DESCRIPTION:The United States was founded upon powerful ideals: freedom\, equality\, liberty\, and representative government. 250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence boldly declared the birth of a new age of freedom\, asserting that “All men are created equal.”\nYet\, the United States failed to be what it imagined itself to be. Enslavement persisted. Women were denied political and legal equality. Native nations were displaced and brutalized. People without wealth\, status\, or social power were routinely excluded from the country’s promises. \nOver time\, America’s true form emerged and it was shaped by Americans who refused to accept these inequities. Across generations\, activists\, agitators\, freedom seekers\, reformers\, and ordinary individuals pushed the nation closer to the ideals it claimed to represent. \nIn recognition and celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and brought to life by Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, Soul Strolls: Becoming America explores this contested space between ideals and reality. Through the stories of those who came before\, visitors will consider not only the values of America’s founding\, but how generations of people have embodied what America truly is. \nOur annual lantern-lit twilight tours bring the cemetery’s history to life through immersive performances by costumed interpreters. Journey through the grounds after dark\, encounter Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, and discover the lives and legacies that helped shape the nation. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive early before their scheduled tour to enjoy live music\, refreshments\, and the atmosphere of an October evening in the cemetery. We plan to have a food truck available each evening\, along with drinks and other refreshments for purchase. \nAttendee costumes are welcomed and encouraged! \n\nTickets available here!\nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over 6 nights\, October 16-17\, October 23-24\, and October 30-31. Hour-long tours depart every 10 minutes. The major change to Soul Strolls 2026 is our new tour queue system. When purchasing your ticket\, you will select a tour queue time. The time on your ticket is the time by which you must be checked in and standing in the tour queue. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to your tour queue time to enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Día de los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, and Death Doula-in-Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, community gathering\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \nDía de los Muertos is a tradition that honors loved ones who have passed\, celebrating the ongoing bond between the living and the dead. Millions in Mexico\, Latin America\, and beyond celebrate by creating colorful ofrendas (altars) with photos\, flowers\, food\, and mementos to welcome spirits back to the earthly world. Many also gather in cemeteries or at festivals to share music\, meals\, and remembrance in a joyful celebration of life. \nNow in its second year\, Congressional Cemetery’s Día de los Muertos celebration invites the public to join us on Sunday\, November 1st from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the historic chapel to collectively build a large-scale ofrenda honoring our departed loved ones. \n \nAs Rosa Moreno shares\, “Day of the Dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy”. \n \nEveryone is welcome to bring photos of departed loved ones\, some of their favorite foods\, mementos\, flowers (fresh or dried)\, and/or other cherished artifacts from their lives. You can also make something on-site during the event. We will have a variety of hands-on crafts and activities for all ages\, including decorating sugar skulls and crafting paper flowers. You can add your creations to the ofrenda during the event and take them home afterward as a keepsake.  In celebrating the people and things they loved\, we will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Día de los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and celebration. \n  \nAll are welcome to this all ages event. Accessibility information is detailed below about how to access the cemetery grounds. Visitors are encouraged to collect their items before departing the event; please note that items left behind will be respectfully recycled or donated following the event. \n  \nAre you joining us? Historic Congressional Chapel\, where the event will take place\, is roughly a 5-minute walk from our front gate. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. On this tour of approximately 90 minutes\, one of our trained docents will share with you the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \n\nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. This is a non-refundable donation.\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. Tours are rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nOur Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, facilitates our death cafes and represents the cemetery for these evenings with a range of guest co-facilitators from the community. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAt Congressional\, we remember our veterans. Over 1700 veterans from almost every major American armed conflict are interred in the historic grounds of Congressional Cemetery. And while they are no longer here\, their memories live on. To help honor and remember\, we invite you to join Congressional Cemetery and our community partners for the annual Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying Ceremony and event. \nThe ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM at Congressional Cemetery. Upon arrival\, attendees are directed to the ceremony area. At the conclusion of the ceremony (around 11:30 AM)\, attendees and volunteers will assist with the placing of wreaths at veteran graves. Attending the ceremony is free but we ask that you please RSVP using the link below. In addition\, chairs are provided for the ceremony and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \nPlease note that this an outdoor event with no rain date. We advise dressing for the elements. We also recommend wearing appropriate footwear\, as the ground is uneven across the cemetery. Due to our status as a National Historic Landmark\, we are unable to be ADA compliant. \nWreaths Across America is a US-based Non-Profit Organization started in 2007 by Wreath Producer Morrill Worcester. Every year\, in partnership with shipping companies\, truckers\, living veterans\, cemetery staff\, and all number of volunteers\, Wreaths Across America place wreaths on the graves of veterans who have passed to “Remember\, Honor\, and Teach” about the memory of their lives and service. \nIf you are interested in attending the ceremony and potentially placing a wreath\, please RSVP here.\nIf you are interested in donating a wreath for the ceremony\, please see our page HERE.\nLearn more about Wreaths Across America at their website.
