Courtesy of New England Historical Society \nSign up here!\nIn his capacities as general\, president\, enslaver\, and farmer\, George Washington received support from many individuals who — compared to the nation’s first chief executive — are less remembered. One such person is Tobias Lear\, who in 1784 was recommended by General Benjamin Lincoln to serve as Washington’s executive secretary. Over the next 15 years\, Lear worked for Washington as an indispensable employee and became\, literally\, part of the Washington family. His relationship with Washington ended only with the general’s death in 1799\, which Lear witnessed and recorded in detail. Lear’s own demise in 1816 was followed by his burial in Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nFor this entry of the 2025 Speaker Series\, HCC is thrilled to welcome one of the country’s most sought-out presidential historians\, Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky\, to discuss Lear’s life and connection to George Washington. Dr. Chervinsky currently serves as the Executive Director of the George Washington Presidential Library. She is the author of the award-winning books\, The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution and Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic\, and co-editor of Mourning the Presidents: Loss and Legacy in American Culture. She regularly writes for public audiences in the Wall Street Journal\, The Bulwark\, Time Magazine\, USA Today\, CNN\, and the Washington Post. \nFollowing Dr. Chervinsky’s presentation\, come along on a docent-led tour to the grave of Tobias Lear\, as well as the final resting places of more of Washington’s contemporaries and other figures from the nation’s founding era. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. SUMMARY:Sunday Stroll Guided Introductory Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!

DESCRIPTION:Dead Man’s Run is Congressional Cemetery’s annual fall 5K fundraiser race! We hope that you will join us Sunday\, October 12 at 5:30 PM for the region’s most death defying and thematic 5k race. This bare bones run is the best way to stay ahead of your grave…by running among them! The race starts inside the cemetery and continues onto the Anacostia Trail for a ghostly evening run full of spooky music and other fun! \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 5:30 pm. \nCost (Includes T-shirt if ordered before September 22nd): \nEarly Bird [BEFORE August 1st]: $30 \nStandard: $40 \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nThe Course:\nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards:\nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest. \nShirts:\nWant to dress for the occasion with some Dead Man’s Run swag? You are in luck! You may purchase an official race shirt using the link here. \nDogs:\nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race:\nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRegistration:\nRegistration and packet pickup opens at 9:00 AM on October 11th at the Gatehouse and goes until 4:00 PM. October 12th\, opens 3:30 PM in the Chapel. \nCostume Contest:\nDressing for the occasion? In addition to prizes for the top finishers\, a panel of judges will award prizes to the top individual and team costumes. Entry into the contest is on race day only. Find our judges near the starting line\, fill out a small registration card\, and the judges will check out your costume. Be sure to arrive early to register to win! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race.

The closest metro station to Congressional Cemetery is Stadium Armory\, located on the Orange/Blue/Silver lines. Bikes may be locked just outside the cemetery gate. There is limited street parking\, but we advise visitors to closely read parking signs before finding a spot. \n  \nWhat to Know: \n\nPlease note that the Cemetery will remain open to off-leash dog walking during the performance.\nThere is no smoking permitted.\nPlease wear appropriate footwear as the Chapel is a brief walk from the front gate.\nThe performance runs 85 minutes with no intermission.\nNo onsite ticket sales (only advanced/online ticket sales).\nAdult content.\nPlease note that Congressional Cemetery is the venue for the event and not the host.
