In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:Please join Historic Congressional Cemetery and the Daughters of the American Revolution to dedicate a new sign for Belva Lockwood! \nBelva Lockwood is one of the most notable individuals interred at Congressional Cemetery. A lawyer\, activist\, and women’s rights pioneer\, she authored a sterling legal career\, blazing a trail for women in American society. The first woman to legally run for President\, as well as argue a case before the Supreme Court\, she stands as one of the most influential individuals of the 19th and 20th centuries. \nTo celebrate her legacy of achievement and activism for women\, we hope that you will join us on the morning of May 19th\, her death day\, for a short dedication ceremony to welcome new historic signage to her final resting place. There will be some brief remarks at the gravesite\, rain or shine! \nThank you to the Daughters of the American Revolution for the new historic signage to highlight Belva Lockwood’s achievements and life. \n

Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \n \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nIn honor of Jewish American Heritage Month\, we invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on May 19\, 2024\, 1:00 PM-2:30PM for a special event. Historic Congressional Cemetery is pleased to welcome Jonathan Edelman from the Lilian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum as a Speaker Series guest. Following his keynote remarks\, he will join with docent Charles Walton to lead a thematic tour of Jewish American gravesites and monuments. Come along as they walk the grounds and retell the stories of the Jewish Americans laid to rest here\, including Thomas Lantos\, Ruth Rappaport\, and Martin Sloane. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. That’s right\, we have the Tim Burton classic Beetlejuice on deck to kick off the Cinematery summer season. \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at an atmospheric National Historic Landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset (for this film\, gates will open at 7:30 and the film will begin between 8:30-8:45). Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. DESCRIPTION:“I believe that we must be the same activists in our deaths that we were in our lives.”\n – Leonard Matlovich 1987\nAlong with its other claims to fame\, why\, when\, and how did Congressional Cemetery become even\nmore historic for attracting a still-growing number of out LGBTQ+ residents; the largest known in the world\, and a distinction so exceptional that even mainstream media repeatedly wonder at it? \nJune’s guest speaker\, gay historian Michael Bedwell\, will describe its origins in legendary Paris cemetery Père Lachaise and detail the three reasons why his late friend\, former Air Force Technical Sergeant Leonard Matlovich\, the first service member to purposely out himself to fight the American military’s ban on gay men\, lesbians\, and bisexuals\, chose Congressional over Arlington. \nHis grave has been the focal point for several historic gay rights events\, the site of the legal wedding of two men\, and is the starting point for DC Front Runners’ annual Pride Run—though many of them were born after he died and have no idea who he was. Illustrated with personal photos along with audio and video clips\, Michael will also discuss the significance of Historic Congressional Cemetery as the location of not just Leonard’s internationally iconic stone but also the Veterans Administration cenotaph for Leonard’s mentor and the father of the modern gay rights movement Frank Kameny\, and the final resting place of three additional Movement pioneers: multi-achieving Barbara Gittings and her life partner Kay Tobin Lahusen and future resident Randy Wicker who led the first organized gay rights protest in the world in 1964. Behind the cover of TIME magazine\, beyond the front pages of newspapers from The New York Times to the Big Spring\, Texas Herald\, away from national network news screens\, and out of handcuffs in front of the White House\, what was the man like who inspired their all coming here? \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. We will be honoring her contribution with a planting ceremony in conjunction with the Lady Bird Johson’s Wildflower Center. \nFor more than 45 years Mr. Matthews and the Peterbug Academy has been an integral piece of the Capitol Hill community. His shoe repair academy has provided a much-needed service to his neighbors and an incomparable opportunity to make a difference in the lives of neighborhood children. Since 1977 he has been “saving soles and heeling people” while supporting the greenest form of all transportation – our feet! The amounts in parathesis next to the total denotes the amount that is a tax-deductible charitable contribution (see above) \nGeneral admission: $50 ($25 charitable contribution) \n \nIncludes: