They include cabinet members\, a vice president\, an assassination conspirator\, a photographer\, architects\, a wayward son\, secretaries\, a landlady\, and a bodyguard. Do the fright thing and get into the Summerween spirit with a killer lineup of local comedians in the (air-conditioned!) Congressional Cemetery Chapel. Wear your spookiest summer style and come early to grab some boo(!)ze and explore the grounds – we’re dying to see you there.\n– Headliner Griefcat with Violet Gray\, Kade Wonders\, Jelani Wills\, Maddie Pickens\, and host Dana Fleitman!\nDoors and bar open one hour before the start time. Come early and walk the cemetery with a self-guided tour\, then grab a drink and an ice cream treat (no tricks\, we promise!) DESCRIPTION:Prison Terminal\, the Oscar-nominated documentary\, explores the end of life of an incarcerated man cared for by fellow incarcerated men. \n\n\n\nWhat is it like to die in prison? With an aging population within and outside prisons\, more attention is paid to end-of-life care. While hospices and families focus on comfort care\, dignity\, and legacy\, these are not always available for incarcerated people. \nThe setting for this gathering is particularly meaningful because Congressional Cemetery and the DC Jail share a wall\, reminding us that issues of mortality and humanity exist side by side. \nThis free screening of Prison Terminal\, the Oscar-nominated documentary short directed by Edgar Barens\, explores the end of life faced by individuals whose decisions and activities are determined by prison authorities. The filmmaker of Prison Terminal spent six months with incarcerated men who were aging and dying\, prison staff\, and incarcerated peer caregivers. The documentary focuses on one incarcerated man\, Jack Hall\, a U.S. war veteran convicted of murder\, and the incarcerated men who cared for him as he declined and died. \nThe film’s director\, Edgar Barens\, and representatives of the Humane Prison Hospice Project\, will join us for a panel discussion following the screening\, facilitated by DC Death Collective members. \nCome view the film and join us to discuss the growth of programs in U.S. prisons that expand dignified\, compassionate care for incarcerated people as they age and die. We hope to encourage community awareness and action around these topics. \n“The commitment of the inmate hospice volunteers – and the competence and reverence with which they provide care – shows that dying people’s comfort and dignity can be preserved even in the least desirable situations. Our society could learn a lot from the example they set. While we may not have any hidden masonic treasure in the cemetery (or so you think)\, we hope you’ll still join us for a Cinematery screening of National Treasure\, happening Friday\, July 17th! Bring your family\, friends\, and partners in crime for this history filled adventure! \nThe rain date will be July 24th. \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. Bring your family\, friends\, and partners in crime for this history filled adventure! \nThe rain date will be July 24th. \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. Dogs are not permitted at Cinematery. \nTickets on sale May 29th\nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. The doors open at 7:30 pm. \nWhy the ticket price has changed from last year? This price reflects new Licensing agreements which require a larger revenue split with production companies when showing their movies. This means we have to update the pricing for Cinematery to maintain our goal of raising funds for the cemetery while engaging the community. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. Still an active burial ground\, it is the only place in Washington where individuals can be buried at a site directly on Pierre L’Enfant’s 18th century city plan. \nHistoric Congressional Cemetery was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011 and continues to build upon the legacy of over 200 years of American history. The cemetery is administered by the nonprofit Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery and owned by Christ Church + Washington Parish. The association is constantly striving to maintain the historic\, cultural\, and aesthetic qualities of this natural landscape along the Anacostia River. Then join us in Congressional Cemetery’s chapel for Creative Crypt! \nThe Creative Crypt at HCC is an extension of Mausoleums and Manuscripts. It’s a two-hour work time for creative projects like writing\, visual arts\, fiber arts and more. Meet other creative people and make progress on your projects in the inspiring environment of HCC. It’s completely free join! \nCreative Crypt will have two categories: silent workshops and chatty workshops. \nSilent workshops are a quiet workspace with very limited talking. This time encourages you to get into a workflow in an environment with other creatives. Headphones are allowed. \nChatty workshops are just that – a time to chat and work. This is perfect for getting to know other creatives and getting feedback and advice on your work. These will workshop types will alternate\, so check out the dates below. Bring your journalling\, drawing\, knitting\, and more! \nWhat materials are permitted? \nWater-soluble and non-toxic materials are permitted. This workshop takes place in a historic building\, therefore we cannot allow materials that will stain\, require ventilation\, or may harm others in the workshop. We suggest graphite\, colored pencils\, yarns/threads\, and easy to clean materials. Please bring a cutting mat for any blades. Oil paint\, glitter (including glitter glue)\, and aerosols cans are not permitted. If you’re not sure about a material\, please email us with any questions. HCC Staff will ask you to remove any materials deemed harmful to the building\, cemetery\, or other participants of Creative Crypt. \nIs food permitted? \nYes\, feel free to bring a snack and covered beverage with you! \nIs there a sink? \nNo industrial sinks are available. Please plan to clean and dispose of materials when you get home. \nCan I work in the Cemetery? \nYes! Please do not lean on headstones or use them as a surface. Rubbings are not permitted as they can damage headstones. \n

Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. On this tour of approximately 90 minutes\, one of our trained docents will share with you the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \n\nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. This is a non-refundable donation.\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. Tours are rain or shine.
