Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. Built to house the seats of federal government\, the nation’s capital soon became a city in its own right\, a place where people lived\, worked\, and\, of course\, died. A mix of congressmen\, merchants\, military officers\, diplomats\, architects\, and enslaved individuals comprised the fabric of the new capital\, an experimental mix of people in an experimental new nation. \nWe invite you to experience the lives of the people in the early days of the Federal City in a new special tour of the cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. DESCRIPTION:Postponed to Sunday\, 9/7 Due to Weather\n\nJoin us at Historic Congressional Cemetery for a special screening of If These Stones Could Talk\, a powerful documentary that uncovers a long-buried chapter of Washington\, DC’s history. The film tells the remarkable story of headstones from Columbian Harmony Cemetery—a historic African American burial ground once located at 9th Street and Rhode Island Avenue NE—that were discovered decades later\, discarded in the Potomac River. In 1960\, the graves were relocated\, and the Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood Metro station now sits on the site. Through community voices\, archival footage\, and a fight for remembrance\, the documentary follows the journey to restore dignity to those once forgotten.\n\n\n\nRuntime: 42 minutes \n\n\nGates Open: 6:30p \n\n\nMovie Starts: 7:30p \n\n\nFollowed by a Post-Show Discussion \n\n\nIn the event of rain\, the film will screen on Sunday\, September 7th.  \n\n  \n\nWe recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a ceremony and commemoration at Congressional Cemetery honoring the life and service of Major General Alexander Macomb\, Commanding General of the United States Army from 1828 to 1841. \nSeptember 20\, 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM \nAwarded the Congressional Gold Medal for service during the War of 1812\, General Macomb patriotically served the United States for decades. On September 20\, we will honor the reinterment of Macomb’s remains with a military ceremony and various speakers. A light reception in the Chapel will follow the ceremony. \nThis ceremony will not only honor General Macomb’s legacy\, but also serve as a tribute to the thousands of veterans interred at Congressional Cemetery —men and women of the Army\, Navy\, Air Force\, and Marine Corps whose service has safeguarded our nation for more than two centuries. \nPresented in partnership with representatives of the United States Armed Forces\, this event will also commemorate the 250th anniversaries of the Army\, Navy\, and Marine Corps. He was first buried at the Presbyterian Burying Ground before being removed and reinterred at Congressional Cemetery in 1850. Joined in death by his wife Catherine\, the Macombs rested there until the mid-2000s\, when the towering obelisk marking their grave began to lean. To prevent the vault from collapsing\, the Department of Veterans Affairs repaired the monument. During this work\, the Macombs’ remains were removed\, and the Smithsonian\, in coordination with the Macomb descendants\, studied the remains and burial contents. \nMost of General Macomb’s remains were reinterred in 2008 in a military ceremony attended by descendants. However\, the story did not end there. In November 2024\, the Smithsonian returned the final remains and artifacts removed from the Macomb vault and others for study. In honor of the Army’s 250th anniversary and the approaching America 250 commemoration\, we are proud to reinter General Macomb’s remains for a fourth and final time — in partnership with local Department of Defense commands and the Macomb family.

Courtesy of New England Historical Society \nSign up here!\nIn his capacities as general\, president\, enslaver\, and farmer\, George Washington received support from many individuals who — compared to the nation’s first chief executive — are less remembered. One such person is Tobias Lear\, who in 1784 was recommended by General Benjamin Lincoln to serve as Washington’s executive secretary. Over the next 15 years\, Lear worked for Washington as an indispensable employee and became\, literally\, part of the Washington family. His relationship with Washington ended only with the general’s death in 1799\, which Lear witnessed and recorded in detail. Lear’s own demise in 1816 was followed by his burial in Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nFor this entry of the 2025 Speaker Series\, HCC is thrilled to welcome one of the country’s most sought-out presidential historians\, Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky\, to discuss Lear’s life and connection to George Washington. Dr. Chervinsky currently serves as the Executive Director of the George Washington Presidential Library. She is the author of the award-winning books\, The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution and Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic\, and co-editor of Mourning the Presidents: Loss and Legacy in American Culture. She regularly writes for public audiences in the Wall Street Journal\, The Bulwark\, Time Magazine\, USA Today\, CNN\, and the Washington Post. \nFollowing Dr. Chervinsky’s presentation\, come along on a docent-led tour to the grave of Tobias Lear\, as well as the final resting places of more of Washington’s contemporaries and other figures from the nation’s founding era. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education.
