These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Get your tickets today—this is a rare opportunity to spend an evening of live entertainment in one of DC’s historic\, revered landmarks. \nBeer\, wine\, and soft drinks available for sale. \nDoors & Bar Open at 7:00 PM in the HCC Chapel. \nComic Line Up \nElizabeth Booker Houston: Elizabeth Booker Houston is a comedienne who hails from Memphis\, Tennessee and now calls the DC metro area home. She has performed at venues such as the Lincoln Theater in DC and the DC Improv\, and headlined at the DC Comedy Loft\, Mic Drop\, FunnyBone\, and West Side Comedy Club. She has worked with comedians such as DL Hughley\, Atsuko Okatsuka\, and Chaunté Wayans. When Elizabeth is not on stage\, you can find her making witty and funny commentary on Instagram\, TikTok\, YouTube\, and Substack where she has amassed millions of views and hundreds of thousands of followers. \nStacey Axler: Stacey Axler has been performing regularly since 2021\, at shows and clubs throughout DC and Maryland. Stacey has performed in comedy festivals such as the North Carolina Comedy Festival\, Solocom in NYC and the Sixth City Comedy Festival. Stacey also hosts a monthly standup show. \nDavid Balagizi: David Balagizi is a young comic\, who lights an audience with his crowd work\, African upbringing\, and also his weird observations. 
He’s amassed an amazing 1 Million on Social Media with his hilarious videos! David has also had the pleasure of working with headliners like Joe List\, Faizon Love and Steve Byrne! And has headlined all across the DMV area and NY. \nJoey Friedman: Joey began performing at her parent’s dinner table in Monsey\, NY. As a cancer survivor\, she has nothing to fear and delivers jokes with an unshakable frankness. She can be found regularly hosting and featuring at the DC Improv for acts such as Louis Katz\, Brad Williams\, Emily Catalano and Adam Ray. Most recently\, she featured in Ari Shaffir’s upcoming special. Every year\, she co-produces alongside Improbable Comedy and Cyrus Chansler\, a special fundraiser stand up show\, Sense of Tumor\, featuring all survivors\, thrivers and caregivers. \nPatty Mata: Patty is a DC based comic\, originally from Canada\, who has hosted at the Arlington Drafthouse for Adam Conover\, Dulce Sloan and Matt Friendly. DESCRIPTION:Registration opens on February 11! \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 9:00 AM inside the cemetery. Registration begins at 7:30 AM in the Chapel.\n \nCost: $35 for the race ($30 early bird pricing for all reservations prior to February 25!) \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \nThe Course: \nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards: \nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. \nDogs:  \nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race: \nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15th\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 19th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent-led tour\, this second entry in our 2025 Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Alexandria Wood\, followed by a complimentary docent-led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education.
