These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington D.C. remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington D.C.\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in D.C. With the global rise of antisemitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on Sunday\, May 18th at 1:00 PM. Seeking equal rights and protections from discrimination\, gay rights advocacy took on many forms of resistance\, including a symbol seen on graves at Congressional Cemetery\, the Pink Triangle. \nTo explore LGBTQ+ history and gay legacy in the nation’s capital\, we hope that you will join us for a very special WorldPride edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series with LGBTQ+ historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome. \nHe will explore the inspiring history of how generations of LGBTQ+ activists transformed the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge into a powerful call to action for LGBTQ+ pride\, justice\, and community. Drawing from unexplored archival sources and exclusive interviews\, Dr. Desai-Newsome will showcase the ways activists in the US and beyond used the pink triangle – and the history it represented – to fight against injustice in the present. Washington DC played a unique role in bringing together networks of activists and scholars in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. You’ll hear the stories and see the final resting place of some of the most influential advocates for LGBTQ+ equality in American history \n \nAfter the presentation\, Interim Executive Director A.J. Orlikoff will lead a thematic evening LGBTQ+ walking tour of the historic grounds. All proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. SUMMARY:Biodiversity Walk with Fireflies
DESCRIPTION:Join Biologist Edward M. Barrows and Congressional Cemetery Staff for a unique biodiversity walk through the cemetery!\nWith firefly flight being predicted to be in the beginning of June\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is an ideal place to see them amongst the trees and gravestones. Guided by Dr. Barrows\, we will be searching for\, spotting\, and identifying native species of fireflies as well as other insects of all sorts that call HCC home. \nFor those interested\, we will have a brief tutorial on the phone app ‘iNaturalist’\, and how it can be used to identify and document different species of animals (including insects)\, fungi\, and plants as well as documenting their sightings for the greater community. \nThis walk will take place June 6th starting at 7:00 PM\, with a rain date of June 14th!  \nCome prepared with clothing and shoes appropriate for an outdoor walk. Be warned that the ground off of paths is uneven\, and conditions will be dark\, please bring a flashlight if you have one. We will meet at the front gate of the Cemetery at 1801 E St SE.  \nFireflies are creatures of their own! We cannot guarantee firefly populations on June 6th.  \nRSVP HERE — LIMITED SPOTS (20)\nAbout Our Guide: Dr. Edward M. Barrows\n \nEdward M. Barrows (Edd) [Pictured right\, photoshopped into a 1950’s Jaguar with founder of the American Red Cross\, Clara Barton.] was born in the Motor City. He graduated from\nCenter Line High School in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. Then\, he attended\nthe University of Michigan as a Botany-Zoology co-major with some art and\nconservation training. He remained in the Midwest and attended the\nUniversity of Kansas where he performed research on native Bees and the\nnonnative Western Honey Bee and earned a Ph.D. in Entomology. From\n1975–2023\, he was an administrator\, researcher\, and professor at Georgetown\nUniversity. After he retired\, he took photography classes at Photoworks in\nGlen Echo Park\, Maryland. Edd is currently working on two e-books — The\nCongressional Cemetery Ecosystem and The Big Dipper Firefly. \n  \n
