Indeed\, few heroes have the name recognition of Batman\, one of the most beloved and iconic superheroes of all time. And while Batman has a storied and celebrated history\, it was Tim Burton who first introduced most audiences to his exploits with his 1989 smash hit blockbuster. Starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader and Jake Nicholson stealing the show as the Clown Prince of Crime\, the Joker\, Burton’s Batman introduced audiences to a dark and surrealist vision of Gotham and helped popularize superheroes for a new generation. We hope that you will join us and remember to put a SMILE on your face. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. But just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement facilitating thoughts and discussion about the often taboo subject of death\, It’s a intimate informal gathering to discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea. There is no agenda other than providing a safe space to have an open ended conversation. \nPlease join us for Historic Congressional Cemetery Death Cafes on August 8 from 6:00 PM- 7:30 PM in our historic chapel. Tickets are free and are available for reservation approximately one month prior to the event date on July 11. \nWe will have a rotating slate of individuals from the local death positive community to moderate the event. Complimentary refreshments will be served but we ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share with the group. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Fear of death (or is it fear of dying?) \nIt is very common in modern times to avoid talking or thinking about death\, even while we are all likely to live longer than our ancestors. Death is a topic that is avoided with dread\, fear\, even anger. Death positivity is the idea that death is a normal and expected part of living\, and that talking about dying and death openly makes it easier to live authentically and fully. \nThere are costs to avoiding the topic. A lack of preparation can make the end of life unnecessarily chaotic and challenging. Relationships are strained when issues are not resolved or acknowledged. Health issues may not be addressed for fear of “the worst.” \nFear of death also causes those who are elderly\, ill\, or dying to be avoided as well. \nIt takes courage and curiosity to talk openly about death\, but it may be easier with practice. Accepting our mortality can lead to less avoidance and even more freedom to live fully in the time we have. \nThis Death Doula Day we’ll talk about the topic of death phobia\, death anxiety\, fear of death. Some of us have very little of this\, and some of us are impaired by it all the time. We won’t be able to fix the problem for one another but we can bring our fear into the open. \nBring your ideas and tools and strategies to share. There is so much wisdom in the world around this natural fear: let’s explore some of that together! \n\nThis topic will be about fear around our own deaths\, rather than grief or fear of the deaths of others. Sometimes these intertwine\, but mostly we’ll focus on our individual fears around our own mortality.\nThis conversation is informal and not professional psychotherapy. These topics and anxiety around death are marvelous subjects to explore professionally with trained psychotherapists. Sometimes called the “2nd War for Independence” the conflict saw the fledgling Americans squaring off with the British once again. Across the continent and on the high seas\, Americans fought under the Stars and Stripes for their country. We saw the amazing and funny film at this year’s DC Independent Film Festival\, where it won the “Best of the Fest” award. The filmmaker\, Bradley Berman\, generously gave us permission for a single screening at Congressional. \nWhen Jack Tuller\, a man with a terminal brain tumor for 25 years\, decides to end his life\, his family and friends struggle to accept his decision. Berman\, Jack’s best friend\, documents his three-year quest to die a happy man\, culminating in a permanent going-away party. The San Francisco Examiner said: “It’s as joyous\, thrilling and funny as any film about death could be.”\n\n\nThe film is\, first and foremost\, a great story about one person’s journey. But it’s also a rich exploration of death with dignity\, end-of-life wishes\, and the idea of a good death. \nWe will begin at 10 am with showing the film which will leave us some time for processing and discussion. This film’s characters show a range of beliefs and concerns that will probably be reflected among us watching the film. We will take on the challenge of talking about issues which may be controversial or emotional with curiosity and courage\, and mutual respect.\n\nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Experience Congressional Cemetery through Mindfulness\nImmerse yourself in the natural and cultural features of Congressional Cemetery through an outdoor mindfulness tour. Outdoor mindfulness is akin to Shinrin-yoku\, or forest bathing\, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind\, promotes well-being\, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The session begins with warm-ups\, centering\, and breathing exercises. These are followed by a non-strenuous walk\, and an extended sit. We will slow down\, be curious\, and take time to connect with the natural and historic place that is Congressional Cemetery. Mindfulness Among the Monuments is lead by Susan West Montgomery. Susan is a certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide providing outdoor mindfulness excursions in the Washington DC region and beyond. She specializes in developing customized excursions at historic and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome. Stop by just outside the Gatehouse between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Saturday\, September 16 to pickup any honey you have purchased. Jackie Spainhour\, President\, will be handing out honey purchases alongside our Visitor Services Associate Lead Kennedy Simpson. \nNOTE: Honey is NOT for sale at this event. All purchases must be done through our online store. Honey will only be handed out to those who pre-purchased and are on the list.

And at Congressional Cemetery\, this rich history is on full display on the grounds in the form of the various gravestones\, memorials\, and other markers of Jewish interred resdients\, Come and explore the cemetery’s Jewish history with a guided tour from one of our exeprt docents to celebrate Rosh HaShanah! \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays\, 11:00-3:00. \nThe tour is rain or shine. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nReserve your tickets here!
