DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Dia De Los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \n“I have been in DC for 14 years and a resident of the Capitol Hill area. I was born and raised in the southwest\, AZ and TX. I come from a Mexican-American family that has been in the southwestern part of the country for generations. \nDay of the dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy. \nIt’s a great pleasure to celebrate this year in such a historic and treasured location.  Excited to come together with our neighbors to share this special occasion.” \nDia de Los Muertos is a celebration that honors ancestors and connects the living with the dead. For our celebration\, we welcome the public to join us in the spirit of the holiday by bringing your memories to add to a community ofrenda at the cemetery. Bring photos of people you have loved and have lost to death as well as mementoes representing them: the foods and symbols of the things they loved and memories you shared. We will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Dia De Los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and mourning. \nOn November 2 at 11am\, guests are invited to join us at the historic chapel in the center of the cemetery where an enormous community ofrenda will honor the ancestors. The public is welcomed to bring photos of loved ones to add to the community ofrenda\, as well as foods to share that your person or people enjoyed. Join us to decorate sugar skulls\, make paper flowers\, and learn about the holiday. No experience necessary. \nIn addition\, the cemetery is collaborating with Crayola Flowers for a special way to celebrate the holiday\, beautify our grounds\, and honor those buried at our historic cemetery. Participants can purchase flowers to bring to the graves of loved ones and any graves with special meaning to you. The cemetery will also have flowers available for our Dia De Los Muertos participants to decorate graves of your choice throughout the cemetery. \nAt the end of the celebration we will gather outside in a procession around the chapel and out to open the gate to bid the ancestors farewell\, inviting them to return again next year. \nAre you joining us? DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\, who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $10 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:Prior to the creation of Arlington National Cemetery\, Congressional Cemetery was the preeminent cemetery of national memory. And many veterans of America’s earliest wars chose Congressional Cemetery as their final resting place. This tradition continued throughout United States history and now thousands of veteran graves dot the landscape of our historic grounds. Join one of our expert docents for a military history focused tour of the cemetery in honor of the upcoming Veteran’s Day holiday. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe tour is rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. Please come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Congressional Cemetery for an afternoon of poetry with Fred Zirm and his book “Rescue Dogs”. “Rescue Dogs” explores the multitude of lessons Zirm learned throughout his life from the dogs he rescued\, taking us on a journey through life\, love\, friendship\, aging\, death\, and resilience with his dogs Carabelle\, Dory\, Larry\, Woofer\, Trey\, and Snuffles. Ultimately\, Zirm asks us to ponder the question: Who rescued whom? \nSunday\, November 10th\, at 1 PM\, we will join in Congressional Cemetery’s chapel to engage in poetry about some of our most loved family members\, our pets. \nBeginning with a Meet and Greet\, snacks provided\, there will be readings\, Q&A\, and an open mic opportunity to share works about our pets. \nIf you are comfortable\, please bring your own writings and thoughts about your pets– poetry encouraged!\nReserve your Spot for this Event HERE!\nMeet Fred Zirn\nAfter earning a B.A. and M. A. in English from Michigan State and an M.F.A. from the Playwrights Workshop at the University of Iowa\, Fred Zirm was an English and drama teacher at Landon\, an independent boy’s school in Bethesda\, for nearly 40 years. Since his retirement in 2014\, he has continued to direct plays at local community theaters. His most recent productions include As You Like It with the British Players in Kensington\, MD; Sondheim’s Assassins at Silver Spring Stage\, and a youth production of Seussical Jr. the Musical at the Arts Barn in Gaithersburg. \nDuring his retirement\, Fred has also focused more on his writing. His poems\, as well as some flash fiction and creative non-fiction\, have appeared in over a dozen magazines and anthologies\, and he has been a Pushcart Prize nominee. In 2021\, he published his first book of poetry\, Object Lessons. His second book\, Rescue Dogs\, is rooted in what he has learned about and from the six very different dogs his family has adopted. \nFred lives in Rockville with his wife\, Robin\, and daughter\, Sara\, and enjoys cycling\, kayaking\, and spending summers in Chautauqua\, NY.

These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. Every other Saturday\, barring major event programming\, we will have M&M Writing Group meet in the gatehouse at 10 AM for two hours of support\, accountability\, and dedictated time to hone your writing craft. DESCRIPTION:Join us from 6-7:30pm at our favorite neighborhood pub for Death Over Drafts! \nWHERE?  \nDuffy’s Irish Pub 1901 C St SE\, Washington\, DC 20003 \nWHY? \nThis is a free and informal gathering for the community that will be held monthly on the FINAL (get it?) Tuesday of the month. Come once or come monthly: no experience or expectations necessary! The event is co-hosted by a “death doula” and a “death midwife” who love getting people to talk about this sometimes-taboo topic. \nThe founder of the Death Over Drafts movement\, Stefanie Elkins\, describes the goal as this: “Death over Drafts is a casual and fun community event to spark connection and is part of a growing movement to destigmatize important conversations on end-of-life.”  \nWhat to expect: \n\nThe event is free!\nAll are welcome!\nYou can still come if you don’t love beer\, there are other snacks and drinks! ;)\nThis is a super supportive community\, but we are not a support group.\nIn this communal environment\, we remind you to be responsible for your own engagement.\n\nAt Death Over Drafts\, the public can enjoy a fun conversation where death is not avoided. There’s no lecture\, but questions will be answered. You never know who you will sit next to\, very interesting fellow guests will be in our midst.
