\, or a kaze no denwa (風の電話 )\, is a type of art installation originally conceived of by Itaru Sasaki in his garden in Otsuchi\, Japan. It offers a point of connection to speak to those dwelling in otherworldly planes\, creating a space for mourning and remembrance. \nIn The Landscape Listens\, a small meadow of discrete mirrored sculptures will float inches off the ground and veil the cemetery’s landscape. Each element is designed to kinetically respond to air currents in the environment. The reflective pools of Bobo’s installation act as a vehicle to carry remembrances across the wind\, ferrying the words spoken into the wind phone to people beyond. The Landscape Listens is curated by Ashley Molese\, Historic Congressional Cemetery’s inaugural Curator-in-Residence.

Registration begins at 7:30 AM in the Chapel.\n \nCost: $35 for the race ($30 early bird pricing for all reservations prior to February 26!) \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \nThe Course: \nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on April 14th \, 159 years after Lincoln’s death\, from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent led tour\, the inaugural event in our Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Blake Lindsey followed by a complimentary docent led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. SUMMARY:Big Chair gathering: meet the artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we gather to introduce the newest Message of Hope painting on the cemetery’s famous Big Chair. \nThis informal gathering at 2:30pm on May 3 outside the cemetery gates will introduce the painter of this installation and recent artists\, as well as allow us to honor a recent Big Chair artist who died last month. \nAll are welcome. Come meet the artist\, Elizabeth Marik\, and previous artist\, Heather\, who painted the chair with her son\, Aiden\, who died in last month. \n\n\nFrom the sign on the chair: \nThis spring\, for the season following the vernal equinox\, our Big Chair painter is the artist Elizabeth Marik. The spring chair design includes flowers associated with death and mourning such as marigolds\, daisies\, lilies\, and a white rose. \n\n\n“Together\, they remind us of life emerging. The watery seat invokes the Ganges\, and doorways to the afterlife such as the river Styx\,” Marik said. \n\n\nMarik’s design was previously featured in the second Message of Hope installation in December 2023 along with two other painters\, Michele L.\, and Evelyn M. The candles they depicted were in honor of the annual Worldwide Compassionate Friends Candle Lighting Ceremony and included their motto: “We Need Not Walk Alone.” Compassionate Friends supports families who have lost children of any age. \n\n\nThe first Message of Hope was painted by Heather and Aiden in the fall of 2023 and featured a lighthouse in honor of suicide awareness after they lost a close relative to suicide. This month we join in honoring and remembering Aiden\, who recently died of suicide. In his honor\, the chair now features Aiden’s drawing of Godzilla which he drew for a tattoo he wore. The messages of both Messages of Hope on the Big Chair now become entwined as part of the history of this cemetery. \n\n\nFor more information about our Messages of Hope please inquire in the gatehouse or email: DeathDoula@congressionalcemetery.org \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n
