SUMMARY:Gentleman's Gambit: A Prohibition Era Mystery
DESCRIPTION:On January 17\, 1920\, the United States went dry. The 18th Amendment ushered in a new era in American history\, one characterized by booming business\, new fashions\, and immense cultural upheaval. And in our nation’s capital\, politicians\, bootleggers\, activists\, government officials\, cooks\, servants\, and everyone else in between all lived side by side\, helping texture the stories from the past we tell today. \nOne of these individuals was James “Jimmy” LaFontaine. Known as the “Gentleman Gambler\,” he owned and operated one of the largest and most profitable casinos of the era\, the Maryland Athletic Club. And at Congressional Cemetery\, Jimmy\, along with a selection of other interred residents\, are returning for a special event. Where is Jimmy? Who else is returning with him? What is the password to access his Maryland Athletic Club? Is Jimmy one of the notorious bootleggers supplying illicit spirits to the halls of Congress and beyond? These questions and more will all be answered at Gentleman’s Gambit: A Prohibition Era Mystery. \nGentleman’s Gambit is an interactive immersive outdoor theater experience in which visitors will be tasked with finding 6 actors playing interred residents across the cemetery grounds. Once they find them all\, they will be granted an audience with Jimmy LaFontaine himself to once and for all solve the Gentleman’s Gambit. \nThe event also features cocktails at our Speakeasy Bar\, live period appropriate music playing throughout the evening\, and more thematic fun. The event is rain or shine. Timed entry tickets are from 4:00 PM-7:45 PM in 15 minute increments. Last call at the bar is at 9:00 PM and all visitors will be asked to leave at 9:15 PM. \nTo purchase tickets\, please click the link HERE!\n \nInstructions:\nHeld on the evenings of May 19 and 20\, visitors will meet their instructor near the Gatehouse of the cemetery at preset start times (see ticket times on checkout) and will be presented with instructions and a Bootlegger’s Adviser mystery document\, containing a map\, helpful hints\, and spaces to write answers. Participants will use the Bootlegger’s Adviser\, hints from various costumed actors\, and of course their own instincts to find actors throughout the cemetery. \nAfter finding an actor in the cemetery and hearing their story\, participants are provided with a letter of a password to access the Maryland Athletic Club. Once they have all the letters and know the full password\, participants may proceed to the final stop to meet Jimmy himself at the Maryland Athletic Club. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century\, to Congressional Cemetery on Sunday\, May 21 at 1:00 PM. At Hoover’s graveside\, Gage will speak on the life and historical legacy of lifelong DC resident J. Edgar Hoover\, followed by a Q&A and a book signing with the author. Remarks will begin promptly at 1:00 PM and limited seating at the graveside is available on a first come\, first served basis. The event is rain or shine and beverages will be available for purchase. In addition\, complimentary docent led tours will be offered at the conclusion of the Q&A session. DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:On January 6\, 2021 the United States Capitol was assaulted by a group of protesters\, many of whom intended to disrupt the certification of the 2020 Presidential Election results. Vivid images from that day showed outnumbered United States Capitol Police Officers attempting to protect Congress members from harm. The events of January 6 illustrates the all important and central role of the Capitol Police to both the security of Congress members and American democracy. Yet\, the origins and early days of the Capitol Police are often not focused on. Indeed\, the story of the guardians of the U.S. Capitol begins in the early days of Washington DC and the American Republic. Every year in June\, the corner of  E Street &  Peterbug Matthews Way SE comes alive to celebrate the contribution of John “Peterbug” Matthews and the remembrance of Juneteenth. This year\, we add to our celebration the designation of the Peterbug Academy as a contributing landmark in Capitol Hill\, thanks to the preservation efforts of former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson who donated the land to the District where the Peterbug Academy now sits. We will be honoring her contribution with a planting ceremony in conjunction with the Lady Bird Johson’s Wildflower Center. \nYou can register for tickets here!\nFor more than 45 years Mr. Matthews and the Peterbug Academy has been an integral piece of the Capitol Hill community. His shoe repair academy has provided a much-needed service to his neighbors and an incomparable opportunity to make a difference in the lives of neighborhood children. Since 1977 he has been “saving soles and heeling people” while supporting the greenest form of all transportation – our feet! Kick off a celebration of Juneteenth weekend by walking\, jogging\, or running this 5K. Then hang around and walk in the Peterbug Day Parade as we move along E Street to Peterbug’s Shoe Academy to celebrate Peterbug’s birthday with food\, music\, and fellowship at the corner of Peterbug Matthews Way (13th St SE) & E St SE. The Fulcrum Foundation and the Peterbug Academy are proud to announce their partnership to help preserve the historic property located at 502 Peterbug Matthews Way St SE.

Barbara was a hospice nurse for decades and is now a docent and an adopt-a-plot volunteer at Congressional Cemetery. Come at 10am for the Q&A which will be for our first hour. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 65\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their story is our story and many of them lived noteworthy and extraordinary lives. Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm (and in the summer 10:30 AM to beat the heat)\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths.
