Originally a 1960s vampire soap opera of the same name\,  Johnny Depp jumped at the chance to star in the lead role in the remake of one of his childhood favorites. With the persuasive powers of a vampire himself\, Depp even convinced his longtime friend and collaborator Tim Burton to direct this quirky fish out of water re-imagining of the 60s classic. We hope that you will join us for the conclusion of the Summer of Surreal and please\, bring plenty of steak to ward off any vampires who might be among the attendees. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Sept. 9\, we are very pleased to present the award-winning feature documentary JACK HAS A PLAN. We saw the amazing and funny film at this year’s DC Independent Film Festival\, where it won the “Best of the Fest” award. The filmmaker\, Bradley Berman\, generously gave us permission for a single screening at Congressional. \nWhen Jack Tuller\, a man with a terminal brain tumor for 25 years\, decides to end his life\, his family and friends struggle to accept his decision. Berman\, Jack’s best friend\, documents his three-year quest to die a happy man\, culminating in a permanent going-away party. The San Francisco Examiner said: “It’s as joyous\, thrilling and funny as any film about death could be.”\n\n\nThe film is\, first and foremost\, a great story about one person’s journey. But it’s also a rich exploration of death with dignity\, end-of-life wishes\, and the idea of a good death. \nWe will begin at 10 am with showing the film which will leave us some time for processing and discussion. This film’s characters show a range of beliefs and concerns that will probably be reflected among us watching the film. We will take on the challenge of talking about issues which may be controversial or emotional with curiosity and courage\, and mutual respect.\n\nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Experience Congressional Cemetery through Mindfulness\nImmerse yourself in the natural and cultural features of Congressional Cemetery through an outdoor mindfulness tour. Outdoor mindfulness is akin to Shinrin-yoku\, or forest bathing\, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind\, promotes well-being\, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The session begins with warm-ups\, centering\, and breathing exercises. These are followed by a non-strenuous walk\, and an extended sit. We will slow down\, be curious\, and take time to connect with the natural and historic place that is Congressional Cemetery. Mindfulness Among the Monuments is lead by Susan West Montgomery. Susan is a certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide providing outdoor mindfulness excursions in the Washington DC region and beyond. She specializes in developing customized excursions at historic and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome. In the event of inclement weather\, the book signing will take place in the chapel. \nAbout the book:\nObject Lessons is a series of short\, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. \nGrave takes a ground-level view of how burial sites have transformed over time and how they continue to change. As a cemetery tour guide\, Allison C. Meier has spent more time walking among tombstones than most. Even for her\, the grave has largely been invisible\, an out of the way and unobtrusive marker of death. However\, graves turn out to be not always so subtle\, reverent\, or permanent. \nWhile the indigent and unidentified have frequently been interred in mass graves\, a fate brought into the public eye during the COVID-19 pandemic\, the practice today is not unlike burials in the potter’s fields of the colonial era. Burial is not the only option\, of course\, and Meier analyzes the rise of cremation\, green burial\, and new practices like human composting\, investigating what is next for the grave and how existing spaces of death can be returned to community life. \nObject Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic. \nAbout the author:\n \nAllison C. During our “Bucket List” session a few months ago it came up that so many of us have a lot of “aspirational” art and craft supplies. We buy them with good intentions but don’t use them\, and they haunt us and taunt us. \nSo\, we’re inviting you to grab those unused marker sets\, glitter pens\, glue guns and watercolors and bring them down. Not to make great art\, though. We’re going to make some bad art and have good fun doing it. We’re going to let go of the projects that are taking up space in our closets and causing us regret. We’ll make stuff for a few hours and then swap items freely: bring some\, take some others home\, and with our newfound creativity and freedom not to do things expertly we will give these items new life. \nBeing death positive is about living fully. Let’s not let our artsy crafty impulses cramp our style! \nPLEASE BRING your unused ART SUPPLIES\, CRAFT SUPPLIES\, interesting objects\, sparkly things\, gewgaws and gimcracks. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 65\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their story is our story and many of them lived noteworthy and extraordinary lives. Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm (and in the summer 10:30 AM to beat the heat)\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths. DESCRIPTION:Special Olympics DC is hosting their Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) on Friday\, October 6 at the Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nFor over 30 years\, Special Olympics DC has partnered with local law enforcement for the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run. \nThe 5K Race raises awareness and funds for the more than 2\,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities who can benefit from the programs Special Olympics DC has to offer. \nThis is a CERTIFIED 5K course and anyone can participate! \nPlease join us for the 5K Run/Walk on Friday\, October 6th. Cianna is on a mission to help us be kind to those we leave behind. She knows from experience why this is so important. DESCRIPTION:Join docent Jeffrey Rollins for an LGBTQ+ tour of Historic Congressional Cemetery. HCC is one of the only known cemeteries in the world with a dedicated LGBTQ+ section. Find out who is buried here\, including many of the founders of the modern Gay rights movement\, and learn about DC’s role in the history of the LGBTQ rights movement! \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. The Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. Meet by the gatehouse at the cemetery entrance. \nReservations are required. You do not have to bring the ticket with you.
