In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at an atmospheric National Historic Landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. SUMMARY:Lincoln Assassination Tour
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! This is your chance to experience our one of a kind Lincoln Assassination Tour if you missed the Cemetery Speaker Series earlier this year. \nOn April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \n \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nPlease join one of our expert docents for a tour of the graves and memorials associated with the assassination at Congressional Cemetery. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:Join the revelry during Autumn’s Equinox\nMarch with Batalá to celebrate the Equinox and kick off Congressional Cemetery’s series of Fall Events. \nSunday\, September 22\, 5:00pm* – 7:00pm \n*The drumming performance and march will begin at the cemetery’s front gate promptly @ 5:00 pm. \n \nBatalá\, Washington’s Afro-Brazilian all-female percussion band\, will lead spectators in a musical procession from HCC’s front gate to the tree-henge surrounding the Circle of Life. \n\nJoin the spirited walking parade with the rhythm of Samba-Reggae drums ( in the tradition of a New Orleans ‘Second Line’ procession)\nHear about exciting new cemetery initiatives and upcoming events\nCelebrate within the Circle of Life as the sun slips over the Western horizon\nEnjoy light refreshments in the Chapel following the event\n\nThe event is free to attend but we request that you RSVP HERE if you plan to attend. \nPlease feel free to read more from the Circle of Life designers below or click here to download the PDF! \n \nThe Circle of Life is an interpretive work of land art that celebrates nature’s perseverance. Rooted upon the cemetery’s hillside\, the distinctive ring of eight trees forms a living ‘tree-henge.’ Each young tree was precisely planted to align with a cardinal point of the compass sundial in the center. \nThe arboreal circle surrounds a labyrinthian path that meanders through a series of earthen artworks. An assemblage of benches invites passers-by to sit\, reflect\, and enjoy the surrounding landscape. \nThe earthwork design is defined by: \n\nSteppingstone paths between granite stoneworks engraved with scenes from nature;\na vantage point to observe the sun’s celestial path during solstices and equinoxes;\na 60-foot circle of linden trees aligned with the directional points of a compass rose;\na celebratory site to pay tribute to past and future stewards of the natural environment;\na peaceful space for meditating on garden benches in situ.\n\ncongressionalcemetery.org/Circle-of-Life \nThe Circle of Life is in the cemetery’s SE quadrant\, on the hillside above the family vaults as shown. \nENVIORNMENTAL LAND ART  \nLand art (also known as earth art) is an art form that connects people with their surroundings and is created using natural materials such as soil\, stones\, trees and vegetation. Inherently linked to the landscape\, earthen artworks are left in the open and change over time with seasons and weather. The Circle of Life design\, inspired by the Earthworks Art Movement\, was created with minimalist simplicity — blending the contours of the hillside with the hallowed ground of this National Historic Landmark. \nIn 2020\, Casey Trees planted eight linden tree saplings in a ‘tree-henge’ design to form a natural boundary for the Circle of Life. As the linden trees mature over 30 years to become 50’- 65’ in height\, each with branches extending 25’ wide\, their limbs will interlock to form a shade canopy. Each tree will cast its corresponding shadow across the compass centerpiece to mark the seasons of the year. \nSerpentine paths wander among granite engravings and scenes of nature. The trees\, stoneworks and open horizon invite visitors to pay homage to the environment by stopping\, listening\, walking\, and observing the surrounding flora and fauna. The slope overlooks a humming bee yard\, a row of venerable family tombs\, and a pet cemetery. In the distance beyond the tree line is the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. \n \nWinter solstice setting sun – December 22\, 2022 \nSOLSTICE AND EQUINOX VANTAGE POINTS \nNot unlike the rituals of Stonehenge\, visitors can celebrate the change of seasons by tracking the sun’s path across the aligned symmetry of the ‘tree-henge.’ The summer solstice begins its long day’s journey from the NE linden tree. The sun intensifies and then mellows as it finally casts a shadow across the NW tree 16 hours later. The winter solstice dims the light and shortens the SE to SW solar track across the Circle’s southern horizon in just over 10 hours. \nWelcome rays of sun spread dancing tree shadows across the arc of the Circle during the vernal (spring) and autumnal (fall) equinoxes. Twice a year\, day and night are of equal lengths as the sun rises above the east tree\, moves directly across the center of the compass rose\, and sets 12 hours later beyond the west tree. \nCOMPASS ROSE & NATURE ENGRAVINGS  \n \nAt the heart of the Circle is a terrestrial compass rose embedded with colorful points of stone that direct one’s gaze outward to the surrounding trees\, and inward to the monument’s core. Each tree is positioned to correspond to one of the eight directional points of the compass (North\, South\, East\, West\, NE\, NW\, SE\, SW). \nAt sea\, ancient Greek mariners used a ‘rose of the winds’ sextant to chart their course. Symbolically\, the four points or ‘winds’ of the compass represent: infinite possibility\, the present\, the past\, and the future. \nAlong the north to south axis of the Circle\, and surrounding the compass\, are eight engraved roundels that present a visual narrative of earth’s natural cycles. The  granite medallions portray the four seasons\, flora and fauna\, and sunrise and sunset. As simple contemporary depictions\, the rock carvings are somewhat akin to the petroglyphs left by indigenous peoples to teach\, warn\, or pass on significant messages to their descendants. \n \nHistorically\, Native Americans and ancient civilizations carved out comparable spaces in open landscapes to follow the sun’s movement and celebrate the seasons. Four centuries ago\, the Anacostan\, Nacotchtank\, and Piscataway tribes inhabited and roamed this area and left behind artifacts and hammered stones – later unearthed along the banks of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. Future generations may interpret this sacred space and the granite engravings found within the Circle as an appeal to environmental stewardship at a time when warming climate and pollution threatened our society. \n  \nCONSERVATION AND NATURAL BURIAL \nNatural or ‘green’ burials are designed to have minimal environmental impact and conserve earth’s resources. In keeping with its ecological focus\, Congressional is the only cemetery