Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm (and in the summer 10:30 AM to beat the heat)\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths. DESCRIPTION:As an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death. But just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement facilitating thoughts and discussion about the often taboo subject of death\, It’s a intimate informal gathering to discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea. There is no agenda other than providing a safe space to have an open ended conversation. \nPlease join us for Historic Congressional Cemetery Death Cafes on October 10 from 6:00 PM- 7:30 PM in our historic chapel. Tickets are free and are available for reservation approximately one month prior to the event date on September 12. \nWe will have a rotating slate of individuals from the local death positive community to moderate the event. Complimentary refreshments will be served but we ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share with the group. A $5 donation\, to help cover event costs\, is also welcome but not required. In addition\, you do not have to use your real name to register\, just a name you will recognize so we can check you in at the door. DESCRIPTION:Dead Man’s Run is Congressional Cemetery’s annual 5k race. And in 2023\, it’s back and spookier than ever! Please join us Saturday\, October 14 at 5:30 PM for the region’s most death defying and thematic 5k race. This bare bones run is the best way to stay ahead of your grave…by running among them! The race starts with a toll of the funeral bell and continues throughout the Cemetery and onto the Anacostia Trail for a ghostly evening run full of spooky music and other fun! \nCostumes are encouraged\, with prizes for best individual costume and best team costume! Form a team to compete with your friends – and we love to see creative team names. A panel of judges will select the winner. \nAll proceeds from Congressional Cemetery events\, including Dead Man’s Run\, help support our 501(c)(3) organization and fund the preservation of this National Historic Landmark” \nRegister here! Dead Man’s Run 5k Registration Page (zippy-reg.com) \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 5:30 pm inside the cemetery registration opens at 4:00 pm).\n \nCost: $35 for the race \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. \nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRunning with a pup? Their stories reflect our story as a nation\, helping us understand the past to inform our future. In this macabre mirror\, we can catch glimpses of tragic twists of fate endured by them. And while these tragedies influenced the course of their lives\, it didn’t define them. Rather\, it was the triumph over the tragedy\, the beauty in the sorrow\, that did. \nAcross 4 evenings this October\, discover a selection of tragic tales of Congressional Cemetery’s residents. Learn how they are alive today in our memory. Encounter them\, and their stories\, brought back to life by our talented actors.  Bear witness to their legacies. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \n \nVIP Tours:\nWe offer exclusive VIP tours as a part of Soul Strolls! On Fridays\, the 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM are exclusively VIP. On Saturdays\, the 6:00 PM\, 7:00 PM\, and 8:00 PM tours are VIP. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. DESCRIPTION:Belva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of October 24\, her birthday\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. This new signage will celebrate Lockwood’s self made origins as a Western New York native.  A short cupcake reception will follow at The Lockwood. \nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP HERE.  \nSpecial thanks to Royalton-Hartland Central School Class of 1972 for their generous donation of the new signage and to the people of Middleport\, NY for honoring one of their own. \n

Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Many of the interred residents at Congressional Cemetery unfortunately endured traumatic and unfortunate deaths. Murders\, suicides\, executions\, and accidents are just some of the catastrophes which marked the ends of some of those buried at the cemetery. Individuals from David Herold\, an infamous Lincoln assassination conspirator\, to the Reed family\, tragically killed in a steam boat accident\, are all covered on the tour. To learn more about the stories of their untimely demises\, please join one of our docents for a specialty tour of the cemetery grounds which highlights these unfortunate episodes. \nTickets are $5 per person. DESCRIPTION:Who protected memorials at BLM fence? (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand and typically offered on Mother’s Day\, this tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nTours are limited. Registration is required. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate. The tour is rain or shine. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths.
