Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Then\, on Friday\, June 13th\, delight the whole family with the heartwarming chaos of Monsters\, Inc.. We’ll turn up the heat again on Friday\, August 29th with the sand-swept thrills of The Mummy\, and wrap up the season with paranormal perfection on Friday\, September 12th as Ghostbusters haunts the cemetery in style. Bring a blanket\, your bravest friends\, and settle in for a movie night like no other—where the stars shine bright and the dead don’t mind a little company.\n\nIn the event of rain\, the film will screen on the following Friday evening (please note the below rain dates\, May 30\, June 20\, September 3\, September 19).\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you.\n\nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset.\n\n\nRegister Below!\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n\nOur official pre-game location of choice is Duffy’s Irish Pub! SUMMARY:Nurses of War Tour\, with Melanie La Force
DESCRIPTION:Find out the true stories of the women who served as nurses in war – their yearning to help\, to change life\, to improve the situation of their sons\, fathers\, and uncles in the field of battle and how with courage and dedication they helped improve the lives of so many. On this tour we will look into the lives of these women and how they contributed to the suffragist movement. \n\nThe docent for this special topic tour is Melanie La Force\, an award -winning professional tourist guide in Washington\, DC. She brings a passion for the human side of history to the artistry of storytelling. She earned a BA in French language and teaching at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana. She studied Roman History at the Sorbonne in Paris and her love of art and archeology grew. With a Masters Degree in public policy from George Washington University she continued a dedicated career in the federal government. While working internationally for the EPA she saw how much she loved history and travel and earned a Masters in Curriculum Design and then turned to tourist guiding in DC. She developed her own Clara Barton tour and presented it with DC Walking Town and now is offering tours in the DC area. She is a French language tour guide and has developed her own company\, Bonjour La Force\, LLC\, offering tours in French and English in DC and the Baltimore area. \n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $10 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \n\nYou may reserve your ticket below or by using this link. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. DESCRIPTION:Cinematery is back at Historic Congressional Cemetery\, bringing classic monster related films to romp through the grounds with Mausoleums and Monsters! Celebrate summer on Friday\, July 11th with the iconic shark thriller Jaws—just when you thought it was safe to go back in the grass. Bring a blanket\, your bravest friends\, and settle in for a movie night like no other—where the stars shine bright and the dead don’t mind a little company.\n\nIn the event of rain\, the film will screen on the following Friday evening (July 18th.)\n\nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you.\n\n\n\nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset.\n\n\nRegister Below!\n\n\n\n \n\n  \n\n \n\n\n\nOur official pre-game location of choice is Duffy’s Irish Pub! DESCRIPTION:On January 28\, 1742\, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men\, barely alive\, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager\, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans\,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. The men\, after being marooned for months and facing starvation\, built the flimsy craft and sailed for more than a hundred days\, traversing nearly 3\,000 miles of storm-wracked seas. They were greeted as heroes. \nBut then . . . six months later\, another\, even more decrepit craft landed on the coast of Chile. This boat contained just three castaways\, and they told a very different story. The thirty sailors who landed in Brazil were not heroes – they were mutineers. The first group responded with countercharges of their own\, of a tyrannical and murderous senior officer and his henchmen. It became clear that while stranded on the island the crew had fallen into anarchy\, with warring factions fighting for dominion over the barren wilderness. As accusations of treachery and murder flew\, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. The stakes were life-and-death–for whomever the court found guilty could hang… \n
