Their story is our story and many of them lived noteworthy and extraordinary lives. Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm (and in the summer 10:30 AM to beat the heat)\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths. We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. Join us for evening of frightful and delightful cinematic magic among the stones. This is Halloween and This is Cinematery. \n \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at a gorgeous Washington landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset. Books will also be for sale at the event. A complimentary tour of many of the gravesites related to the presidency and vice presidency will be offered as a part of the event\, with the author in attendance. \nThe event is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP here!\nYou can purchase your own copy of Presidential Grave Hunter here!\nThe event is rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather\, the book signing will take place in the chapel. \nAbout the book:\nIn 2003\, nine-year-old presidential enthusiast Kurt Deion presented his father with an audacious request: would he help him follow in the footsteps of historian Richard Norton Smith and C-SPAN founder Brian Lamb by taking him to visit the final resting place of each dead U.S. president? He got all he asked for\, and more. \nDeion’s journey to these tombs\, and from elementary school neophyte to college history major\, was unorthodox. With his zany\, boundary-pushing father at the wheel\, the straight-laced youngster found himself sneaking a camera past Secret Service agents\, purposely locked in a cemetery enclosed with barbed wire\, and handcuffed to the former Dallas homicide detective who was tethered to alleged JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald when he was shot by Jack Ruby. Most daringly\, he (reluctantly) gained entry to a vice president’s private family burial ground in order to possibly become the lone person to have visited each presidential and vice presidential grave\, collectively. \nIn this history-driven memoir\, Deion reconstructs his decade-long\, cross-country quest and analyzes the evolution of his perspective on the commanders-in-chief and what it means to visit a cemetery. \nAbout the author:\nKURT DEION is a public historian\, author\, guest speaker\, and the presidential expert for RoadsideAmerica.com. He holds an M.A. in history. At age 14 he launched kurtshistoricsites.com as a means to both document his travels and to encourage others to visit gravesites and engage in hands-on history. SUMMARY:Lincoln Assassination Tour
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! This is your chance to experience our one of a kind Lincoln Assassination Tour if you missed the Cemetery Speaker Series earlier this year. \nYou may purchase tickets here!\nOn April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \n \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nPlease join one of our expert docents for a tour of the graves and memorials associated with the assassination at Congressional Cemetery. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. A philosopher\, writer\, and educator\, Locke’s work helped define the contours of the Harlem Renaissance\, helping spread African American intellectual thought across the United States in the early 20th century. In particular\, Locke’s The New Negro: An Interpretation (1925) is widely considered to be the pivotal text of the New Negro Movement. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. studied Locke’s works and cited him as an important influence when he stated on March 19\, 1968 that\, “We’re going to let our children know that the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle\, but W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe.” \n \nYet Locke did not only battle racial discrimination. As a gay man\, Locke was aware of his minority status even among other African Americans. In a 1949 note\, Locke reflected on the irony of being born in the U.S. with three minority identities: “Had I been born in ancient Greece\, I would have escaped the first [his sexual identity]; in Europe\, I would have been spared the second [U.S. racial segregation policies and discrimination]; in Japan I would have been above rather than below average [height].” \n \nJune is a month of celebration for both African American heritage with Juneteenth and LGBTQ+ Americans for Pride Month. These “double minorities” are embodied in the legacy of Alain Locke. In honor of the Dean of the Harlem Renaissance\, please join us on Saturday\, June 24 at 10:30 AM for a special Cemetery Speaker Series honoring both African Americans and Gay Americans. One part speaking engagement and one part docent led tour\, the event features keynote remarks on the life and legacy of Locke from Dr. Greg Carr\, Associate Professor in the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University\, followed by a thematic tour of both African American and LGBTQ+ gravesites\, culminating of course with a visit to the grave of Alain Locke himself. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 65\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their story is our story and many of them lived noteworthy and extraordinary lives. Come and learn from one of our expert docents who will share the stories of some of our interred residents in an approximately 1-to-1.5-hour tour of the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. This tour takes a broad look at the cemetery’s history and captures the life and times of some of our most notable interred residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required. $5 donation per person. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 pm\, rain or shine\, and comfortable attire\, including footwear\, is strongly encouraged as tours often stray from the main paths.
