Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This variation of our introductory tour highlights a selection of some of our notable residents\, many of whom were devoted to dogs and pets. You’ll learn about the origin of our celebrated K9 Corps and its vital role in the cemetery’s transformation from endangered historic site to national historic landmark.  True to its name\, the “Unleashed” tour goes for its walk when the grounds are open to members of our off-leash dog walking program. You may also bring your own furry friend on this tour if you are a K9 Corps Member or if you purchase a day pass in addition to your ticket. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nReservations are required. $10 donation per person. Batalá will lead a New Orleans-style procession along the half-mile path. \nIn honor of Arbor Day Weekend\, heritage trees and recently planted saplings by Casey Trees will be displayed with ribbons and festive placards that identify each woody species by their botanical and common names. \nLight refreshments to follow in the Chapel. \nThis event is FREE! \nDogs may attend but MUST BE ON LEASH. \nWARNING: This event will include heavy use of loud drums. \nRSVP HERE

These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. And while Washingtonians have not always lived harmoniously with each other\, they have contributed to create a community. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington D.C. remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington D.C.\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in D.C. With the global rise of antisemitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on Sunday\, May 18th at 1:00 PM. Docent Charles Walton will lead a thematic tour of Jewish American gravesites and monuments. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Seeking equal rights and protections from discrimination\, gay rights advocacy took on many forms of resistance\, including a symbol seen on graves at Congressional Cemetery\, the Pink Triangle. \nTo explore LGBTQ+ history and gay legacy in the nation’s capital\, we hope that you will join us for a very special WorldPride edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series with LGBTQ+ historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome. \nHe will explore the inspiring history of how generations of LGBTQ+ activists transformed the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge into a powerful call to action for LGBTQ+ pride\, justice\, and community. Drawing from unexplored archival sources and exclusive interviews\, Dr. Desai-Newsome will showcase the ways activists in the US and beyond used the pink triangle – and the history it represented – to fight against injustice in the present. Washington DC played a unique role in bringing together networks of activists and scholars in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. You’ll hear the stories and see the final resting place of some of the most influential advocates for LGBTQ+ equality in American history \n \nAfter the presentation\, Interim Executive Director A.J. Orlikoff will lead a thematic evening LGBTQ+ walking tour of the historic grounds. All proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length.