in Washington DC that offers this option for eco-friendly interment. The Circle of Life pays tribute to those who choose this simple and sustainable end to their existence. \nIn a typical green burial\, the body is not cremated\, prepared with chemicals\, or buried in a concrete vault. It is simply placed in a biodegradable container or shroud and interred in a gravesite to decompose fully and return to nature. The natural and organic disposition of one’s body can be a gift to the earth – one that connects our end to the beginning of life for other living organisms. Science tells us that energy and matter cannot be created or destroyed\, only converted from one form to another. Green burial eases the transformation of biomass and contributes to the complex ecosystem that continues the cycle of life. \nBACKGROUND & COLLABORATORS \nPlans for the Circle of Life began in 2019 when a group of friends\, interested in the history of Congressional Cemetery and in green burial\, collaborated with cemetery staff and Casey Trees to plant a grove of trees and create a sylvan sanctuary on the relatively barren SE hillside. \nIn partnership with Congressional Cemetery\, the Circle of Life was created and funded by Sharon Metcalf and Circle collaborators — Nancy Brennan\, Kay Tatum\, Mary Kay Blake and Margaret Tobey\, all of whom chose gravesites within the Circle for their final resting place. The words themselves seemingly resonate in our collective consciousness\, conjuring images of the silhouettes of misbegotten characters\, toting shovels\, sneaking into a cemetery on a dark night\, intent on their grisly work. While this cliche vignette might seem amusing\, is it true? Or does it obscure an equally macabre but far more true reality? What happens when someone’s remains are raised from the grave? How was it done in the past? Does it still happen today? And if so\, is it even legal? \nTo answer these questions and more\, we hope that you will join us for a very special October edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series to learn\, in a nutshell\, the ins and outs of disinterments\, exhumations\, and grave robbing. \nMark S. Zaid\, a Washington\, D.C. based attorney and legal expert\, will be providing an overview presentation of human exhumations and grave robbing\, drawing from his own experiences throughout his career. After his remarks\, one of our docents will lead attendees on a thematic walking tour of the cemetery grounds related to the cemetery’s history with all types of exhumations\, including the theft of an Attorney General’s skull\, moving a Vice President’s body\, the mass exhumation of Chinese migrants\, and more. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC has always been a place of diversity. Ever since the city’s founding in 1790\, thousands of different people have lived\, worked\, and died alongside each other. And while Washingtonians have not always lived harmoniously with each other\, they have contributed to create a community. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on October 6 at 1:00 PM. Docent Charles Walton will lead a thematic tour of Jewish American gravesites and monuments. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! . The tour is approximately 1 hour to 1 hour and a half in length. SUMMARY:Dead Man's Run 2024
DESCRIPTION:Start Time: The 5K begins at 5:30 pm. Registration and packet pickup opens at 4:00 PM. \nCost: $35 for the race \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nThe Course:\nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards:\nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest. \nShirts:\nWant to dress for the occasion with some Dead Man’s Run swag? You are in luck! You may purchase an official race shirt using the link here. \nDogs:\nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race:\nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRegistration:\nThere is no pre-race packet pickup. All bib pickup will occur prior to the race in our chapel. Bib pickup begins at 4:00 PM in the Chapel. \nCostume Contest:\nDressing for the occasion? In addition to prizes for the top finishers\, a panel of judges will award prizes to the top individual and team costumes. Entry into the contest is on race day only. Find our judges near the starting line\, fill out a small registration card\, and the judges will check out your costume. Be sure to arrive early to register to win! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race.

DESCRIPTION:It’s back! In partnership with Just Walk\, join us for a Halloween pet portrait in your pup’s favorite place! Options for portraits include either dog or family style. Plan to dress up in your favorite costume! We will have some costume options available for your pet as well as seasonally spooky backgrounds and decorations. \nPortraits will take place between the Chapel and the Sousa family plot. The cemetery will remain open to the public and dog walkers. \nJust Walk is a worker-owned business providing dog walking services in Washington D.C. We have been photographing our pet pals since 2011. You can check out our daily pictures on Instagram @justwalkdilps. \n————————————————– \nThe K9 Corps at Historic Congressional Cemetery is private dog-walking program\, bringing life\, community\, and volunteerism to this extraordinary burial ground. A portion of the sitting fee will benefit Historic Congressional Cemetery. \n————————————————– \nQ&A \nWhen will the event take place?\nThe pop up pet portrait will take place Sunday\, October 13\, 2024 starting at 11am. Tickets are sold in timed slots. The pop up studio will be outdoors. Photos will posted to the Just Walk Photos website 48 hours after the event. From there\, participants wilm be able to view and download their pictures. Slander\, libel\, and gossip have all shaped and skewed the historical record\, making it challenging to separate fact from fiction. Many of the people at the center of these scandals—or who became infamous themselves—lived\, worked\, and died in the nation’s capital. But who were these individuals? What are their stories? \nThis fall\, we invite you to uncover tales of scandal from the residents of Congressional Cemetery—a macabre glimpse into D.C.’s notorious past. Discover how their legacies endure in our collective memory. Encounter those shrouded in the past\, brought vividly to life by our talented actors\, and witness them as they tell their stories. Join us for Soul Strolls 2024: Scandal and Slander. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 18-19 and October 25-26. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 18\, Oct 25) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 19\, Oct 26). Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \nVIP Tours: \nWe offer exclusive VIP tours as a part of Soul Strolls! On Fridays\, the 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM are exclusively VIP.
