DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Cinematery is back at Historic Congressional Cemetery\, bringing classic monster related films to romp through the grounds with Mausoleums and Monsters! Kick off summer on Friday\, May 23rd with the iconic shark thriller Jaws—just when you thought it was safe to go back in the grass. Then\, on Friday\, June 13th\, delight the whole family with the heartwarming chaos of Monsters\, Inc.. We’ll turn up the heat again on Friday\, August 29th with the sand-swept thrills of The Mummy\, and wrap up the season with paranormal perfection on Friday\, September 12th as Ghostbusters haunts the cemetery in style. Bring a blanket\, your bravest friends\, and settle in for a movie night like no other—where the stars shine bright and the dead don’t mind a little company.\n\nIn the event of rain\, the film will screen on the following Friday evening (please note the below rain dates\, May 30\, June 20\, September 3\, September 19).\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you.\n\nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset.\n\n\nRegister Below!\n\n\n \n\n  \n\n \n\n\n\n\nOur official pre-game location of choice is Duffy’s Irish Pub! These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. Built to house the seats of federal government\, the nation’s capital soon became a city in its own right\, a place where people lived\, worked\, and\, of course\, died. A mix of congressmen\, merchants\, military officers\, diplomats\, architects\, and enslaved individuals comprised the fabric of the new capital\, an experimental mix of people in an experimental new nation. \nWe invite you to experience the lives of the people in the early days of the Federal City in a new special tour of the cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. The film tells the remarkable story of headstones from Columbian Harmony Cemetery—a historic African American burial ground once located at 9th Street and Rhode Island Avenue NE—that were discovered decades later\, discarded in the Potomac River. In 1960\, the graves were relocated\, and the Rhode Island Avenue–Brentwood Metro station now sits on the site. Through community voices\, archival footage\, and a fight for remembrance\, the documentary follows the journey to restore dignity to those once forgotten.\n\n\n\nRuntime: 42 minutes \n\n\nGates Open: 6:30p \n\n\nMovie Starts: 7:30p \n\n\nFollowed by a Post-Show Discussion \n\n\nIn the event of rain\, the film will screen on Sunday\, September 7th.  \n\n  \n\nWe recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. Kick off summer on Friday\, May 23rd with the iconic shark thriller Jaws—just when you thought it was safe to go back in the grass. Then\, on Friday\, June 13th\, delight the whole family with the heartwarming chaos of Monsters\, Inc.. We’ll turn up the heat again on Friday\, August 29th with the sand-swept thrills of The Mummy\, and wrap up the season with paranormal perfection on Friday\, September 12th as Ghostbusters haunts the cemetery in style. Bring a blanket\, your bravest friends\, and settle in for a movie night like no other—where the stars shine bright and the dead don’t mind a little company.\n\nIn the event of rain\, the film will screen on the following Friday evening (please note the below rain dates\, May 30\, June 20\, September 3\, September 19).\n\n\nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry.
