This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths. So we’ve asked Laura G. to join us to talk about yoga and breathing and the role and meaning of the corpse pose. Laura will lead us in a bit of “chair yoga” as well. \nLaura “Narayani” Gubisch is a long time hatha yoga teacher focused on the practice of relaxation\, or corpse pose\, and absolutely loves teaching this pose (and many others) under the beautiful trees at the cemetery! \nAnd to think that Laura the Death Doula just thought of that part of yoga class as “the nap.” \nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:As an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death. But just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement facilitating thoughts and discussion about the often taboo subject of death\, It’s a intimate informal gathering to discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea. There is no agenda other than providing a safe space to have an open ended conversation. \nPlease join us for Historic Congressional Cemetery Death Cafes on October 10 from 6:00 PM- 7:30 PM in our historic chapel. Tickets are free and are available for reservation approximately one month prior to the event date on September 12. \nWe will have a rotating slate of individuals from the local death positive community to moderate the event. Complimentary refreshments will be served but we ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share with the group. A $5 donation\, to help cover event costs\, is also welcome but not required. In addition\, you do not have to use your real name to register\, just a name you will recognize so we can check you in at the door. The race starts with a toll of the funeral bell and continues throughout the Cemetery and onto the Anacostia Trail for a ghostly evening run full of spooky music and other fun! \nCostumes are encouraged\, with prizes for best individual costume and best team costume! Form a team to compete with your friends – and we love to see creative team names. A panel of judges will select the winner. \nAll proceeds from Congressional Cemetery events\, including Dead Man’s Run\, help support our 501(c)(3) organization and fund the preservation of this National Historic Landmark” \nRegister here! Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). DESCRIPTION:Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of October 24\, her birthday\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. This new signage will celebrate Lockwood’s self made origins as a Western New York native.  A short cupcake reception will follow at The Lockwood. \nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP HERE.  \nSpecial thanks to Royalton-Hartland Central School Class of 1972 for their generous donation of the new signage and to the people of Middleport\, NY for honoring one of their own. \n

And while these tragedies influenced the course of their lives\, it didn’t define them. Rather\, it was the triumph over the tragedy\, the beauty in the sorrow\, that did. \nAcross 4 evenings this October\, discover a selection of tragic tales of Congressional Cemetery’s residents. Learn how they are alive today in our memory. Encounter them\, and their stories\, brought back to life by our talented actors.  Bear witness to their legacies. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \n \nVIP Tours:\nWe offer exclusive VIP tours as a part of Soul Strolls! On Fridays\, the 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM are exclusively VIP. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 65\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their story is our story and many of them lived noteworthy and extraordinary lives. Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths. DESCRIPTION:Boneyard Bootcamp\nSaturday at 1pm – September 23rd through October 28th\, 2023. FREE! \nStay ahead of the grim reaper ! Come ready to sweat and leave in spooktacular good shape with trainer Darius. And you won’t be walking like Frankenstein after the flexibility exercises that you’ll do! Each hour long class will provide a full-body workout combining cardiovascular exercise with strength training. Please bring a mat and your water bottle. All other equipment will be provided. All fitness levels are welcome! Classes are free but advanced registration is required. Space is limited to 20 people per class. Boneyard Bootcamp meets rain or shine in Congressional Cemetery. \nMeet your trainer: Darius Singpurwalla is a Capitol Hill resident who has taught boot camp style fitness courses in Washington DC for the past several years. He has lived on the hill since 2019 with his wife and dog\, Wallace. SUMMARY:Murder and Mayhem: Tragic Deaths at Congressional Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Many of the interred residents at Congressional Cemetery unfortunately endured traumatic and unfortunate deaths. Murders\, suicides\, executions\, and accidents are just some of the catastrophes which marked the ends of some of those buried at the cemetery. Individuals from David Herold\, an infamous Lincoln assassination conspirator\, to the Reed family\, tragically killed in a steam boat accident\, are all covered on the tour. To learn more about the stories of their untimely demises\, please join one of our docents for a specialty tour of the cemetery grounds which highlights these unfortunate episodes. \nTickets are $5 per person. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged.
