This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths. Come ready to sweat and leave in spooktacular good shape with trainer Darius. And you won’t be walking like Frankenstein after the flexibility exercises that you’ll do! Each hour long class will provide a full-body workout combining cardiovascular exercise with strength training. Please bring a mat and your water bottle. All other equipment will be provided. All fitness levels are welcome! Classes are free but advanced registration is required. Space is limited to 20 people per class. Boneyard Bootcamp meets rain or shine in Congressional Cemetery. \nMeet your trainer: Darius Singpurwalla is a Capitol Hill resident who has taught boot camp style fitness courses in Washington DC for the past several years. He has lived on the hill since 2019 with his wife and dog\, Wallace. And while these tragedies influenced the course of their lives\, it didn’t define them. Rather\, it was the triumph over the tragedy\, the beauty in the sorrow\, that did. \nAcross 4 evenings this October\, discover a selection of tragic tales of Congressional Cemetery’s residents. Learn how they are alive today in our memory. Encounter them\, and their stories\, brought back to life by our talented actors.  Bear witness to their legacies. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \n \nVIP Tours:\nWe offer exclusive VIP tours as a part of Soul Strolls! On Fridays\, the 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM are exclusively VIP. DESCRIPTION:Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of October 24\, her birthday\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. This new signage will celebrate Lockwood’s self made origins as a Western New York native.  A short cupcake reception will follow at The Lockwood. \nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP HERE.  \nSpecial thanks to Royalton-Hartland Central School Class of 1972 for their generous donation of the new signage and to the people of Middleport\, NY for honoring one of their own. \n

DESCRIPTION:DCVC October Gathering at the Congressional Cemetery \nDCVC is thrilled to return to Congressional Cemetery for our October gathering! VC is a nonprofit collective of leading documentary filmmakers and video journalists from across the world. We’re run entirely by volunteers and we host regular screenings of 3-4 short documentaries followed by chats with or messages from the creators. The idea is to build on our creative community here in DC and inspire our members to continue telling important stories. \nOctober 26th\, we’ll be screening films all around Life & Death. All are welcome – whether you’re a filmmaker or not! Pizza and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. This event will be outdoors and picnic-style so bringing blankets and camping chairs is recommended. (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you will have the opportunity to ask AJ questions about a topic of special interest to him\, and of course for all of us at a place like Congressional Cemetery. How do we understand death for military service members and veterans? What are the customs and obligations of our country to service members? How do we memorialize and remember? And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. After graduating with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in History from Old Dominion University\, A.J. worked at Hampton Roads Naval Museum as an Educator and at the National Museum of the United States Army as an Education Specialist- Lead before joining the staff at Historic Congressional Cemetery. He is the author of “The Navy’s City: Norfolk’s Military History” in A History Lover’s Guide to Norfolk and is a contributor to Washington History Magazine. He is extremely passionate and enthusiastic about all things history and is always eager to share the amazing stories of the past.  He specializes in American military history\, with a particular focus on the American Civil War and World War II. He enjoys reading\, sports\, cups of black coffee\, and is an avid Disc Golf player. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Infectious Disease in World History
DESCRIPTION:As long as human beings have existed\, so too have infectious diseases. These invisible foes of humanity have proliferated and thrived across history\, claiming the lives of untold billions across human history. \nThe Covid-19 Pandemic illustrated to people living today the all too real prevalence of infectious diseases on human societies\, but this relevance is not a new phenomenon. Indeed\, over 100 years ago the 1918 Influenza Pandemic devasted the United States and the world. From September to December 1918 alone\, over 250\,000 people died in the United States from the deadly disease. The  influence of diseases on history are visible across the 35 acres of the cemetery in the form of the various graves and memorials left behind by their victims. \nTo explore the influence of disease on history\, please join us this November for a Cemetery Speaker series event\, with a presentation from a local historian coupled with a thematic tour of the grounds from one of our docents. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds.
