At 2:00 PM\, we will hold a brief memorial ceremony that will include reading the names of all those interred this past year\, followed by an opportunity for families to participate in a ceremonial remembrance activity at the conclusion of the program. \nThis event is open to all family members and loved ones who wish to attend. We would be honored to gather with you as we remember those who will always be a cherished part of our cemetery’s history.

Her body temperature plummets\, her breathing and heart rates drop to a minimum\, and her glands simulate the smell of a putrefying corpse. Playing Possum explores what the opossum and other creatures can teach us about how we and other species understand mortality\, and demonstrates that the concept of death\, far from being a uniquely human attribute\, is widespread in the animal kingdom. \nWith humor and empathy\, Susana Monsó tells the stories of ants who attend their own funerals\, chimpanzees who clean the teeth of their dead\, dogs who snack on their caregivers\, crows who avoid the places where they saw a carcass\, elephants obsessed with collecting ivory\, and whales who carry their dead for weeks. Monsó\, one of today’s leading experts on animal cognition and ethics\, shows how there are more ways to conceive of mortality than the human way\, and challenges the notion that the only emotional reactions to death worthy of our attention are ones that resemble our own. \nStill interested? DESCRIPTION:Join artist Lillie J. Harris for this unique workshop! \nSunday\, March 15th from 1pm-3pm \nIn this workshop\, we will collaboratively make our own comics by looking at examples of how death can be used in graphic storytelling. Participants will draw on their own personal and collective feelings about death in order to create comics in intentional and compassionate ways. Using an improvisational method\, we’ll learn to place death into comics regardless of genre; from horror to autobio to science fiction and anything in between. \nAll skill levels are welcome! \n$5 Tickets available HERE\n \n  \nLillie J. Harris is a cartoonist\, arts educator\, and Nebula Award-nominated writer from Clinton\, MD. DESCRIPTION:Women’s contributions during the American Civil War were substantial. Thousands on both sides served as nurses\, while others manufactured ammunition. Some even took up arms in the battle between North and South.\n\nHistoric Congressional Cemetery is the final resting place of numerous women who had active roles in the deadliest American war. This Women’s History Month\, Congressional is partnering with the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum to highlight some of these interred residents. This jointly-operated walking tour will be held at Congressional Cemetery on Sunday\, March 22nd at 1 p.m.\n\n\nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds benefit both non-profits. \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT! \nBuy Tickets \nFurther Tour Information \n\nVisitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave.\nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths.\nThe event is rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:On March 27\, Historic Congressional Cemetery invites the public to join us in a remembrance and wreath laying ceremony at the Arsenal Monument\, honoring the Irish immigrant women who lost their lives in the tragic Washington Arsenal explosion during the Civil War.\n\n\nIn June 1864\, a catastrophic explosion tore through the Washington Arsenal\, killing young women and girls who had stepped into industrial work traditionally reserved for men while the nation was at war. Most of them were Irish immigrants serving their adoptive country while many of their husbands fought in the Union Army. Their labor supported the Union cause and their deaths shook the capital. Today\, their memory endures beneath the towering Arsenal Monument at Congressional Cemetery\, a lasting testament to sacrifice\, service\, and immigrant contributions to America.\n\n\n\nThis year’s commemoration will feature remarks from Executive Director Mark Hudson and Her Excellency Geraldine Byrne Nason\, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States. Ambassador Nason will lay the ceremonial wreath at the monument in honor of the women whose lives were cut short in service to their adopted nation.\n\nThe Arsenal Monument stands not only as a memorial to tragedy\, but as a reminder of the essential role immigrant women played in shaping Washington\, D.C.\, and the United States. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. An Evening with the Residents\, a nod to the affectionate nickname for those permanently interred at the Cemetery\, invites guests to experience an evening of humor that explores themes of remembrance\, mortality\, and the ways we talk about life and legacy\, in only the way that some of DC’s top comedians can. The program continues Congressional’s commitment to death awareness\, encouraging open\, approachable conversations about death awareness in a historic setting dedicated to memory and community.\n\nWe hope that you will join us for an Evening with the Residents on Friday\, April 3rd!\n\nFlexible Rain Plan \nThis event is designed with a flexible rain plan and will proceed rain or shine. Two ticket tiers are available:\n\n\n$20 Lawn Seating: Outdoor seating on the chapel lawn if weather permits. In the event of rain and a pivot indoors\, guests who purchase this tier will receive a refund due to limited chapel capacity.\n\n\n$25 Guaranteed Seating: Lawn seating in fair weather\, with a guaranteed spot inside the chapel if the event moves indoors.\n\n\nIf the show is outdoors\, make sure you bring your blankets and low lying chairs\, as the seating will be in a grassy area. \nPlease note: there is no rain date. In the case of inclement weather\, the performance will move into the chapel.\n\nBuy Tickets \n\nFeatured Comics: \n \n  \nSamson Shete is a stand-up comedian from Columbus\, Ohio\, now based in the DMV area. He was passed at the Columbus Funny Bone\, where he hosted and featured for touring comedians. Samson was named Columbus’s Funniest Comic and was also runner-up in the Cincinnati Funniest competition. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeer\, wine\, and soft drinks will be available for purchase.\n\nDoors & Bar Open at 7:00 PM in the HCC Chapel\, with the show scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM.\n\nThe cemetery will be closed to dogs from 6:00pm-10:30pm.
