DESCRIPTION:Experience Congressional Cemetery through Mindfulness\nImmerse yourself in the natural and cultural features of Congressional Cemetery through an outdoor mindfulness tour. Outdoor mindfulness is akin to Shinrin-yoku\, or forest bathing\, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. Research shows that extended contemplative time in nature calms the mind\, promotes well-being\, and cultivates a profound sense of belonging. The session begins with warm-ups\, centering\, and breathing exercises. These are followed by a non-strenuous walk\, and an extended sit. We will slow down\, be curious\, and take time to connect with the natural and historic place that is Congressional Cemetery. Mindfulness Among the Monuments is lead by Susan West Montgomery. Susan is a certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide providing outdoor mindfulness excursions in the Washington DC region and beyond. She specializes in developing customized excursions at historic and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome. In the event of inclement weather\, the book signing will take place in the chapel. \nAbout the book:\nObject Lessons is a series of short\, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. \nGrave takes a ground-level view of how burial sites have transformed over time and how they continue to change. As a cemetery tour guide\, Allison C. Meier has spent more time walking among tombstones than most. Even for her\, the grave has largely been invisible\, an out of the way and unobtrusive marker of death. However\, graves turn out to be not always so subtle\, reverent\, or permanent. \nWhile the indigent and unidentified have frequently been interred in mass graves\, a fate brought into the public eye during the COVID-19 pandemic\, the practice today is not unlike burials in the potter’s fields of the colonial era. Burial is not the only option\, of course\, and Meier analyzes the rise of cremation\, green burial\, and new practices like human composting\, investigating what is next for the grave and how existing spaces of death can be returned to community life. \nObject Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic. \nAbout the author:\n \nAllison C. Liana Mensh*\, an art director here in DC\, is taking the lead on a special experience. During our “Bucket List” session a few months ago it came up that so many of us have a lot of “aspirational” art and craft supplies. We buy them with good intentions but don’t use them\, and they haunt us and taunt us. \nSo\, we’re inviting you to grab those unused marker sets\, glitter pens\, glue guns and watercolors and bring them down. Not to make great art\, though. We’re going to make some bad art and have good fun doing it. We’re going to let go of the projects that are taking up space in our closets and causing us regret. We’ll make stuff for a few hours and then swap items freely: bring some\, take some others home\, and with our newfound creativity and freedom not to do things expertly we will give these items new life. \nBeing death positive is about living fully. Let’s not let our artsy crafty impulses cramp our style! \nPLEASE BRING your unused ART SUPPLIES\, CRAFT SUPPLIES\, interesting objects\, sparkly things\, gewgaws and gimcracks. Tickets are free and are available for reservation approximately one month prior to the event date on September 12. \nWe will have a rotating slate of individuals from the local death positive community to moderate the event. DESCRIPTION:Dead Man’s Run is Congressional Cemetery’s annual 5k race. And in 2023\, it’s back and spookier than ever! Please join us Saturday\, October 14 at 5:30 PM for the region’s most death defying and thematic 5k race. This bare bones run is the best way to stay ahead of your grave…by running among them! The race starts with a toll of the funeral bell and continues throughout the Cemetery and onto the Anacostia Trail for a ghostly evening run full of spooky music and other fun! \nCostumes are encouraged\, with prizes for best individual costume and best team costume! Form a team to compete with your friends – and we love to see creative team names. A panel of judges will select the winner. \nAll proceeds from Congressional Cemetery events\, including Dead Man’s Run\, help support our 501(c)(3) organization and fund the preservation of this National Historic Landmark” \nRegister here! However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. \nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRunning with a pup? Please: no retractable leashes; all participating dogs must be properly vaccinated and well-socialized. \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \n​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nCostume Contest:  \nDressing for the occasion? In addition to prizes for the top finishers\, a panel of judge will award prizes to the top individual and team costumes. Entry into the contest in on race day only. Find our panel of judges near the starting line\, fill out a small registration card\, and the judges will check out your costume. Be sure to arrive early to register to win! \nT-shirts (tank tops\, long sleeve and sweatshirts!): Can be purchased here\, by runners and spectators. And while these tragedies influenced the course of their lives\, it didn’t define them. Rather\, it was the triumph over the tragedy\, the beauty in the sorrow\, that did. \nAcross 4 evenings this October\, discover a selection of tragic tales of Congressional Cemetery’s residents. Learn how they are alive today in our memory. Encounter them\, and their stories\, brought back to life by our talented actors.  Bear witness to their legacies. Come and experience Soul Strolls 2023: Tragic Lives and Demise. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 20-21 and October 27-28. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 20\, Oct 27) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 21\, Oct 28). General Admission Adult tickets are $40\, General Admission Children’s tickets are $15\, and VIP Tickets are $75. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \n \nVIP Tours:\nWe offer exclusive VIP tours as a part of Soul Strolls! On Fridays\, the 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM are exclusively VIP. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 65\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their story is our story and many of them lived noteworthy and extraordinary lives. Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths.