Admission to the event at anytime between 4:30 PM- 8:00 PM\, A “Bootlegger’s Adviser” History Hunt\, a period dance tutorial\, and entry to the costume contest \nVIP admission: $85 ($35 charitable contribution) \nIncludes: All General admission ticket benefits\, a VIP swag bag (including a premium whiskey glass)\, a complimentary drink ticket\, and exclusive access for a polaroid photo at the Public Vault (DeMent’s bootlegger stash). \nTable Upgrade: $250 ($150 charitable contribution) \nIncludes: All VIP and General Admission ticket holders may purchase a table for use during the event. All tables are tent covered\, includes 4 chairs\, and are located at a premium location near the dance floor and band. \nHistory Hunt: \nWilliam Frank DeMent was one of the many bootleggers who plied his elicit trade in the nation’s capital. Using this new revenue stream\, DeMent grew wealthier\, but ultimately his reach escaped his grasp as his trade led to his untimely end. At Gentleman’s Gambit\, DeMent is returning\, along with some other lost souls\, and they need your help to solve a mystery. \nWhat circumstances led to DeMent’s death? How did he die? Where? Who killed him? All of these questions and more will be answered when you solve the mystery at Gentleman’s Gambit…so long as you are up to the challenge. \n \nGentleman’s Gambit attendees will be tasked with solving an interactive history hunt where they will solve riddles to locate clues to unravel the mystery of DeMent’s death. Some clues may just be a simple gravestone. Others\, are a bit more lively\, as the lost spirits of those buried here wander the grounds. Perhaps\, if asked the right questions\, they will be kind enough to help you solve the mystery to win a prize? \nAll attendees at Gentleman’s Gambit will receive a Bootlegger’s Adviser History Hunt and instructions on how to participate upon arrival. The History Hunt may be completed at any time throughout the event and your prize may be redeemed at DeMent’s Speakeasy once you have solved the mystery. \nRain and Weather Policy:  \nThis an outside event that will be held rain or shine. Guests should keep an eye on the forecast and prepare for the elements accordingly. A message will be sent to all ticketed attendees prior to the event with a weather advisory. \nIn the event that severe weather makes the event too dangerous to proceed\, the event will be canceled. In this case\, tickets will be refunded with the exception of the charitable contribution portion\, which will be retained to cover event costs. Thank you for your understanding. \nLive Music and Dance Demonstrations: \nWe love period music and dance and we hope you do too! We are excited to share that the Foggy Bottom Whomp Stompers will be playing multiple sets during the event. An area of the event will be opened up to act as a dance floor to truly transport you bac to the Roaring 20s. \nIn addition\, dance instructors will offer two period dancing demonstrations from Gotta Swing that will invite audience participants to learn how to dance like the country has just gone dry! \nCostume Contest: \nWere you born in the wrong time? Do you have a period costume you are proud of that you need an occasion to show it off? Perhaps you regularly dress like you lived during the Prohibition Era and you want to win a prize for it? \nWell\, at Gentleman’s Gambit\, we have you covered! We encourage you to dress up for this event and all attendees are welcome to register for the costume contest. Registration is free and is done entirely on site at the event. All you need to do to be entered is to fill out a small form and present yourself to the judges. DESCRIPTION:The United States was consumed by the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Millions of individuals were swept up in the chaos of the conflict as the war raged for over four years. We are so excited to bring the Bruce Willis led spooky thriller The Sixth Sense to Cinematery! \nCinematery is our annual outdoor summer film screenings. Held on the cemetery grounds\, this one-of-a-kind event allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the cemetery after dark while taking in a classic film with friends and family. So pack your chairs or picnic blanket and whatever tasty treats you enjoy and plan to join us for an exclusive picnic at an atmospheric National Historic Landmark. Join us for an evening under the stars! \nFeel free to bring your own beverages and food. Alcohol is permitted and will also be for sale. Keep in mind that all guests will be ID checked upon entry. We also recommend bringing your own blankets\, low lying lawn chairs\, etc. Please do NOT bring chairs that may obstruct the view of those behind you. \nGates open about an hour before sunset and the movie begins at sunset (for this film\, gates open at 7:30 and the film will begin between 8:45-9:00) Times are adjusted for earlier sundown times. \nReservations are required.
