DESCRIPTION:Who protected memorials at BLM fence? (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand and typically offered on Mother’s Day\, this tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nTours are limited. Registration is required. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate. How do we understand death for military service members and veterans? What are the customs and obligations of our country to service members? How do we memorialize and remember? And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. After graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in History from Old Dominion University\, A.J. worked at Hampton Roads Naval Museum as an Educator and at the National Museum of the United States Army as an Education Specialist- Lead before joining the staff at Historic Congressional Cemetery. He is the author of “The Navy’s City: Norfolk’s Military History” in A History Lover’s Guide to Norfolk and is a contributor to Washington History Magazine. He is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about all things history and is always eager to share the amazing stories of the past.  He specializes in American military history\, with a particular focus on the American Civil War and World War II. He enjoys reading\, sports\, cups of black coffee\, and is an avid Disc Golf player. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Infectious Disease in World History
DESCRIPTION:As long as human beings have existed\, so too have infectious diseases. These invisible foes of humanity have proliferated and thrived across history\, claiming the lives of untold billions across human history. \nThe Covid-19 Pandemic illustrated to people living today the all too real prevalence of infectious diseases on human societies\, but this relevance is not a new phenomenon. Indeed\, over 100 years ago the 1918 Influenza Pandemic devasted the United States and the world. From September to December 1918 alone\, over 250\,000 people died in the United States from the deadly disease. The  influence of diseases on history are visible across the 35 acres of the cemetery in the form of the various graves and memorials left behind by their victims. \nTo explore the influence of disease on history\, please join us this November for a Cemetery Speaker series event\, with a presentation from a local historian coupled with a thematic tour of the grounds from one of our docents. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. DESCRIPTION:Congressional Cemetery will host a candle lighting on December 10 at 7pm as part of The Compassionate Friends 27th Worldwide Candle Lighting. \nNOTE! Despite the rain we ARE STILL HOLDING THE CEREMONY. Come in the front gate and follow the lighted path to the chapel where we will be warm and dry together. \nCompassionate Friends is an international organization dedicated to “supporting family after a child has died.” This annual mass candle lighting is believed to be the largest such event on the globe. Families around the world who have lost a child of any age gather in groups or in homes to create a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7pm local time for one hour. \nJoin us IN THE CHAPEL of Historic Congressional Cemetery at 1801 E St SE in Washington\, DC from 7pm to 8pm as we join the world “in lighting candles for one hour to honor the memories of the sons\, daughters\, brothers\, sisters\, and grandchildren who left too soon.” \nIf you are not able to be with us in person you can join in the international event online. Details HERE. \nAs part of our remembrance\, we are decorating our Big Chair outside the cemetery with images of candles and inviting the public to add the names of people’s children lost\, at any age\, recent or long ago. If you cannot attend in person we invite you to send the name of your person for us to add to the exhibit. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nKitty is a professional photographer originally from London\, England and when she’s not taking photos of the cemetery\, she is documenting the living. \nShe has been fascinated by the technology and power of photography since she was quite young and is passionate in her pursuit of creatively capturing people’s most meaningful memories.\nKitty sees the profound impact photography has on the way we remember others\, and the way we perceive our own permanence. \nHave you ever found an old photograph tucked away in a dusty album and felt a rush of memories flooding back? The sight of a familiar face\, the backdrop of a special place\, or a moment with a loved one – these are triggers for our memories\, like keys that unlock the doors to our past. \nYour assignment for this session is to bring one photograph\, printed or digital\, that captures a memory with someone who has died. We will focus on the memory within the photo\, very specifically\, not the before or after or the story of that person. Just that memory within the frame. \nBy extension\, we will be exploring the role of photographs in our relationships with people and how we will live on after death. \nWe will also share a list of resources to dig deeper into this topic. How can we organize and save these memories? Is there a difference between digital and printed? Photos copied from other photos? Manipulated images. And the newer technologies that may change our relationship with photography. \nAnd\, rumor has it\, a photo may be taken on this date\, using an older technology and creating a single original image. DESCRIPTION:This is our final Death Doula Day activity for 2023. \nThis end of year session in our end of life topic will be a celebration and a remembrance of an extraordinary project. Come with a dish to share for a Death Doula Day community meal\, from 11am to 1pm. \nCome remember the activities\, the guests\, the conversations we engaged in over the year and reconnect with others who have been with us one time\, many times\, or even haven’t been able to attend but always wanted to! \nRSVP here. \nWhat is Death Doula Days? \nNo one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week.
